So you're telling me that when you store 2 16-bit FP operations into 1 32-bit operation you're not doing 2 16-bit operations per clock?

As has been pointed out by another, that's not what the patent was about. Packing more values into a vector register by using lower precision representations isn't groundbreaking. It's codified in numerous industry standards and has been common practice for a very long time. Support for specific formats varies from micro architecture to micro architecture for economic and schedule reasons.

No, the patent covered a more subtle idea due to the nature of interpolation for vertex shader results passed to fragment shaders. Not that anyone versed in technology would need to know that to see how out of your depth you are: nobody with more than a passing familiarity with programming would write the phrase you did above. The 16- and 32-bit stored values in question are operands, not operations.

Perhaps we'll agree to disagree.

I see it a bit like force-feedback wheel support: the proportion of people impacted by omitting the feature would be minute, but devs put in the effort to support it anyway.

Neo support probably won't be a financial life-or-death decision for devs, but deciding to omit it is significant.

I hear you both and you both have valid points but I'm more in agreement with The God here.

I agree with you that the inclusion or absence of a Neo improvement can affect buying habits of certain consumers in situations where 2 or more games are very similar.

Where I agree more with The God is that there are very few games that are very similar these days.

Take FPS' for instance. Some may think that Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Titanfall are quite similar. If they all had a Neo mode and say Call of Duty's Neo mode wasn't quite as fleshed out as Battlefield or Titanfall, you're suggesting that there's a large population of people that could potentially forgo the following just because they perceive that the developers of Call of Duty didn't try hard enough:
-Where their friends are playing
-The quality of the gameplay itself
-Price (which in this example may be the same but in other examples could be different)

To ignore these other factors just because someone may feel slighted that the Neo mode of a game they are interested in isn't as good as a competitor's is a stretch.

Certainly there will be some people who fall into this category. However, I do not believe any game will ever draw a large enough group of this type of consumer to make a notable impact on sales.

I used the Fall FPS market as an example because outside of driving games, it's one of the genres that produces the most similar games. The ideal example would have been sports games but because the vast majority of leagues around the world only produce one annual game, there is no competition there. Every other genre has increasingly less similar games.

Tekken, Soul Caliber, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and King of Fighters are all fighting games but vastly different from one another. The likelihood of a large group of people who would've purchased one of these games but didn't because they didn't think the Neo mode went far enough is exceedingly small.

I could go on with other examples like first-party games, open world games, RPGs, almost anything from Japan, etc., but I hope the point is clear.

Yes, you're right that some people may fall into this category. However, I disagree on the amount of these people being anything significant.

Is it crazy to believe that they will show off a epic GoW boss fight. That way it shows the power of the neo amd it calms the nerves of GOW fans that are worried about their being no epic set peices.

I'm going into this with my expectations in check just as I did with NMS. I will be more than happy with the Neo, and I can confirm it WILL have multiplayer.

Someone over at the EU PS community claims they saw a genuine box for FFXV with a PS Neo Enabled label. No pics to prove it. Will believe it when I see it.

Predictions

- Modest spec bump to get closer to competion
- affordable prices @ $249 $ $449 without bundles
- PSVR a big focus
- Renamed to something more mainstream
- A few titles showcased mostly from in house devs
- One big reveal from 3rd or first party
- Devs talking about what they can do with with the system
- PR repeating how systems complement each other
- Sales update

This but with the price being $249 for PS4 Slim, $399 for Neo (that shall be named PS4K), 3rd party being Red Dead 3.

I'm still unsure if I want to hold out for the PS5 or upgrade, so hopefully the conference will solidify my decision. This is assuming the PS5 would play PS4 games at Neo settings or better. I just don't know if it's worth the extra money or if it's better used on buying games for my perfectly good OG PS4.

Pretty sure Neo's big triumph will be with multiplatform and open world games TBH. Games that are notorious for having big jumps on PC or subpar performance on consoles. We'll see some cool stuff from God of War I supposed but that's not the kind of game we ever had much trouble with image quality, frames, animation, etc, so I don't expect it to be game changing so much as polished.

Yep. All of the above, except the pricing. 249 and 399 is what I'm guessing.

If it's $399 and offers some benefits at 1080p I am there Day 1. Otherwise I will wait. Nevertheless very excited about tomorrow.

This?

Source. For me it's clearly a fake

Yep. Same box, same source. Oddly sharp for a pic someone took and popped into their photobucket. We'll see what happens with it soon. We have called something fake recently which turned out to be real. I'm on #teamfake as well.

I wonder how they are going to start the show. Do they go straight into a game reveal / gameplay footage of a Neo version of a game? Do we get someone on stage talking first?

You said it way better than I could.

I think they should roll with the "Neo" sub-brand.

Branding it as "PS4K" won't make much sense when "PS5K" comes round. PS5 Neo does make sense. In the same way Apple have their "S" branding, Sony could roll with "Neo".

They will either go with PS4 Plus (like PS+) or PS4 Ultra (like how they label their high end phones)

Anything else just sounds silly.

You actually think NEO won't do anything for people without 4K TV's?

Why the heck would downsampling or the fps performance or the potential graphical or other IQ enhancements not count just because of what TV you have?

I don't think we should be speculating on spec bumps and competing with Scorpio, a machine that by all intents and purposes doesn't even exist yet. Scorpio comes out next year. If Sony tries to spec bump now in regards to GPU, MS will just further spec boost to compensate for the difference. You can't help a 12 month difference in technology

That's a good point, yet if they could then why not and force MS hand a little more with the scorpios spec etc.
On another matter... What if the neo improved element of a game is a bump to titles resolution though I run the neo on a 1080p telly. Will I just get a essentially vanilla look to the game ( therefore making the titles neo 'improvement' moot or will it super sample?
