That's because it's the exact same dock they've always had.

unless you want to use the lightning earbuds

no facts here please
yeah, this is just the dock they've been selling for ... ever since ... well, the iPod!

Lmao at the mouse one, if the person who designed the charging port to be on the bottom on the mouse is still working at apple that is straight up embarrassing

well, that's apple for you. they're so super focussed on component cost, they just changed the bottom plate of the magic mouse.
They didn't put it there because they thought it's the best idea, but simply because that meant they could be using the same, unchanged mighty mouse top shells they've been making for years now, just replacing the bottom one to accomodate a lightning port.

So you're telling me they've solved a problem they've created themselves? Brilliant

And here I am charging and using headphones on my phone without extra devices needed like some kind of idiot...

I've been trending the opposite way, even in the face of some stupid moves like this. I'm curious why this week was the decisive one?

because people don't like having standard headphones taken away for no reason?

I'm the same, my next phone will definitely not be an iPhone now.

It honestly is amazing that Apple is taking the one kind of cable/port that is truly universal and standardized across every single device, and deliberately trying to destroy it with proprietary bullshit. Honestly, fuck them for that. Fuck them for doing the one thing that is literally the exact opposite of what helps consumers (universal standards). They are genuine, grade-A douchebags.

Eh, bluetooth is standardized. They just wanted to the extra internal space to expand their haptic engine shit.

Dumb design decision but nothing nefarious.

This thread goes to show there is nothing that will quell the butthurt.

People will be dragged kicking and screaming into the future.

You seriously believe this? lol

Apple to me is a religion and not being able to use an industry standard headphone jack is the shit

what future? most see no benefit or need for this

Most who freaked out at "bend gate" but who are chill with the 6 page long tread about exploding Note 7s?

Yeah, I don't care about outrage when the overall trend is toward affordable blutooth earphones.

This post goes to show that people will defend anything their company of preference does and will attempt to justify it using any means necessary.

Pretty sure having a bud or whatever in one ear is fine in most of the civilized world.

I do this, so I can answer an incoming call on the road. I also have my Lightning port charging/transmitting FM (stereo has no BT or Aux). I won't be able to do this anymore, but I also don't get a lot of phone calls in general so I'm not upset.

ok, go out and buy a bluetooth headset then, it doesn't mean I shouldn't be able to buy a standard pair of wired headphones without the need for a stupid adapter

i don't know Apple just loves their own kool-aid or if the move is genuinely nefarious, either way it's a dumb move that doesn't benefit the consumer, and isn't analagous to the floppy and CD drive removals before anyone bothers to bring that up

Yeah, this is no surprise they've made a dock upgrade. I had one of those original docks for my ipod. This is basically the same exact thing.

The exact dock in the OP has been around for at least a year, perhaps two. The only changes they've made is a new color to match the matte black phone.

If the iPhone had a USB-C port instead of Lightning, you might have a point.

Apple is gonna make a truck ton of money from wireless headphones, Lighting cable royalties from 3rd party headphones, and adapters.

This exact dock has been in Apple stores all year. It has nothing to do with 7 specifically. It was released and promoted for iPhone 6 (S). And every device since the old iPods have had these same functioning docks. Phil simply gave an answer using an existing product a lot of people have.

If only the analog headphone jack could be used to supply audio to a car's aux input...

if you were courageous enough, you'd buy a bluetooth adapter that plugs into you cars aux port, connect your iphone via bluetooth, and use the lightning to charge your phone

Wireless charging would have solved this fiasco, and they couldn't even deliver on that. Maybe by the iPhone 9.

This. I was expecting wireless charging, but maybe I'm too used to Android. I'm surprised it's still not in iPhones.

Are these all real or photoshops?

All real. That hub isn't first party, but if you wanna backtrack, Apple only put a USB C on that Macbook also for space. So nothing can plug in natively.
