Game Informer: The origins of Horizon: Zero Dawn (NeoGAF shoutout)

It's insane to me that no one thought of Robot Dinosaurs before. It's so obvious, I mean half of us probably drew them on notebooks in 3rd grade
Hasn't anyone here heard of ZOIDS? It's an anime and game about robot dinosaurs/animas

"Almost nobody looks like a supermodel, so why should she look like a supermodel."

Spontaneously applauded at that sentence. She looks great and that game looks like a GOTY contender to me.

Also, this is for GGs word cloud: Amazing, awesome, fantastic, surreal...

That was a great video. I really enjoyed it. Honestly, my only real reservations as of right now are story/writing quality and quest quality. We'll see!

So March 2010 is when production began.

Anyone else finding it pretty unnerving that we're at 6 year development cycles now...

I'd be more than fine with it as long as the end product looks as cool as Horizon.
Also, as others have said it's really unlikely even half of that time was spent in pure development mode, a lot of it is probably taken by planning and building the engine.

GG stop teasing the canyon and show us a long exploration footage of it already :/

Spottet a new robodino.

Like GIANKRATOS said, it's [robably those small crab robots without the container.

Agree 100%. They totally nailed her.

lol they read every thread on gaf and put all the suggestions into word processors and excel spreadsheets.

Good. I dont always agree with gaffers but more often than not we are on point. Uncharted 4's latest backlash proves that. Hopefully GG has read the criticisms on Killzone shadowfall and learned from it.

GG, if you are reading this. Release KZ2 mp remaster nao!

Great video/interview and how you can not fall in love with the premise. I hope this will be the beginning of the Horizon franchise. I am excited for next year and want to wander through that wonderful world and will try to not use the analysis tool for machines. What a experience it hopefully is to discover which tactic, weak points and weapons to use. :)

no thats when they started asking for pitches. thats not production. production only started after they had developed two different prototypes and ran it by the Sony guys who were 50-50.

Even after a year or so of making these prototypes and finally choosing this project, they had only 10 people working on it until November 2013. So technically this game has been in full production for the past three years.

Good share.

I'm happy that Guerrilla is finally getting to do something different! Not that I hate Killzone (though I'm not personally an FPS player,) but this Guerrilla/Lost Boys crew had tons of different pots on the stove when it was starting up and still did experiment a bit at first (besides ShellShock, Killzone PSP was the notable departure that actually shipped, and I loved that game) before they committed 100% to their bread-and-butter. Horizon calls on so much of their tech and production asset design talent but for something much more my style of play and look, and I'm fully on-board for it.

That shot of the sandstorm effect in the desert valley area was pretty damn impressive looking.

Whoever green-lit this project, THANK YOU.
I look forward to Horizon: Zero Dawn more than I've looked forward to all the Killzone games combined! The concept and the concept arts are fuck-awesome and I'm super glad they're making this dream project. It looks special and hopefully it turns out special as well. Day 1 for that Pro version.

The super model shaming has to STOP.

The music from that reveal trailer is still absolutely stunning. I've always seen Guerrilla's brilliance, outside of that pesky Shadow Fall so i'm excited for them.

I agree with the statement... but she's pretty damn close to looking like a supermodel. :P

They knew KZ was coming to a close so they started a small team to prototype new ideas ahead of time. This happens all the time in game development at major studios. If the team is kept very, very small and stays mobile in the pre-conception phase, there's nothing to worry about. Once you know what you're making then you ramp up and start hiring if you need to, that's when the burn costs start to become a budgeting issue over time if the main production phase lasts 4-5+ years. It was also mentioned in the video that there were considerable R&D costs in building up an engine for OW games and getting content creation tools to the point where designers could (theoretically) hammer out quests in half a day.

What UC4 backlash has there been? The game was/is damn near perfect.

Also, I feel pretty glad they've gone for Gaf word clouds, from what I've seen from the Horizon threads it hasn't rubbed people the wrong way like most exclusive games do. You have the odd shit-posted that you recognise from almost every Sony thread but the reactions have been largely positive. This game to me always looks like this crazy concept art for a cancelled game that you wince at never being made.

I would like a chibi artstyle like Federation Force.

Put that in your word cloud!

Hope it works out, the game looks really cool so far. I spotted a Pikachu btw!

I just hope that the story doesn't suck. Still my only fear, not really encouraged by them saying that they came up with the story only after the gameplay and concepts have been completely finalized, but I remain hopeful.
