Forza Horizon 3: Review Thread

Really liked the demo for Horizon 2 but never did pick it up for whatever reason. It's tempting to jump right to this third game but consistently hearing great things about the first two Horizon releases I want to give those games the time of day first.

Amazing scores though; great job to the devs.

The ib times review is interesting. While I think they are being incredibly hyperbolic, there seems to be a similar criticism for horizon 3 as I had for horizon 2.

It felt more like like a Gumball3000 simulator than a racing game.

I'm sure for 95% of people this will not be a problem, but as I've said before in forza threads, there is a distinct lack of satisfaction when you win a race. It's almost as if the racing is just part of the story, and the objective is actually to enjoy the festival.

I'm still going to get horizon 3 and accept it for what it is, but I'm glad I'm not the only person to notice this.
In Horizon 2 the real meat was hidden away in the Bucket Lists. Some of them are legitimately difficult, and they are usually a blast to do in Co-op.

I was 100% sure I was getting this game. Don't know why I haven't preordered yet, but I sure as hell am now. My favorite racing game franchise of all time. Get hype!

Just curious. If a game has absolutely no Cons. Nothing negative about it whatsoever, how can it not be a 10. Genuinely curious. A game with no negatives by definition has no flaws, therefore is flawless.

Nonetheless, it looks like an amazing game and I think I'm sold.

I don't know if there will be something that makes it a con yet since I'm only about 15 hours in, for in progress reviews I tend to be a little bit conservative, but if it keeps the same stride till the end, then yeah I can see myself giving it a 10.

Turn10 are going to have to step up their game. Horizon is quickly becoming the best game of the franchise. Here's to an amazing FM7 too!

Congratulations Playground <3

It's like the current Bethesda & Obsidian Entertainment situation. Bethesda develops the mainline Fallout games, Obsidian Entertainment makes the better games.

And what happens when some of the guys get sick of creating FH games (if they aren't already)? Can't buy talent.

Probably the same as the folks who get bored making Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Gran Turismo, MLB, God of War, or annual sports games. They move on. /shrugs

Gotcha. Thanks for the response.

That 4/10 from the other reviewer though. Cripes.

Will this push over to 90+ meta? MS hasn't had that so far for a major release this gen. Playground are talented guys, I'm more interested in what their other IP they are said to be working on actually is. If it's PGR I would be very happy.

This is going to hang at 89 MC, which is sad. People that don't like racing games shouldn't review them.

Pumped anyway, preordered Play Anywhere deluxe weeks ago.

I think at this point we can say that Forza horizon has been Microsoft's best exclusive series this generation. Wonder if they will do another Fast and furious promo

quick question: is this forza horizon more offroad, taking a different approach? is it different than horizon 2? I have not played horizon 2 yet (I loved the first one though).

Very pleased with the reviews I tend to drop Forza games after I've done the main branch of races so I'll pick it up when I see it on sale in the new year.

That was my point. Money can be better spent contracting IPs to developers...instead of buying a company name.

Jesus, it's getting great reviews.

Just watched the IGN review... I Love what they're doing with custom soundtracks from Groove music. I want more games to do this and I'll sign up for Groove music.

Basically, if you have your groove music playing, then it integrates with the game as if it's coming from in-game audio, and so as you drive into festival locations, the sound shifts to sound like it's coming from the festival speakers and other things like that.

I wish GTA V had a feature like that, where one of the stations was your Groove music station. I'd immediately sign up to groove if it had it... And I say this having already subscribed to Google Music.

It's not like 90 or 91 would make the game better or worse but i agree, they shouldn't.

i love how weird these threads get when there's one bad score.

Bad scores don't bother me, but the review was really wierd...

It seemed like his main gripe was that the game quickly give you lots of money and cars to drive...
It's a baffling complaint for a game made for car lovers.

Edit: I kinda regret clicking the link. The game doesn't pose a challenge? It's as difficult as you want it to be. I'm sure he wasn't playing with all assists off or with rewind off. I'm not sure how you can say a game is bad BECAUSE it gives the player freedom to play however they find enjoyment.

Just groove? Not the background music app too?

90 on both metacritic and opencritic, definitely deserved it from what I've played. Congrats Microsoft for your first 90 game on this gen ; )

Now hope it'll be the same for Gears 4.

The IB Times review has to be trolling, there's no justifications in the text for such a low score. It's basically No Fun Allowed - The Review.

Looking at the second lowest review (We Got This Covered 7/10), they at least explain what they didn't like, some of it relating to technical issues.

What hurt more than the constant sense of déjà vu, was that I was constantly running into technical issues. I expected some pop-in from Forza Horizon 3, as I was driving at crazy fast speeds and Horizon 2 had issues with it, but it’s so much worse here. I was constantly seeing details in the environment appear as I got close to them, and it got distracting at a point. Horizon 3‘s art is top-notch, but its performance isn’t. I also ran into some crazy issues with the shadowing system where the game’s shadows would constantly jump all over the screen despite my car not moving, and a few instances where the frame rate took a dip. I can’t speak to how the game runs on PC, but it certainly felt like I was playing a sub-par console port of a really pretty game — which is probably not the sort of thing Microsoft really wants to go for with its “Play Anywhere” campaign out in full force.

However, they seem to be the only ones talking about such issues.

Certainly is his opinion, but he is judging the game on things that aren't there by design, the fact that it has little 'focus' or let's you do whatever is a big part of the game.

The fact that he basically highlights that it isn't Dirt Rally is a big alarm bell, simply because the two games, despite both being racing games, are very, very different, one is a tight simulation with strict progression, the other is an open world, do what you want game with freeform progression.

I'm not disagreeing with what you're saying at all and not saying it's a particularly well written review. Just seemed some people couldn't understand his personal problems with the game so I was just pointing out what they seemed to be to me, from reading his review.
