Forza Horizon 3: Review Thread

Since I need the Xbox One version in order to play with people, and the digital Xbox One version isn't significantly more expensive than the disc version, I will try this UWP thing once.

Never mind, it's 25% cheaper from the UK because the pound went to shit.
And so I evade your dubious grasp once more, UWP.

I purchased the standard digital edition and even pre-loaded it onto my console, but now I'm wishing I had simply splurged on the ultimate edition.

Is there any way to spend another $40 and upgrade to the ultimate edition? I apologize if this has already been asked.

Well, I said I wasn't going to read any FH3 reviews, because I just don't care. PG already has my money. But I had to read the IBTimes UK article due to all the fuss...

...made by a studio seemingly – understandably – bored with cars...

This is the worst part. WTF?

Is just about anyone allowed into Metacritic to drag averages down as they please?
They need a better screening process.

Holy shit it's at 91 now!!!

Haha man oh man, these review threads never, ever change.

Game people in the thread are looking forward to gets one bad review and the thread absolutely derails as people start jumping through every hoop they can find to discredit the reviewer. It's amazing how the same thing always happens. People really, really lack self-awareness.

Playground games didn't fuck that reviewers girlfriend, they didn't run over his dog, he just didn't like the game and that's totally ok. It's his opinion, and it's valid.

As are people's opinions of his review? I don't get why people think it's fine to critique something, but then seem shocked when people want to critique the critique.

Also not everything written in his review IS a valid opinion. And those things should be called out.

What if some points are not valid or explained? Critiques are worth calling out if they're not backed up.

The comment section of that ibtimes review is really taking it to whoever wrote that review!!! Them comments LMAO!!!!!!!

It's a pretty poor review, I think that's what people are getting at.

NMS 9
Knack 8
FH3 2

I see a pattern here.....hmmm..ok, maybe not..we need more scores, but I'm thinking we'll see a good lean with more of them.

I'm curious, did they even get a review build? Is there a way to find out? Would be funny if they didn't even have one..I'm not clicking the link to see if they have their own videos and screenshots.

oh man, just makes this even more entertaining...

some people are just kind of contrary, seems that website is staffed by many [read: all?] such types of people.

can't wait to try this out on mah pee-cee, will be my first full horizon experience.

Something being an opinion isn't the same as it being fundementally valid. There's a lot to criticize in that review, and review threads are basically designed for those conversations.

That IBTimes score, like it or not, is why X out of 5 scores should not be lumped into a system such as Metacritic. 2 out of 5 stars says something very particular on that type of scale, but it ends up equating to 40% out of 100 when converted into the aggregate. Conversely, I would imagine 5/5 being given in situations where 9/10 was really where the reviewer wanted to grade something but didn't have the want and/or choice to use half increments. All in all, it's just not good practice.

I see this thread has turned into a pitchfork and torch party for a reviewer that some people disagree with.

FH3 currently has an average score of 91 on Metacritic. That's a great score, but if helps you to think of that average as a few points higher, then by all means, please do.

It's a pretty poor review however, I think that's what people are getting at.

Yeah, it's not that negative reviews are inherently a problem. It's when negative reviews are extremely poorly argued you get issues.

Like turning backwards a couple years, I don't mind that Tom Chick didn't like Forza Horizon 2. But his review has some blatant misinformation in it, which makes it seem like he didn't even give the game a fair look. (For example: "Plowing through street signs and parked scooters (this is Europe, see?) doesn’t slow you down." Just look at the speedometer, Chick, because it absolutely does slow you down.)

In general with bad Forza reviews it does feel like negative critics sometimes don't give the game a fair chance, especially in terms of how the series lets you tailor the difficulty and assist level to such a tremendous degree. I probably wouldn't love the games either if I used default driving settings, but they've always given us enormous control to customize the experience for ourselves. You just need to actually do that. I find it very hard to believe the International Business Times reviewer still found the game too lacking in challenge if he raised the difficulty settings appropriately. Big complex mechanics-heavy games can't be one-size-fits-all out of the box.

But reviews here are great on the whole, there's nothing to get upset about and I'm not sure if anybody here really is.

I mean, if it was a decently written review, I doubt most people here would be complaining. The review itself is kinda shit.

Yeah, this, exactly. It happens in nearly every review thread. It's one of the reasons they make for such an entertaining read.

Yeah it makes no sense when a 2/5 would convert to a range of 40 to 59 but what can you do

IBTimes have been exposed as a joke site.

They gave No Mans Sky a good score. :)

Nope, actually this has been pretty much a party thread and a good job Playground Games threads. With some people putting their 2 cents on a lame review. Majority has been a fun thread for a great game.

No, not exactly.

Having an opinion is fine and dandy, but that does not make it immune to criticism, which this review is receiving directly due to it being poorly written.

Also, where else do we discuss reviews if not the review thread? Cause people focusing on an outlier is nothing new, so I'm curious to your overall point?

I never really liked racing games, think this could pull me in? These scores have me intrigued..
Play the demo. It'll give you a very strong idea of what the full game has in store. For me, I've only ever really dug my teeth into: Wipeout, Burnout and Forza Horizon. Horizon is my fave of the bunch and the last one was probably my favourite game of the generation (thus far).

From what Im hearing FH3 upscaled to 4K with HDR on Xbox One S looks as if its running native 4K. Im hearing it looks jaw dropping amazing!! can't wait till others here to confirm it.

THIS. So this. Very accurate description.

Unless you're calling out particular shoddy complaints, it sounds like it bugs you that people are discussing a review in a review thread. Do you think the review had some useful outlook that people are overlooking? Using a bizarre characterization of the devs (and the assertion that cars are boring) as the premise, and making a comparison to a game in what's effectively a different genre aren't a strong foundation.

Due to how the game works and all the various locations each had some issue and each had places they stood out.
LG looked the best for sure. But neither other TV was a slouch. KS8000's edge lighting got in the way whenever they had any kind of letterboxing which is very often and you can see pillaring here and there. But I don't think most folks will be bothered by that. Nighttime races were a tossup.

One thing about HDR. People are straight up going to have to get accustomed to fiddling for a great deal of time for each game and each tv.

I was passing the game from one xbox to the HDR HDMI input of one tv and then the S to the other HDMI input and switching between the same local area(took some friggen time let me tell you) and as I stated in my primer videos. If you never see the HDR your fine. IF you do...its like night and friggen day.HDMI

Self quote because I think my question may have gotten buried. Thread's moving fast! Thanks again :)

Interested as well. How did input lag on the B6 compare between gaming in SDR and in HDR?

I'm really tempted to get this game. I really like Forza 6 but I also have so many games to play....

Hmmmmmm.

Maybe I'll get it as a gift to myself for Christmas.

Like I've already stated, I don't care about the score the review in question churned out, its the actual content of the review I take umbridge with. He basically calls out Playground as being bored of making racing games and that they have their minds on something else because they don't care about the game they are making.

Do you think that doesn't warrant discussion and that we should just chalk it off as a differing opinion, even when he has written something that is subjective that can be countered with facts?

What's the point of a review thread then?

I want to buy it but how am I supposed to give MS my money when I dont even know how it runs on PC. Do I need to upgrade my GPU or other questions.

I mean even if the demo is Xbox only for now at least let some PC media play the PC version.

Download Forza Apex and see how it runs, if it can run that well it will also run this well

I expect you'll have a very detailed PC specification thread to read through very soon.
