Gears of War 4 coming free with Nvidia 1070 & 1080s through Oct 30

Everything else they had that auto redeemed still had it's own key that was separate from the promotion one. So I don't think it's a 1:1 match.

Psuedo code if they wanted 1:1

redeem(id, nv_code)
{
string mscode = nv.codes.get(type.GearsOfWar4);
windows_store.redeem(id, mscode);
nv.database.save(id, nv_code, mscode);
nv.database.invalidate(nv_code);
}

Their database can easily save everything and have that 1:1 association. All they would need is a list from Amazon for the cancelled preorders. Search in their database for those keys and put them in a list. Send to Microsoft and MS can revoke keys from looking at ID and code associated with it. I could code up that work in less than a day. It's all the other things that one has to worry about when invalidating and that's knowing intent because all the people you are hurting are potential customers (that could still buy DLC) and all the "bad guys" get away only to wait for it to happen again. That's why in most cases the companies just stop what happens, let the other guys go, and go after the "bad guys"

Yeah I meant that in general it wasn't a 1:1 code as in it generated a separate CDkey, keeping track shouldn't be an issue.

Well I bought a code from a fellow GAFer for the regular $30+ price and the code definitely was from Amazon. This was before I found out about this mess. I sent a PM and hopefully they will confirm it was an actual legit code. Would really suck to spend $30+ and have the game revoked. I already activated the game on my Microsoft account and downloaded the 5 mb file or whatever size the mini download was. I also removed Nvidia's permissions so Microsoft will actually have to revoke it if anything. Plus, why even give Nvidia unneeded app access to my Microsoft account?

Ah, yes. You're correct.

1. Redeem the code on your behalf so you don't have to go to Windows Store and redeem key yourself. <---This is the only one we know for sure.
2. Tracking and associating code with account.

Wait a minute, is this actually gonna be 80GB?!? I have unlimited bandwidth, but holy hell. Does it come on two discs for people who buy physical?

Wait it's really 80GB? Fuck me and RIP to anyone with a 500gb console with no external. That's without all the free DLC aswell, holy shit.

Multiplayer will be a separate download in that case, it was like that for Halo 5 wasn't it?

Maybe it's uncompressed on PC.

I doubt it is more than one disk on xbox one. Or maybe they let you download the multiplayer on console?

Size is very odd, pre-rendered cutscenes?

It won't be 80gb on console.

I think the file size on Xbox is less it is the PC version that is the very large size from what I have read.

Had to get Windows 10 anniversary update first to install this game and the update completely fucked my system. It now freezes randomly, sometimes right after boot sometimes an hour after. Hard reset is the only option. It seems it is a common problem for PCs with SSDs and Anniversary update. MS's solution (which they gave months back)?- Go back to older versions! Then how the fuck am I supposed to play the game? The game wont even install if I dont have the anniversary update! WTF is this bullshit!

Woah woah woah, I'm seeing a scary amount of recall comments on the past two pages. Do we have any new information this afternoon that suggests they'll be recalling these codes?

Seriously, when I bought mine there was zero talk in this thread about any sort of Amazon scam/glitch (you can check my posts to see that). I was 100% under the impression it was just a guy that didn't want his code, like many pre-order or game codes sold on eBay over the last several years.

Like....how do I get my money back if this gets revoked?

For me Anniversary update doesn't even install, install crashes without any error and rollsback. Doesn't seem they are in hurry fixing anything.

First thing to do after you get the anniversary update...check Windows Update, they have cumulative updates after that. I wouldn't recommend rolling back. Sometimes a hard restart will let you see more cumulative updates.

Try to get a picture of the receipts and you'll be fine I think. Contact the seller.

You probably need 80 GB of space to download and install it. After you're done, it probably uses 40 GB of space. This doesn't help you much in the sense that you still need to free up the 80 GB of space to do the install but at least it doesn't take up all the space the whole time.

Our digital future never looked brighter. This is why I buy my console games on discs.

So has Amazon or Nvidia made any statement in the last day that is giving everyone the impression they'll be revoked?

The fuck, it says 80GB on the Xbox Marketplace.
Hmmmm, oh well.

:)

"With the release of Gears of War 4 coming up soon, Microsoft has now started to talk about important release topics such as pre-loading and its file size on console.

Gears of War community director Adam Fletcher wrote on Twitter that Microsoft will talk specifics on pre-loading "soon." Though we'll have to wait, he did assure fans that they will have "plenty of time to pre-load," suggesting this may start days before the game's official release on October 11.

Part of this may have to do with the fact that Gears of War 4 will unlock four days early, on October 7, for people who buy the $100 Ultimate Edition.

As for the Gears of War 4 file size, Microsoft already said you'll need a whopping 80 GB of free space on PC. But as for Xbox One, Fletcher said the console size may be smaller. "While large .. the PC size shouldn't be the indicator for Xbox," he explained."

I was ready for the digital future at launch of the Xbox One. I bought a 4TB external for launch (I think for like $70 at the time). I've only used 27%. I basically have a 4.5TB system. I figured it would last me 4 years when I figured it would be 80 games at 50GB each to fill it up. I knew I wouldn't buy 80 games of that size in 4 years (I know some gamers do). I also figured, if I do reach full capacity, I'll just buy another 4TB or even bigger now and be set again.

The only pain I'm going to have is when I buy a Scorpio, I'll buy another 4TB or larger external but I'll have to copy them all over, it'll suck because I gotta do it one by one but it'll be ok.

I've been living the digital future dream! Not one regret.

It happens in every misprice thread, people coming in saying that it's stealing because your taking advantage and not paying MSRP...etc.
Just ignore them because time and time again we've seen you can't win the argument with them.

This isnt a misprice. This was straight up stealing (aka piracy)

But, you cant argue with pirates, they always think their actions are acceptable.

How do you plan to play the game then man? I would rollback if not for the game requiring it.

Tried those. Updated fully. Nothing helped. On the internet it seems MS hasnt fixed the problem as of yet.

But it's not stealing for those of us who came in and bought these codes before it was known that this was a big glitch people were taking advantage of. Like I said before, when I bought my code it was the only code on eBay, and nothing anywhere online suggested to me that people were stealing these codes.

Any word when the $370 suggested retail price GTX-1070s will be available?

All I see on Amazon and at my local Best Buys and Fry's are the $450 Founders Edition versions.

I couldn't live with paying close to $500 (after taxes) for a second best version of a graphics card, even if it comes with a free game. $400 even hurts a little but it's more dooable.

Ok, I know this may not be ideal, but it may help. Try getting into the Insider Program (but do release preview ring aka the slowest of all the rings). It's in the settings -> Update -> Windows Insider Program.

Do another update to your system...and then try to roll back from that. It will be time consuming though. Granted the absolute best thing is to do a Windows PC Refresh/Reset. Though I believe you will lose installed programs if you do a Refresh, but you won't lose files. I can't remember. The Reset is basically a clean install. Most issues with Anniversary Update is because most installs of Windows 10 come from upgrades of Windows 7. All those migrations probably fucked something in there (yes, MS fault). I wouldn't do it unless it's the absolute last thing.

There's some 399 ones at Newegg. IIRC the MSRP is 379 and that's typically just for reference versions so there's not a lot of options, if any at that.

Well, didn't know this was an exploit and bought two codes from Reddit for me and a friend. I redeemed mine earlier today and he just tried and he's says it's disabled...

What about those who buy it and return it? Or legitimate cancellation reasons?

Let's not act like this is the worst thing in the world. Price errors, price matches, loopholes, etc all happen and there's little moral outcry over that.

Saw on Slickdeals that Jet.com lets you get 10% off with the coupon shop10 right now. Looked at an EVGA one for ~$360 or a few dollars cheaper if you give up free returns.

Not the ideal place for a major purchase as far as support and such goes, but they are a legitimate site anyway.

edit: Though I don't think they come with the Gears code.

No this may as well have been a misprice because it was in the same vein, Amazon as the seller screwed up, it doesn't matter if the difference in price and MSRP was little or large or the entirety of it.

Now those who abused the glitch for the purpose of making a profit, that's a different story all together; however, it still falls in a grey area, albeit much, much darker. This issue isn't black and white. What if this was a digital game that was mispriced to free and people bought it? What if the misprice wasn't all of the MSRP, but 50%, and people bought 10 keys to resell them at higher prices? Or what if people only bought one copy for themselves, not for the purpose of making profit? Where do you draw the line between taking advantage of a seller's mistake? Is it theft only when one does it for profit? What about legitimate situations where stores sell for a lower price than usual, and someone buys 10 copies to sell at a higher price, for profit? What is the real, objective difference between a misprice and an intended lower price, and should the buyer care?

You can try and justify it as much as you want but it's still theft especially when the keys are obtained through non-legitimate ways.

Look at the pictures of the video cards.

G1 Gaming comes with a factory OC and the same 3-fan cooler used by the 1080 G1 Gaming.

Windforce is not factory OC'd and has a different 2-fan cooler.

If you bought the graphics card for its own sake and then changed your mind, then you haven't done anything wrong. No one says you aren't allowed to follow a store's return policy.

But if you bought the card just to cancel it in order to get something bundled with it for free? Yeah, you obviously did something wrong.

Yeah I saw the fans. Does the OC make a big difference?

I'm sorry, I don't know too much. I've been out of the game for a while. My last/current card is the 660ti.

In the case of a price mistake, you still agreed to buy an item for the price the merchant was charging for it in good faith. You're right that the consumer really doesn't have a moral imperative to watch out for a merchant's revenue.

But in this situation, the transaction was not in good faith. The consumer never intended to keep the product that was purchased, while never returning the bundled item.

You can try and justify it as much as you want but it's still theft especially when the keys are obtained through non-legitimate ways.
There is no justification one way or the other, that's what I'm trying to illustrate. Ethical dilemmas require open minds, you need to see things from different perspectives, because there is no right answer. If the seller didn't make a mistake and the buyer took that item, that's black and white. If the seller made a mistake that allowed the buyer to take the item, that's grey.
Or you can nudge the issue away without thinking it through and accuse me of trying to justify it when I did no such thing, all because you are entrenched in your one and only perspective.

Yeah I saw the fans. Does the OC make a big difference?

I'm sorry, I don't know too much. I've been out of the game for a while. My last/current card is the 660ti.

You can always OC a video card yourself, but the difference in fans may be meaningful to you. I don't know much about 1070s and how hot they run, but Googling for a few reviews should get you the info you need on that.

You can try and justify it as much as you want but it's still theft especially when the keys are obtained through non-legitimate ways.

I struggle to think what is truly illegitimate about this, or how it warrants to be called 'theft'. It's a fuck-up. You were always going to keep your code, even when you actually had the GPU shipped to you and then decided to send it back.
It's amoral to take advantage of it, but that's it. It's no different from pricing-errors, except this time it's straight-up free. As if a publisher erroneously offered his game on the internet for everyone to download for free.

It's wrong, but equating it with piracy or even theft is extremely close-minded.

So I paid 7 bucks. If it gets revoked, I won't be as mad. But I would like to , dispute my 7 bucks because I really wasn't aware that it was a glitch being abused. I really thought it was ppl with excess amount of codes. Idk. Meh. What a clusterfuck.

Go to user settings and select manage your Microsoft account which will open a web browser where you log in. Under Security and Privacy, go to Apps: Manage Permissions. It will ask for password, once entered you can remove Nvidia from App permissions.

The guy i bought my key from on Reddit said he got the codes from his friend who owns a computer shop so i don't think they all came from the amazon glitch.
