Darkest Dungeon |OT| A festering mecca of antediluvian evil

I've been waiting for so long for the game to be released on vita and I missed the pre-order rebate. Still made the purchase.

EDIT: please note that devs are actively collecting and listening feedback and patching improvements already.

First impressions on vita:
+ love the concept, the art, the narrator and the gameplay mechanics. GREAT STUFF
- UI is absolutely horrendous in its current state:
  • barely legible text
  • not graphic button prompts only commands (thank you game for telling me to press [help] for getting help but what IS the help button?)
  • icons are the size of a fly fooprint wiht no labels
  • navigation makes zero sense to me (yet?): am I supposed to be press X or square or start to confirm something? Should I be holding the left or right bumper while doing that? Who knows? It's all a gamble. It's slightly better during combat and dungeon crawling
  • Relying on the rear touchpad for essential AND common tasks (like switching or navigating between characters) is a mind-boggling decision. If you're like me and cannot hold the vita comfortably without touching the rear pad you'll be constantly and unvoluntarily shuffling your character roster
  • d-pad and left analogue stick have the exact same functions exept in a couple of instances where - for some reason - they don't
  • there seems to be no audio or visual feedback when you try to confirm some commands (it's particularly unnerving on the embark screen)
- bugs (?) :
  • the Y/X axis controls for map navigation are reversed (WTF?) and when you try to navigate the map IT AUTOMATICALLY MOVES AWAY FROM VIEW
  • game crashes

As far as I'm concerned, playing the game is a constant struggle against the UI (mostly in between dungeons). I'm willing to hang tough because the actual game is great and I hope to adapt but man this is a disappointing port on this front.

Does anyone have a problem with Mission Select? I try to pick the Ruins, but the game insists me on going to the Weald. It's like the selection is made with the analog stick rather than pressing a button.

A fine example of the confusing UI. Choose a mission by pressing X highlighting it and then START (I think?).

Yeah. You have to go over to the character select (R1) and work your way around the other missions or it just selects the last one you were on. You can also just press Start I think (on Vita)

LoL. Figured it out. You highlight the mission you want, then press the right side of the touch-pad to take you to the Provision-screen.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong here but my characters are getting A LOT of negative quirks. Way more than I can keep up with using the sanitarium. Should I just focus on ridding myself of the more annoying ones and living with the others or is there a way to limit how many my characters get?

The game is really cool though. Very addicting.

Also when do I start getting better gear to equip?

Oh sh*t!
I was going to buy it in order to play on Vita.
But....I think I'm going to wait.
Thanks.

Just messed around with this a bit yesterday. The controls are definitely going to take some getting used to, but that will come with time. My main complaint is why they hell the text is so small. I can barely read it from my couch, which isn't very far away from my 65" television. I had to sit on the ottoman closer to the screen to comfortably read some of the pop-ups.

Again, I'll get used to that too. But sheesh.

There's a limit to the number of positive and negative quirks a character can get. Once you reach that limit, you don't stop getting new quirks though. The new quirks just override old ones, unless those quirks have a little lock next to them, which means they won't be replaced and it costs WAY more to remove them. You can add locks to good quirks at the sanitarium.

You're never going to remove all of them, so the best plan is to remove really troubling ones, like negative accuracy mods and kleptomania.

In terms of gear, it depends on what kind of gear you're talking about. The only way to get better weapons and armor is through the smithy, and the best way to get new accessories is to do higher level missions. You can also buy accessories, but they cost a ton, so I never bothered.

Well, I'm not getting my $30 back, so I guess I'll have to muddle through. Shitty UI design really hurts a game.

The higher your stress at the end of a dungeon, the higher your chance to get a negative quirk at the end.

They're usually mild annoyances, and nothing you should waste money on until endgame. If you're really flowing in cash, lock good multi-functional positive quirks instead.

Tried the PS4 version.

It's better mainly due to L1/R1 for hero switching being serviceable (unlike Vita rear touchpad). Also:
- dungeon map is not bugged (although the X/Y axis are still reversed)
- text seems legible to me although it is quite small (60'' tv and I sit pretty close)

Navigation/controls on hamlet/embark/provision screens are far from perfect but much better than on vita.

Still don't understand why equipping/unequipping trinkets is so clumsy and I'm still baffled by the way the right analogue stick is underused.

Game is very addictive nonetheless.

How does equipping trinkets work? I know how to unequip them all but no idea how to equip them.

It's very silly that digipad left+right or analog stick left+right isn't character switching on Vita, instead of being the same.

Right analog stick also makes no sense. It's used every 4 minutes or so one time. Make it a thumb select on Vita, because it's a touchscreen.

Brace yourself.

You're on the hamlet screen
- Hold R2
- Select character
- Press square
- You can now release R2
- Navigate character screen with d-pad or analogue left until you reach the Equipment tab in the bottom left
- Press Triangle
- Choose trinket in the newly opened trinket window
- Press X
- Choose one of the two slots
- Press X again
- Sigh with relief

At no point during the process should your fingers touch the rear pad because it either switches characters or the roster sorting list.

For some reason it seems you cannot select a trinket and then a character to equip it.

Yup. Makes no sense. D-pad for character switching would work just fine. And give me the option to toggle instead of holding.

I know the game is difficult; but to what degree?
Can you screw up your party to the point that you can't finish the game?

So the Vita is a good way to play this?, I played a very early version on PC ages ago, so I am interested in seeing how it's improved.

Steamworld Hiest is my goto turn based 2D game at the moment, I assume this could usurp that?

It's perfect, honestly. I actually found the tiny text and details harder to make out on my TV when playing on PS4 than I did on Vita. Also, the game crashed on PS4 when setting out on a run. No crashes on Vita yet.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Well, I'm not getting my $30 back, so I guess I'll have to muddle through. Shitty UI design really hurts a game.

I don't think the UI is horrendous at all. Very serviceable. The controls take a little adjusting, lots of tricks had to be used to adapt from keyboard and mouse. The mouse is far more elegant but the control scheme on PS4 and Vita (mostly) makes sense.

I do hope a patch can address the following:

- Option to turn off back touchpad on VITA. Too easy to hit on accident on OLED VITA.
- Touchscreen implementation! I can't believe there isn't any! The ability to tap on abilities and characters and drag n drop to equip would make things less cumbersome. Scratching my head here.

Wow, this sounds way more complicated than it needs to be, much easier with mouse and keyboard.

Wow, this sounds way more complicated than it needs to be, much easier with mouse and keyboard.

I mean, it's not hard on a controller either, but the issue is that it's counter intuitive. The menu doesn't offer prompts for all of it's items so I frequently find myself 'guessing' what to press until I hit the right button.

This is especially awkward on the Vita because of the rear touch screen, which if you're not careful will mess with the character menu while you're attempting to do something else. It's a good game, but the controls take some getting used to. Despite that though, that doesn't make it a bad experience, it's just as I say, they just take some getting used to.

I had issues with the UI being too small on the PC with no scaling options because of unity so this is dissapointing to hear. I was hoping the console version would have addressed this.

- Option to turn off back touchpad on VITA. Too easy to hit on accident on OLED VITA.
- Touchscreen implementation! I can't believe there isn't any! The ability to tap on abilities and characters and drag n drop to equip would make things less cumbersome. Scratching my head here.

That would certainly help a lot. Here are the things I was thinking could improve the controls on VITA:

- Replace character switching from [hold R2+ analogue or d-pad] with d-pad or right analogue only. At least switch from [hold] to [toggle]
- Implement alternative way to choose a direction to go to when in dungeon rooms in order to free the right analogue stick for something else. A combination of buttons would be ok here.
- Fix the dungeon map so the x/y axis are not reversed and it doesn't scroll automatically when you press R2
- Allow the equipping of a trinket from the trinket screen: selected trinket shouldn't be more than a couple of button presses away from trinket slot. Using X to move trinkets around doesn't seem that useful to me (but I don't have a lot yet)
- On the embark screen, pressing X should lock the selected mission

I see on twitter that the devs are collecting feedback and planning improvements already (crash fix and button prompts to be implemented on next patch). That's great news.

That's really good!

Well, bad UI choices or not, I'm happy to support them with my money - the art style and presentation are top notch!

Equip[ping trinket on PC:

- Left click Trinket chest to open
- Right click hero's portrait to open
- Drag trinket into empty slot
- Press ESC twice to close windows

How can they make it so hard on the controller? Sounds like a nightmare.

Here are 2 Champion runs I literally just did:

Ruins (Medium): Occulist/Plague Doctor/Grave Robber/Hellion <- Hellion and GR burst down the back row stress dealers, PD either stacks blights on front rows or stuns stress dealers. Never had anyone at risk of dying.

Cove (Long): Occulist/Plague Doctor/Grave Robber/Bounty Hunter <- GR throws daggers at back rows, PD stacks massive blights (sometimes double stuns, like when there are 2 Shaman), BH begins with upper cuts to Pelagic Guardian then just attacks open front row targets. Front 3 rows ALWAYS take a minus bleed chance trinket, to counter Uca Crushers pinches. Came out with minimal stress.

For Warrens, try something like Occulist/Houndmaster/Bounty Hunter/Hellion.

Weald, you have to take an Occulist, to debuff the Giant's damage, then run a Grave Robber, Highwayman, and Hellion in front.

Easy work

thanks for the tips.

i rarely use plague doctor, seems like i should change that..

Plague Doctor is super strong. She has double back row blight, double back row stun, a single target stun that shuffles, can heal any rank of blight or bleed (also heals health so can save a teammate from Death's Door), and has a strong melee attack that bleed.

She also has great camping skills (+50% heal, one that cures disease), and probably has the strongest class specific trinkets, beside the Leper. Blasphemous Vial (+15 ACC ranged skills, +40% stun chance, +20% blight chance, +15% stress dmg) is damn near broken.

Pro Tip: Give Occulist a Cleansing Crystal, and he will never bleed with his heal.

Constantly crashing on PS4 for me, about once a dungeon which is frustrating.

Fun so far I think? Just biased due to crashes wiping out when rng is on my side and I breeze through a dungeon.

For those who don't know, the devs on the subreddit have been responding to all complaints there and have been giving answers left and right.

/u/RedHookJohn has also said that there will be a patch submitted tonight to Sony that will hopefully drop as soon as it passes certification regarding crashes.

On top of that,
/u/RedhookJohn has also said they're taking feedback on vita's controls.

There's also an update on the official PS4/PS Vita Mega Thread on the Subreddit:

UPDATE 1: We have isolated a crash that was affecting Russian language players. We also have a good line on the first time Provisions Crash that is affecting some players. Various UI issues that were reported are also fixed, as well as we will be adding button previews for the bottom icons (TRIANGLE over the Trinket menu) to help with some of the UI confusion that is happening. These fixes should be out in a patch later this week.

--

I was worried before hand about all the crashes and what not, but this game along with XCOM 2, Guilty Gear, AC Syndicate & Blackflag should hold me till December. I'll buy it while it's $20.

Hopefully the non-PC UI will be improved over time.

What's the performance like on Vita?

Load times are a bit on the long side but other than that it performs really well for what it's aiming to achieve. Also the art downscale is well done unlike other ports like Rogue Legacy.

Yesssss but there is the small matter of the Occultist maybe killing you. I actually prefer to the take party members with strong self heals like the Leper.

The bleeding occurs very rarely from occultist (especially if your party has bleed resist) and you will never "outbleed" what you generally heal with him.

Over time though, the vestal with healing buff items will keep your whole party alive.

I didn't realise the PS4 version had already released. This game got my attention as soon as I saw a screenshot of it so I'm definitely gonna pick it up.
Are there any tips I should know before starting the game?

Oh no.. The Vita version crashed when I went on the first mission. How did this pass cert? Needs to be patched..

Esit: Good to see it is on the way!

Man, the music and overall audio in this game is incredible. Reminds me of Diablo 2.

Newbie player but here's my two cents:

- Don't get attached to heroes. They absolutely are and need to be expandable. Don't hesitate to ditch them or send them on suicide runs.
- Start by upgrading the first two trees of the coach (at least a couple of notches) so that you have access to a more diverse roster.
- Don't ever go in a dungeon with a charater above 40 or 50 stress unless you're doing a suicide run.
- Cut your losses and leave the fight/dungeon before wiping!
- Characters will die or get mad. Probably both.
- A tank/dps/dps/healer might be easier to manage in the beginning but isn't compulsory. Be on the lookout for characters that have self-heals/stress relief skills.
- Use AOE skills sparingly. It's incommensurably better to have 1 mob dead than 2 half alive.
- Two heroes of the same class don't necessarily start with the same skill set (this confused me a lot at first)
- You can't camp in short dungeons (so no need to worry about camping skills in the beginning)

And you can just buy whatever important self-heal skill you need once you unlock the guild building.

Found another way by accident.

In the trinket menu press R on Vita (R2 on PS4 I think) and press square on the hero. Then you can just move the trinket by pressing X and moving it over to the left.

Having played a bit more, right analog stick should be character switching and with a modifier key the selection of what room you want to go towards. That way they don't use the touchscreen but it will still be better, as character switching is way more common than room direction.

Sweet, this sounds better. I'm gonna test this later (although I thought I tried something similar with no success).

Currently, the UI/interaction is so confusing that I'll be just putting this aside for now until it's cleaned up. Text is too small, and nothing is intuitive. x sometimes confirms, sometimes not. Right trigger sub-selects some things, but not what you'd expect, and then you have to toggle other things. Constantly accidentally selecting heroes and since it auto-selects another hero, if I press x they'll switch places, which I don't want.

It's kind of staggering how confusing and unintuitive the controls are at the moment.
