Put down DQ7 (PS1) over 100 hours in and Golden Sun (WiiU) past a boat trip. Picked up Final Fantasy V and Arabian Nights on SNES. Maybe I'll finish something some day.
I refinished FFX yesterday. Basically went the entire game with Tidus/Wakka/Rikku. Lulu hasn't even learnt the -ra spells, Auron and Yuna haven't moved since the beginning either. I did use Kihmari at the beginning as a substitute thief until Rikku was recruited, then he was dumped to the depths of hell like everyone else.
All Thieves party is so OP.
Killed all the Dark Aeons and Penance, something that my kid self had extreme difficulty doing due to spreading out my resources across all characters back then.
On KH RE:CoM. I'm pretty sure I'm at the end of Sora's mode (I think I finished it on GBA way back when, but I definetely did play it). Probably can't be fucked playing Riku's story, might just jump straight into KH2 (as I think Re:CoM is boring as hell).
Trails of Cold Steel 2:
6.5 hours into game. Kinda like CS1 minus the school thing, which is better.
Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity:
If you want an Ys-like game, then you should pick this up. It's simple yet it's fun. Enemies are bullet-hell like but you can spam attacks and kill them. Game looks great apparently for a doujin title.
The story and characters were excellent and the music was epic as expected. Zero instantly became one of my fave female characters in gaming.
Gameplay-wise this entry is a lot more action than the others, it's very much in the DMC/Bayonetta sphere of action. Obviously this game didn't have the budget they did but D3's combat is pretty damn solid.
SPOILER
Can't believe they
ruined the final boss with that gameplay
, it was so memorable other than that. Ended up youtubing it.
Still trucking along with FFX-2 HD (now in chapter 3). God the chapters are boring as hell. Terrible childish cast and terrible writing. All I want to do is play the monster arena, but I've already beaten everything that I can beat until chap 5. Such a slog...
So I just finished I Am Setsuna. Still playing Nier, but since the story is being told in chunks, I'll be ok with more than one rpg at a time. On that note, I gotta choose between Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Trails of Cold Steel 1.
I'll probably restart xenoblade x or tales of xillia somewhere down the line, especially with World of FF and FFXV around the corner.
Other than that, i'm loving the game, put just over 20 horus in to it so far and unless something happens (like a difficulty curve, or more places like the one we're on about) I think this might be one of the few JRPGs I actually finish!
Got Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth yesterday and decided to give it a try this morning. I clocked in 14 hours for the day. I guess in the absence of Persona 5, Digisona will have to quench my thirst. lol
It's obviously low budget, the localization could be better and some of the more aggravating tropes that people complain about in current JRPGs are definitely present here (Kyoko and Nokia character designs' look straight out of a hentai manga and wtf was that hohoho chick with the purple hair, who even talks like that) but damn if it's not addictive. Besides the first 30 minutes or so which were ridiculously unbalanced on Hard
(like what the hell, random encounters were killing me on 3 hits and they always came in groups of 2)
the game has been pretty easy so far, which I guess is to be expected. That Farm Island, at least early on, is quite overpowered, specially since I'm the kind of player who leaves the game on standby to do some other stuff for a while. Dungeons so far have also been really basic and from what I've read that is unlikely to change.
Still, even with all its flaws, I'm currently loving this game. If I told my 12 year old self I'd be teaming up with Guilmon, Agumon, Patamon, Terriermon and Gabumon in an actually really good Digimon JRPG my mind would've been blown. As someone who loved Adventures 1 and Tamers it feels so cool to have these guys in my team. Now all I need is Impmon and Renamon and I'm set. And hell yeah I'm gonna digivolve that Keramon all the way to Diaboromon. And don't even get me started on the best mon ever, Beelzemon. Playing this game really makes me wish for a sequel with a bigger budget to see its potential fully realized, but with Bamco on charge I doubt it.
Story has been cool so far, even if nothing to write home about. Really like the whole cyber sleuth concept.
So, how often should I be devolving my Digimons? I've done it so far once with every one of my main mons from champion to rookie for the ABI and also because I can't carry too many of them anyway. Any other stuff I should be aware of?
I wanted something that isn't going to be a huge time commitment so started replaying Golden Sun, which I haven't touched in over a decade.
Boy, it really does feel like a prologue to the superior Book 2, The Lost Age. The level design is still top notch but otherwise the narrative is a bit boring. Luckily Camelot's stellar presentation makes even the most uneventful story scenes feel acceptable to play through, outside of the inspired town and dungeon designs.
I wouldn't really call Golden Sun generic, it's one of the few RPGs to put an emphasis on organic, puzzle-driven level designs. Even the towns are well designed and exploration feels meaningful rather than superficial.
The plot of the first game is, indeed, not worth writing home about, though. The Lost Age is better in almost every way.
Arc the Lad 1&2 feel close to this. They have that "familiar, yet different world" feel that Wings had. It seems somewhat similar to Earth but things are just a little off. Technology wise it feels similar to 20th century Earth. Each region in Arc has it's own look, and some of the religious mysticism in Arc reminds me of WoH. Not sure if I can find a pic to convey it best but Arc the Lad 1&2 are the two that immediately remind me of Wings Of Honneameise.
I looked at some screenshots for Wings Of Honneameise, never heard of it before but the art looks amazing, totally something I'd be into.
I love the first 2 Arc games (well, more-so the second, since the first is just an extended intro for the second), and the setting and more somber plot is a huge reason why this is the case.
Anyways, not playing any RPG at the moment but I'm gonna start Suikoden 5 this weekend, the final game in the series for me to play. Looking forward to it, but I hear it has a slow-as-balls start.
Booked some vacation time at work, one week off in Oct, one in Nov, and one in Dec, so that means lots of quality RPG playin'!
DQ VII 3DS. I've been really enjoying it and it is not at all what I expected. Light on combat/character growth RPG for 20 hours or so until Alltrades is available and it starts to feel like a normal DQ after that in terms of pacing. That they lessened the grind and upped the encounter rate does boggle the mind a bit. How slow did this game used to go? But again in a weird way, with that low encounter rate.
Strength is really in the vignettes which are quite well done and variable in content, length, etc. And there are so many of them. I also like the premise and it sets up a huge world better than I felt the world of DQ VI was set up.
I think the team that made the DS Zeldas and SS played this game though, with the map tablets and all.

I played through AtL 1+2 early last year and loved them, the second in particular is an epic adventure.
At the moment I'm played DQVII, really enjoying it. The variable length of the little stories makes for really interesting pacing and a sense of adventure as you just don't know what to expect next.
Right now I'm making my way through Atelier Escha and Logy on the PS3 and I'm having a lot of fun
Sometimes I get the feeling I'm not playing the game quite right, though. I can get my main assignments done no problem, of course, but I always end up missing out on completing the outer ring of extra credit assignments; and I never quite feel like I have enough resources to advance my characters' equipment properly
Finally finished Bravely Second. The story is a huge step down from Default due to the more cheerful nature this time around, but thankfully the gameplay and the awesome 4th wall breaking moments more than make up for it.
Had a blast completing everything.
Now on to replaying FFXIII for platinum after I finish distracting myself with Enslaved. Wish me luck.
Finished Cold Steel a couple of days ago and I picked up Digimonstory Cyber Sleuth during the PSN Flash sale, so I'm not playing that. Not too far in, just about an hour.
Since I'm busy with college and life, I'm not playing anything NEW (which I'm actually craving), but I'm replaying Parasite Eve on PSVIta, just blasting through (I have the ultimate weapon and armor).
This game (and OST) never gets old. Can't believe I still love this game so much. Since 19 fucking 98!
I hope you enjoy this wonderful game...but i HIGHLY suggest a guide. There is no way you will get the best ending without it. Also, crazy as it might seem, playing on hard is the easiest way to play this game.
I just finished Bravely Second this weekend and started on Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. Still need to find some time to get back to playing Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
Was fighting a certain boss and for a milisecond I celebrated, then I remembered that I'm playing Ni No Kuni and stopped my celebration. Lo and behold, after what would have been the ending in 99% of other games, was just a stopgap for even more stuff.
I've been using Mite+upgrades and DrongO+upgrades for most of the game. Only now starting to focus on other familiars.
I picked up Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Rising on PS4 the other day....
I gotta say the game is really fun on higher difficulties. The combat is pretty awesome and I'm really enjoying it. I almost never bought it because I'm not a huge fan of the overly anime characters and story, but...well I love it!

I'm just going to wing it, maybe play a second time with a guide, maybe just watch the best ending on YouTube.
I got really obsessive a few years back about collecting everything and best endings and was playing everything with a guide and it really just ruined my enjoyment of gaming so I just gave it all up, play blind, and then go back after one play through and see what I missed.

I also picked up Fairy Fencer F on the flash sale.
This was my honest attempt at giving Compile Heart another chance. The combat on harder difficulties is better for sure. The activity loop is small so far, which isn't good. The characters are kind of irritating, or messed up if I was to consider them anything close to a person. The dungeons are bland, and uninspired.
But going back to the combat, its pretty engaging, and I like the constant drip feed of challenges upping my stats. For whatever reason I feel like putting more in, in hopes that some of these weird personalities flesh out.

Keep going.....Will be interesting to read your impressions later. Also, this game has more than one ending so be sure to get them all. It's not that hard.
Also, L2 or R2 is your friend. It let's you skip animations and make battles much, much faster, especially against mobs. Use furies to make leveling up easier and reduce the grinding.
This is on my list of games to get to after Valkyrie Profile, and maybe Etrian Odyssey. I have an old Etrian Odyssey save from a years ago where I finally made it to the second stratum.
Etrian Odyssey is another intimidating, dense RPG for me. That's a game where I definitely wanted to read some supplemental literature on because I was afraid of making the wrong choices with party makeup and really gimping myself.
I am finally experimentingvmore with familiars. For the longest of time, I just used the same guys. I have completed half of the fights in the arena and I'm also searching for secret treasures. I'm at 91/100. I don't think I will bother with catching all familiars. I don't think I have the patience for that.
In Cyber Sleuth, I just digivolved some of my digimon because they weren't leveling up anymore. I'm just going blind. I hope this won't give me trouble later in the game. (Playing on Normal.)
Just beat Final Fantasy VII for the first time. I've now beaten IV-VII. Goal is to beat IV-XII eventually, but the next game I play will be Persona 4 Golden.

I'm trying to work my way through the NeoGAF essential RPGs list too so I've been trying to hit the Final Fantasy games that appear there as a priority.
On the other hand, Final Fantasy has been a pretty big part of my life so I'll probably hit the first three at some point. I met my fiancee in FFXI like 10 years ago, I grew up on the PS1 era games, have some Amano art books, and went to Distant Worlds a couple years ago. That said, I never actually completed one until hitting the SNES games beginning in 2014. I'm an SNES collector, so that's why I started there. The first three games just haven't really done anything to grab my attention at this point, I guess.
Hunted down the PSP copies of Star Ocean First Departure and Second Evolution.
Playing through the first one since I never finished it years ago. I just finished recruiting the clingy Ocarina cat-girl (her name escapes me). I heard way too many good things about the second game so I'm eager to get into it soon. But I think I'm playing P3P after First Departure since I don't want to overload myself on Star Ocean.
So far I beat the first dungeon and story is laughable so far and characters are like from modern cheap anime with all their dumb predicted behaviors and cliches and they are killing my motivation to go on.
dungeons are nice and the great combat will likely keep me going for now.
