what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

So far I beat the first dungeon and story is laughable so far and characters are like from modern cheap anime with all their dumb predicted behaviors and cliches and they are killing my motivation to go on.

dungeons are nice and the great combat will likely keep me going for now.

What turns me off when I play is the damn battles are so long unless I missed an option to turn off all the mid-battle full on concerts.

I don't mind most battles, but the first boss did summon some minions(even though I killed another group of minions at first)

if most bosses have minions and then summon some more.....

Trying to finally beat The World End With You. I've owned the game for years, love the music and art direction, find the gameplay unique and engaging. So know it's time to actually finish it.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3.

Already beat Re;Birth1 and Re;Birth2 this year. Might as well finish Re;Birth3 too. Then I'll finally play the spinoffs and Megadimension (PS4)

Ok I'm out on Fairy Fencer F. Someone asked if its worth $60, lol, no.

The loop here is so shallow you'll see it within a two hour window with ease. The production values are so low, and I'm tired of these games that just have moving anime cut outs with way too much heavy breathing that talk there way through cutscenes. Flashes on the screen stand for someone getting attacked for real, its so budget and lame.

The characters are all paint by numbers and a lot of them just can't be sympathized with.

And the dungeons. WTF. I haven't played a ton of this game, but I have seen copy and paste dungeons already, and not parts of it copied and pasted I'm talking wholesale copy and paste of the whole layout. Also other towns are just f'n more corridors, there is nothing "town" about them!

What sucks is that the battle system is decent and the development systems are multiple levels and interesting, what a waste.

Mediocre JRPG at best, I'm out and I don't recommend this to anyone.

Digimon Story: Cyber Slueth

About 8 hours in, and holy crap, this story is hot garbage. I don't know how much longer I can hang on. Glad I got this on sale. It feels very much an also ran. I still like the designs, and I really think the only reason I've been playing as long as I have is nostalgia. I'll probably nope out after I get WereGarurumon. He's the best, and there is little point to playing after I have the best Digimon in the Digital World.

After finishing I am Setsuna and Deus Ex I started one of my most awaited jrpg this year which is Dragon Quest VII .

I will be playing this one for a while I think, I still haven't unlocked the jobs after 15h lol .

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga and Valkyria Chronicles

I do like lots of things about M&L but for some reason I fuck up the timing a lot in the battles which is frustrating..I'm good at rhythm games usually but this game seems to have my number

About halfway (I think?) through SMT4: Apocalypse. I'm really enjoying it; it's a combination of every good bit of SMT4 (of which there are plenty, I adored that game) and some really welcome improvements in about every area, from navigation to quest management to the partner system and I'm even enjoying the more character-driven narrative. The demon fusion aspect is super overwhelming for me, but I'm hanging in there and I've definitely made it past some tricky fights so I'm confident I'll finish it.

After this I'm trying to decide between I Am Setsuna, Tales of Symphonia (is the PC port good? Supposedly it got a patch that fixed many of the issues it had when it released?) and Stardew Valley.

The "mystery" over arching story of a conglomerate being involved in some shady government shit with some personal interest via possible cover up murders is actually not too bad in Digimon's story, but the localization is just kinda killing it for me. I hear it gets better the closer to the end as the mystery gets solved, but so far it's not the best.

Even mechanically Digimon is just ok. Battles are over within a turn or two as I just match up types/elements against their weaknesses and one shot everything. Even bosses are next to nothing. 'Course this is on Normal difficulty.

Let me bold this part. I grant you FFF isn't a title for everyone and Compile Heart does take assets re-use as a freaking art form. This isn't something exclusive to this title either, but in FFF was perhaps one of the few where the re-use didn't bothered me as much if compared to Neptunia series.

Now, in my opinion, the story improves by a lot once you go further in the game. And it isn't even particularly long either since you can skip battle animations, run in dungeons and use furries to make grinding extremely fast.

I guess my play time was around 50 hrs to see all endings and I enjoyed those. I also like CH games and fully expect budget titles, so big parts of your negatives didn't bothered me.

EDIT: What do you mean by towns are corridors ? The game doesn't have a single explorable town. The actual town are menu based navigation.

Around 20 hours into Dragon Quest VII 3DS. So far I am quite impressed and am having a lot more fun than I did with the 98 hours I spent on the PS1 release. Nice production values make a big difference to me and some of the enemy graphics are gorgeous. I love the episodic nature of much of the story. Each island feels like an episode in a TV show.

I will probably move onto V, VI, or IX whenever I get done with this.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (PS4) and Chrono Trigger (DS).

Digimon CS is a really fun game so far. While it has subpar graphics and the translation can be a bit poor sometimes, the battles are fun and I think the writing is good (despite the aforementioned translation issues), the Digivolving and battling mechanics keep me wanting to battle, and the story is pretty great. I sort of wish we could get a Pokemon game more like this, from a story perspective they've always lacked and I think Digimon as a whole tends to do story better than Pokemon most of the time (Pokemon Adventures manga is an exception as probably one of the only great Pokemon stories I've come across).

Regarding Chrono Trigger, I'm still pretty early on. This game has (obviously) been recommended to anyone for years so I finally found myself in an RPG mood and it was recommended by enough folks when I asked that I dove in and, so far, I'm loving it.

Paper Mario TTYD. Great game.

YES. Ugh this game is so great. I wish I could go back and play TTYD for the first time.

Started on Suikoden 5 and put in 15 hours so far. Just finished my first big troop-based battle. Now it plays like an RTS? Not my favorite genre of games but whatevs...

So far, so good... well, apart from the ugly graphical style (everything is so grey and washed-out) and the towns that are extremely large and hard to maneuver with no map. I've been prepared for the 'slow' start, because of impressions I've heard from other people, so it wasn't so bad. Though having all these people compete to win the hand in marriage of a loli girl was kinda funny and creepy :P I have a feeling this is gonna be a long-ass game since I don't even have my castle yet.

People say the Suikoden series and Trails series are similar, I never really saw it up until this game. The large towns with lots of little events, and slow pace of the story that is building up to something big
and to be fair, when Gizel took over the Sun Castle, that was pretty cool!
is very Trails-ish.

I don't know if I can hold out a solid 30 more hours before the story gets good. Dragon Quest 7 should be coming in the mail today, so I think I'll be playing that instead.

I was playing Dragon Quest 7, but I got kind of bored of it so I've put it aside for now.

I've been mainlining Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse, this game is awesome. Tons of awesome mechanical and quality of life improvements over Shin Megami Tensei IV, which I already loved.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Just finished the 1st Chapter and my opinion of the game has improved. The story is laughably silly but that's not standing in the way of my enjoyment of the battle system or presentation. I actually also enjoyed grinding my way through all 7 floors of the first real dungeon up to the game's first real boss. That part felt very much like a Persona game.

SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked (3DS). Really liking it so far, but I'm already questioning whether I'll be able to finish it because I see all these people talking about how the difficulty really spikes at the end. I'm also trying to avoid using a guide unless I get really stuck, so I'll probably get a crappy ending.

Next on the docket is to finish SMT IV, and then either SMT IV:A or DQ7. By the time I'm done with all that Persona 5 will probably be out.

Started the fan translation of Valkyria Chronicles 3, loved the first two games and really enjoying this one so far as well.

The idea of playing with a dishonored unit is pretty cool and the core VC gameplay is still so fun.

Whats a good jrpg to play on PC?
Of the ones released:

Maybe try Legend of Heroes: TitS 1 & 2. There's the Ys series if you want great action rpg with some platforming.

Tales of Symphonia is a fun rpg. A bit old, but still holds up.

There's more but I am sure you will get good recommendations from other posters.

If your MC is physical based, you should be ok at the end. I got screwed by being magic heavy.

Trails of cold steel. It is like persona. Except there is actual strategy in combat. Not just elemental advantages. Positioning, turn order, move ranges, movement, weapon ranges, orb slots, arts...etc It's fun.

There is also the light hearted school environment and even an underground school dungeon. I like the fact that isnt all there is to the game as that is what made persona boring (the randomized dungeons).

Obviously it isn't as polished as persona, but I cant help but notice they borrow from the same themes.

Cant wait to play part 2!

11 hours into Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth. Chapter 6 out of
20.

It's alright. Only liking it because, well, Digimon.

TMS is growing on me even though I still think the story and characters are crap. Loved the design of the chapter 1 boss. That was a long chapter for me.

I'm 20+ hours into Xenogears, but I'm not sure if I want to continue to play. The characters and story are actually interesting and it feels very mature, right from the bat 'stuff happens', but the combat is such a drag. I would actually enjoy the combo-system of the characters if done with purpose (and not just, do the most damage you can), but those don't play a role pretty much an hour after the beginning, since there is no reason to not use the Mechas (apart from learning combos) and you are even forced to use them most of the time. However, for such a big focus, the Mecha combat is actually among the worst combat systems I've ever seen. You do ONE attack, and then your best t1 combo on the next. Repeat forever. Right from the beginning of the game, all the way through the end (from what I can tell). There is really 0 strategy involved. Magic is pretty much non-existent and/or straight up useless.

Also, for the past 20 hours, I've been fighting the SAME ENEMIES over and over again, since the world map doesn't change and the dungeons aren't either. I just got to Nortune and hope NOW it does finally... farming XP and gold was such a drag.

The dialogue also drags on for way too long. I mean MGS has 1h cutscenes, but that's happening like every 30 minutes or so here with dialogue boxes. It's also very linear with little to nothing to do otherwise.

I want to like the game, but the 'game' part of it is just atrocious. Does it get better?

One of these days I'll finish Breath of Fire IV. Still chipping away at it. Has been incredibly slow going since I took a long break, and I've been playing it on vita. I have trouble playing handhelds while at home though, and haven't had much opportunity to play it while out of the house recently. Still looks absolutely amazing, really one of the best looking PS1 games I've ever played.

Wait what?
I mean at least Dark Souls is an RPG. Yakuza is an action-adventure game.
It does have jrpg elements and it is not the end of the world if we mention Yakuza in this thread. Many things I like about Yakuza have to do with similarities to jrpgs.

I finally finished Trails In The Sky First Chapter on PC. So I'll start with SC pretty soon (maybe tonight) and I'm also playing Shin Megami Tensei IV on 3DS. I'm currently working my way through the neutral route and finishing all the mandatory side quests. Hopefully I can finish this soon as well.

It's funny you should mention Souls when those games are a lot more action-adventure focused than rpg.

Going around town, talking to people, doing quests and side quests, mini games, leveling up, learning abilities, getting into random fights while outside etc., Yakuza has all of this. It easily qualifies as a jrpg in a modern setting.

Made it to the Agate (heh, if this game can't evoke TITS anymore) Prison in Suikoden 5. Enjoying it lots, even if I read a bit that there's a lot of missable characters if you're not careful, and I have to go in and get all 108 (since I've done it for all the other Suikodens so far).

Finished Bravely Default, with all jobs at level 14 and all party at level 99. I loved this game so much, clocked 55 hours.

I am playing Bravely Second now, and loving every second of it and I already have played it for 12 hours. After BS, I'll play Darkest Dungeon on Vita.

For all of you that are playing Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth:
This game is amazing, the story is just ok until chapter 10. From this chapter on, the story just grow and is an awesome story. Hang on!

Yakuza definitely could count as action RPG.

It has equipment with stats, exp and even random encounters. I don't think it's particularly different from something like Radiou 1 or 2.
