Giant Bomb PSVR stream | It's always Summer in PlayStation VR Nation

There's enough people saying they're having tracking issues that Sony must have either sent out a bunch of faulty units to these reviewers or the setup and environmental conditions for the PSVR to work properly is really finnicky.

Either way it's not great.

How is it going so far? I remember when Occulus and Vive launched Jeff kept complaining about the prices and how the games could have been done on the Wii or Wii u

When did he talk about games being done on Wii and the Wii U?

The only thing I have heard him reference is the types of games you are getting make it feel similar to the Wii games. By which he mean most games are mini games and/or very simple games that likely won't hold your interest for all that long.

As someone who owns a Vive I sort of agree with him. I haven't used my Vive in a while because the content that is out isn't all that engaging. There are neat things, but nothing that I really want to put a lot of time in or even buy yet because they are early access.

Agree.

Whatever is the issue must be adressed asap

Uh.. Well, you just pointed out one of the big problems with the Vive. I can't put it in my living room so I'm forced to put it in my basement.

Just as with any VR solution, there is an ideal.

I completely believe that Vive is the best tracking solution, but it's also the one with the strictest room requirements.

Anyway, I'm 5'9 so that helps, but I've hit the ceiling a few times.

The 6' ceiling is less a problem with the Vive, and more a problem with standing gameplay in general. The lighthouses only really need the height for sync. You can use the (stupidly long) sync cable to alleviate that problem. Not the most elegant solution, but one nonetheless.

Just catching up after getting home from work. Seems to be basically as expected.

The problem with VR right now is they could make the perfect headset (which this seems like it's not) but it still wouldn't matter when 95% of the software right now is garbage shovelware.

Yeah, it's weird to see people just painting this as a giant bomb issue. Seems pretty prevalent

Quoting myself from the Gamespot thread.
The issue isn't that it's completely broken, but that it's wildly inconsistent. Of course people are going to have good experiences with it, but that doesn't negate the negative ones

Does anyone have a list of the cheeses and wines they paired with each game? I want to prepare my own platter for when I get home, so I can get the full Giant Bomb experience.

Yup. It's enough to make me seriously consider canceling my preorder. Makes me sad.

Maybe they should have made a new camera.

Most of the guys have been doing this for a looooong time, it takes more than just "Ooooo Batman" to make them interested in something.

if just having a VR Batman game in your hands is all you need to get hyped regardless of quality, then good for you.

Agreed. Their pallet is just too refined for this riff raff.

They don't like games. They LOVE them.

Darn. Beat me to it.

I disagree. I've had more issues with my setup than the one we have at the studio where they're at least 9 ft up.

I lose tracking from time to time with my setup at home, but it's because of occulusion issues and such.

It's really unfortunate, but it could point to some environmental factors that may easily be addressed. It could be something as simple as pointing it away from a window or making sure there's no other bright source if light in the background. If people are having no issues, their set up might be able to be replicated.

The reaction to honest coverage of PSVR has been wholly predictable. If you are that defensive of your pre-orders, why are you even seeking impressions?

GB also getting the brunt of fanboy ire when at least 4 or 5 high profile outlets have also highlighted tracking issues.

I like my personalities from any media to have genuine enthusiasm. I'm not accusing other outlets of anything by that. But I know when Giant Bomb gets excited for something it's 100% genuine.

There are many things you could say to describe their output over the years since 2008, but boring is not a word I would use.

They absolutely have the funniest, most entertaining VR coverage out there. Without question.

They *want* VR to be good! Every platform! They don't want stuff they're looking forward to for so long, turn out to be underwhelming. That's no fun for anyone.

They can also take fair criticism without needing someone like me to defend them. I don't think a lot of the flak they've taken over this (primarily from people who haven't used the product for any extended period of time) is fair criticism. Some of it certainly could be, but I know they're just calling it like they see it and they definitely aren't wanting the thing to fail or going out of their way to sabotage setups. They're buds with like half the staff from PlayStation's San Francisco office for crying out loud! Jeff just went to John Drake's wedding!

Anyway, we're all big boys and girls on this forum. I don't want to tell anyone how to think about anything. The only page out of Giant Bomb's book I would want anyone to take is to just enjoy the things you enjoy. That's what they've been doing their whole existence. That's all I want to do! That's all anyone should want to do. Life's too short for the petty stuff :)

They get excited about things being bad :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-TIrS7ukyk

Be honest, was there anything in that stream that made you think "Wow, this is so much better than what the Vive can do."

If anyone thought that would be the case, they were setting themselves up for disappointment. Vive is a very different product with a very different price-point.

They are mostly getting questioned about the massive drifting they were having that most other sites haven't encountered. I am leaning toward this first batch having some defective units since something that bad would have appeared at many of the trade shows. The throbbing of the environment isn't something that could be ignored.

Yeah, but I'd also hope that would be something Sony would have rigouriously tested for and there would be messaging or instructions around it

Maybe there is, I haven't seen packaging or manuals or anything. Whatever the issue is I hope it's not unfixable.

Agreed, but that's what the GB crew has already experienced. The games that could excite you despite the PSVR's limitations are still embargoed.

So I don't know why people were expecting them to go crazy over the headset during this stream.

i wonder if it's interference with the magnetometer in the wands.

didn't watch much of this - were there tracking issues with the DS4?

You can't blame GB for being disappointed with the hardware. I mean, look at the stream. It made Jeff sick.

I think if there was no tracking issue, they would really like PSVR, since it has a lot of variety of games to offer on launch day and has Sony, as a game publisher behind the hardware.

No one should be expecting them to go crazy over it. Unlike the Gamespot stream which had tracking working as it should, Jeff's world was literally moving and shaking. That's a formula for just getting sick.

It is surprising how hard people are trying to act like they were going in to this planning on hating it when you can obviously the technical issues and they've been talking positively about PSVR for months.

Seriously I think anyone would be down on something that was making them physically sick to use. Hopefully they will have some new units before the next stream and can see if that helps.

Did you even bother to watch it?

The jitters are nothing like GB stream.

Even the vive have some jitters.

yes, yes i did, GS/GI too

as i said, having one big inaccurate tracking point is to blame, it cant track the controller/wand so relies on combining the single light with the gyros and that results in a lot of inaccuracy

I am assuming it's mostly people that don't follow them closely. There launch streams get a lot of more attention than their usual content.

Hoping one of the Sony guys on social can reach out to them, and give them another unit.

Clearly something was up with GB's setup, whether hardware or otherwise. There is no way anyone can see that and conclude, "yep, working as intended" when compared to other launch streams.

The ball is in Sony's court. Figure out what is happening. Get messaging on what it is and how to resolve it since it is clearly not isolated (busted hardware, here is how you swap, that sort of thing.)

You know.. basic product support shit.
