PSVR Review Thread

I liked the look of Rez and Driveclub VR. Funny reading all the posts on the video feed of Rez: "This is the best that they could come up with in VR?" Kids these days don't know a good game when they see one.

I don't want to spoil any more really. I'm going in with moderate expectations. I can't afford a Vive or Occulus, so this is really my best option I think.

Those YouTube comments on the Rez reveal trailer always get to me.

"couldn't they at least modernize the graphics"
 
Looks to me that many are picking appart the reviews to confirm things they already thought (confirmation bias at work), but considering that we are in 2016 and seeing a $499 VR solution that works, and works relatively well (depending visibly on surrounding conditions), on a $299 console is imo amazing.

Looking forward to trying this either this Xmas or next year depending on when I can persuade the spouse we need this..

Really enjoyed Gamestop stream. Cool guys those. And they seemed to enjoy the experiences, some more than others. Thumper looks amazing. But I guess I will wait and see what is the real cause of the tracking issues and if Sony is going to do anything about it.
 
Reviews seem overwhelmingly positive. Giant Bomb clearly have something not right, either faulty hardware or their studio setup, who knows. Yeah there's definitely tracking issues with the controllers but smaller glitch outs, but these are issues not big enough to detract from the overall experience since the controls work well the other 95% of the time. The GB issues seem like an outlier, yet folk are clamouring to pronounce PSVR as broken even though nearly every other review site has had great experiences for the most part.

I'm really hyped with what I'm hearing and can't wait to get mine. It's the future of racing games certainly, and I hope Dirt and maybe even F1 2016 can get PSVR support (apparently someone who works on Dirt heavily hinted that it is indeed gonna happen for that game). If so then my purchase of PSVR will be redeemed instantly, that is a massive game changer for me, racing sims in VR!

Super Hypercube, Tumbler and Thumper are like the kinds of games I can take or leave outside of VR but in VR I think they will be fantastic, can't wait to find out.
 
I think the ambiguous reviews (for some) are due to the fact that they're saying, basically: "PSVR is great, it's simply great, but right now there are no games that justify it by itself. So it's great if you want VR in itself, but is it enough at this price, for now". That's what the kinda funny guys are saying and they are probably right about it.

That's why people are seeing negative in those reviews. They're all saying "it's so great, but i'm not sure you should buy it"
 
Reviews are excellent on the hardware. Feels like software needs time to mature to justify the expense. Tossing my launch bundle back into the Amazon hopper. Best of luck to the early adopters.
 
I think something to take I to consideration regarding the software is that it seems most reviewers are simply going by what they have been given and not what is actually on offer to consumers day 1 so it's a little unfair to judge it solely on the reviews.

Not saying anything great has been left out but it's not the full picture.

This Eurogamer quote is on point. What in the world made them think this was a good idea? Why did they feel like they needed to roll the Pro out this year?

They already sold-out their launch PSVR stock; releasing Pro isn't gonna dampen the hype much.

It's 2 different products, aimed at different consumers.

Sure, and I hope those issues get resolved, but I don't think the people who are having connectivity issues should be ignored or dismissed just because other people are having almost flawless experiences

It will be really interesting to see what happens when it hits consumers who aren't using these systems in open studio areas

I hope like hell Sony is prepared for when a portion of headset owners need a new one due to the tracking problems.

Thanks for this, it was a pretty good read. After going through the section on setting up the tracking system and how the instructions aren't that much help in that regard, I'm convinced Giant Bomb hasn't set it up correctly.

Understandable. This has kind of been the story of VR thus far. Tons of cool experiences but not much in the way of games with depth. A weird trend in the VR PC headsets has been 3rd person action games where you are the camera. These have generally been the deepest games but also kind of miss the point of VR IMO. Having said that, I find the PSVR launch lineup pretty interesting.

Yup, Sony did a great job with PSVR. Hope they get rewarded with good sales.
 
So going through the reviews, so far GB had the most issues, followed by Kotaku. Polygon also had tracking issues, but they really liked the headset overall.

I know Dan on stream the PSVR is getting mixed reviews, but I am seeing mostly positive things for what you pay. I think there is confirmation bias on both sides. I hope these issues can be resolved, getting sick is probably the worst thing.
 
I'm sold. I just need a few games to take home with it. I'm hoping rigs and driveclub will be my new destruction derby and wipeout.
 
It's obvious people just want this thing to fail because it's not as good as the pc version or because it's exclusive to Sony. Vr solution on a weak cheapish console seems pretty reasonable. I personally have no interest in vr in its current state.
 
'If you don't already own a PS4 then the question becomes a bit more tricky.

At present, I don't think PSVR should be your sole reason for getting the games console. Get one because it's got some great games and multimedia apps - VR will come down in price over time and there will be better games as well.

What the PSVR does do is give Microsoft's Xbox a tonne of work to do in swaying people who are undecided.

Lastly, if you're kind of interested in VR but not sure about making the jump, I'd recommend getting one of Google's Cardboard viewers for a tenner or so. It's nothing like as advanced as the PSVR but it'll give you a bit of a taster of what I've been talking about.

What's not in doubt is that virtual reality has arrived in a big way. And Sony's PlayStation currently offers the most attractive deal to be had when it comes to picking up a headset.'

I hope you're being sarcastic... Why would they want it to fail ? At least Brad and Dan said this is the headset they were most likely going to buy, for months.

Even though I have a vive and a PC many times more powerful than a ps4, I want psvr to be good because it is going to be how most people experience "real" vr for the first time. If people walk away impressed, then vr will be more popular and more games will be made.

I was planning on buying one for the hell of it but the tracking issues and/or defects are worrying.

Not everyone who sees the negativity is out to take sony down a peg

People are losing their shit for many reasons with this launch. I'm going to pick up a PSVR but it's funny watching people get hyper-defensive. People were down on Vive too (even more so with the price, games, etc.) but it didn't stop me from buying one in April and loving it. Just buy what you want.
 
If a thing doesn't get some negative attention, it's probably not getting much attention at all. The detractors - both the legitimately dissatisfied ones as well as the ideologically motivated ones - are a natural part of the buzz.

I'm optimistic for a reason. In the kinda funny review they compare it to the Vita, saying will it be abandoned and people will regret it after 6 month. But i think there is a major difference here. Devs, creators everywhere, will be curious about developing for VR, while there is no real reason to dev for a Vita, except for economic reasons, and that's where the problem is. But VR ? How can you be a game maker and not want to experiment with it i mean.. Great things will come, if it sells good enough.

Which makes giving a piece of hardware a review score really weird to me.

It's like giving the PS4/X1 a review score on launch day "only launch games here, nothing really amaze us yet."

As it should, it's an incredibly stupid comment to make. :P

But I've been in this thread since it came out and while there have been those (including myself) worried about the potential for faulty systems, or those that think that the reviews don't look too good (I think they look fine), no one has outright said that they want PSVR to die or even hinted at it.

It's asinine and I have no idea why people are playing the victims.
 
Wait are the tracking issues with the headset or the wands? The wands tracking is garbage on the old pseye so that wouldn't surprise me, but all I care about is the headset.
 
I'm trying to decide if there's any reason to get move controllers. Do a lot of games support them? Could I get away with just getting one or do I need 2?

Also why does Giantbomb has to hate 90% of everything game related now? I'm sure they have their reasons, but I miss times when they were excited about stuff :)
