CohhCarnage (twitch-streamer) notes that Mafia III PC is locked to 30 fps

What an absolutely baffling decision. I was looking forward to this game and might still get it but I'm seriously thinking about it now when it was a no brainer before. I really don't want to support shit like this.

Probably a design choice. Why bother about 60 fps if PS4 and Xbox One can only run the game at 30 fps?

But still lame.

That's the case for most multiplat games these days TBH, but it's still incredibly rare for AAA PC releases to be locked to 30. The only "logical" theory I've heard for this is the facial animations require a cap. Still bad design if true.

Probably a design choice.

Hey lets purposefully have a scientifically and mathematically inferior frame rate that affect the gameplay because "design choice".

Stop giving developers bullshit excuses on their behalf to not have 60FPS. It's 2K16 for crying out loud.

I mm waiting to play this then. This will get patched or someone will find a workaround by Monday. Save us Durante.

I feel sorry for anyone who pre-ordered this outside of Steam and probably can't get a refund or cancel the order (guess keys have been sent out for preloading).

- Mafia 1 (2002) - Capped at 63fps, widescreen resolutions have stretched UI - acceptable considering this was far before widescreen was standard like many games of its time

- Mafia 2 (2010) - Unlocked 120fps+, full arbitrary resolution support / 21:9 / multi-montior etc etc

- Mafia 3 (2016) - Crapped at 30fps..............

Sheesh, I did not realize it was that big of a deal. I could see why this would be annoying if you have a powerful set up and what not, but not "fuck off 2K" worthy. Learn something new everyday.

The person that claims they get sick from 30fps is just ridiculous though.

Mafia 1 2002 > Dev doing its job

Mafia 2 2010 > Dev doing its job +

Mafia 3 2016 > Lazy dev not doing its job

It's as real a thing as FOV issues.

Considering it takes around a week to get your money back in my experience, I would recommend just not giving it to them in the first place

Definitely not true from every time I have used it.

Takes anywhere between 2hrs to 10hrs for a response once submitted. Steam Wallet funds are held in a pending state for 24hrs. Same is true for cards at which point they are returned to the account; for me that has been within 2 days

Did i ever mention VR? That's and entirely different conversation.

Dude. Read again what I wrote. It was an example on why using blanket statements is no good. Some people get motion sick with VR, some people can't physically tolerate 30 FPS after a while (as it my case). The same principle applies: even if it's fine for millions of people, you measure your experience with the game by what you get from it, not going by the consensus. You decide your gaming purchases based on your preferences, not by what the rest of the world considers "playable" or "unplayable".

But whatever. You've doubled-down on your opinion, so no matter what I counter-argue, you won't change your mind. Same applies here:

The person that claims they get sick from 30fps is just ridiculous though.

Tell me how me having to stop playing Bloodborne due to a splitting headache, even though I was enjoying it, is ridiculous.

Yikes. Glad I didn't pre-order this game. Thanks, but no, thanks.

Never pre-order anything, actually.

Took 4 days for me last time.

So a steam forum post is saying CohhCarnage stated that the 30fps lock is for the review copy only and not retail. Can anyone else confirm?

Last 2 refunds I have done have taken 7 full days to get the money back in my checking account. Steam wallet is understandably faster.

NZ and Australia get to play PC version in 5-ish minutes + day 1 patch, we should have info soon.

Edit: My bad. Apparently <=2 hours is "In 1h" in Steam where <=1h is "Less than 1h". Confusing as shit.

Glad I didn't pre order. Was definitely looking forward to this game, but not until that 30fps bullshit gets fixed. It's ok though, gears and bf1 are right around the corner so I'm in no rush.

So did any of the early footage streamers have this on PC (not the ones that got it today, but a few weeks ago for a handful of hours)? If so, screw those people for not mentioning this.

It DOES seem weird they'd even hand out PC copies for streamers / reviewers on PC at all now though since all it would do is invite bad press.

Wow, this is the first thing I've read that's honestly concerned me about Mafia 3. I suppose I won't be buying it as soon as I had planned. Here's to hoping they unlock it via patch or someone mods it. It's really strange when devs cap FPS on PC (especially nowadays), I mean, a lot of players are constantly upgrading their rigs to get the most out of their experience. I feel like capping FPS just negates all of that and is a pretty large middle finger to the PC player base. Ugh, boo. :(

30 FPS feels like ass with a mouse. It's unresponsive. Even with a gamepad, you can feel the difference at 60 vs 30 FPS, nevermind see it.

And that's another thing at 60 FPS there is more temporal information that your eyes are picking up, making the image seme more detailed, movement smoother, etc.

ALso, I personally can't stand the judder of panning the camera at 30 FPS. It's not as bad as judder in movies at the theater running at 24 FPS, but it's not good.

Shit. So it's confirmed then. I thought the streamer was probably wrong, guess not.

I'm stuck with the PC version now. This isn't good at all really, and no PC game should be locked to 30 FPS. I play a lot of games on console and am perfectly happy with 30 there, but 30 ain't the reason you drop a load of cash on a nice PC. I guess we know the reason for the late reviews now though.

I think the story and era and music of this game are going to entertain me plenty and I guess my cheap PC version is still gonna look a lot better than a PS4 version even with locked 30. But nope, unleash the hounds NeoGAF - they fucked up.
