NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

So I'm going to bite the bullet and send off my Lagrange Point to be translated. I also ordered a second copy just to keep untranslated. Do I have issues? All signs point to yes.

Nah, this is something I could easily do as well
does that mean I have issues?

Go for it! Issues? What issues? We all have issues. We spend big bucks for what amounts to 20-30 year old video games!

Lol thats what I did, I have a loose translated copy and a CIB copy that is original. So you may have issues but you certainly won't be alone :)

Ahaha, thanks, that makes me feel better. I think this will be the only time I do this however. I don't feel right about having say, Recca, Gimmick or Little Samson replica carts or something like that since I own an Everdrive already.

Random hardware porn! This FDS Ram Adapter just came in the mail today:

What would be a good price to buy SMB USA and 3 on Famicom boxed in nice condition? I'm thinking of buying on EBay, not having been up on NES and Famicom prices not sure if I'd be way over paying or not.

USA - US $48
3 - US $40

That's overpaying. Halve those prices, or even lower if you're patient and wait for auctions instead of buy-it-now listings.

And WTF my Castlevania cart works perfectly in my famiclones? So it's some weird incompatibility. Yet I've tried in an original NTSC NES and an AV Famicom. Might try one of my original Famicoms too.

I was a bit surprised that the insane prices for Duck Tales 2 actually went down. I got a copy in a very good condition with manual for 36,50€, a few years back when I was last looking for Duck Tales 2 (being the NES version with different level layout of my first game ever), just the module would regularly go for 100€+. Is this common right now for NES games to lose some of their value again? It's great for collectors of course, but I was surprised, I always suspected prices would only go up with defects lowering the amount of games potentially on offer.

Here in Norway, Nes prices seems to be collapsing because many senior collectors are completing their sets and either retiring from the scene, or even selling off all their stuff. A game like Gimmick for instance, is now going for way lower prices than it used to, the same goes for Little Samson and other grails.

This happened with Atari games. The bulk of people that would ever be interested in those games got pretty much everything they ever wanted, and some sold off. Those that were hoarding or only in for reselling left and prices eased off.

The thing with NES that's a bit more of a wrinkle is that the games hold up a lot better than Atari stuff. It's not unreasonable to think that there could be a lot of new people wanting to set up their own NES library. But maybe games like Duck Tales just don't have the same appeal to a 20 year old that it does to a 30 year old due to it being a late-80s cartoon.

what's considered low for Gimmick?

Yeah, I generally agree, since I have little interest in atari stuff myself, but freaking love the Nes. But who knows what younger people think. I tend to think there is a higher chance they would want to recreate their own childhood than ours, which is why Gamecube etc is on the rise. Will be interesting to see what kind of impact the NES Mini will have, if that sparks interest in collecting real carts once again.

Right now there is bidding on one at a local site here, and its at about €300. It fetched twice that not too long ago.

Yeah in Sweden a cart used to be about between €400-€500 for a while. Now it's on its way down. I thought of selling my cart and get a complete Famicom copy instead for a while but never did.

You should, the Famicom-carts run at 60hz and are still cheaper. This is what I did a few years ago.

I was thinking of getting a CIB Famicom version though, since at the time you could sell an SCN-cart for about the same as a CIB FC version cost. That's no longer true though I don't think, which I kick myself over. But yeah I really want it in 60hz on my Famicom so I might just get a cart.

Doesn't it also have extra audio channels? Or is it just that 60hz plays it right.
The FC version does have extra audio yes. But as sixteen-bit pointed out you need an actual Famicom to be able to hear it, or a modded NTSC NES.

Complete has gone up a lot unfortunately. I am only collecting famicom-carts really, i think they look good enough without the boxes. But yeah, get rid of that scn-game before the scn-market crashes completely is my advice. The obsession with scn-markings here was always stupid anyways imo.

Yup and from looking at the people in the collecting circles around me, it seems more and more collectors have seen the 60hz light and started to prefer NTSC over PAL here as well.

Yeah, just compare the prices on NA Little Samson to the falling Pal-prices. The collectors that just want to own it are falling away, while the collectors who also wants to play their games are staying - and thus increasing demand and prices for the superior versions.

I wish they'd all drop -- I'd love to own Little Samson but I almost certainly never will at its current price.

Ok finally able to play Castlevania tonight. Excited, cos it's my first time joining the NES/Famicom game club.

Decided to go with the FDS version as that's the version I've never played. Played the western version many times while growing up with one of those multi game pirate famiclone carts, and later, many times on emulator. Heck this is the first time I'm playing an 8-bit Castlevania on real hardware in more than twenty years I think!

The music's as glorious as I remember it and the graphics are just beautifully detailed. Crazy to think that the developers will actually top this graphical fidelity later with CV3.

Funny thing about the controls. I hated it as a kid. Coming from SMB, Simon controls super stiff and this lack of agility turned me off a lot of times. Yet I always kept playing and I don't even know why. Now that I'm an adult, I can appreciate the limited yet tight controls much better. In fact, in this recent playthrough, I actually found myself thinking how well Simon controlled. Funny how a few decades can change your thinking! Heh

I managed to play until the middle of stage 2 where I got severely owned by the medusa heads. I'm not as good as I used to be plus it's late at night and quickly got a game over after inkept being pushed over the ledges. Great thing about the FDS version is at least you can save. I'm coming back to this when I'm fully rested. I'm pretty sure I can do much better next time!

So if you guys wants a game you can beat in 30 minutes, check out Little Mermaid by Capcom. I had high hopes for it, considering it came out around the same time as Darkwing Duck, but man, this game was just boring and way too easy. The only interesting challenge in the game were the boss fights, and even they were pretty easy. So, guess I dont at all recommend this:

At least the excellent chiptune rendition of "Under the Sea" made me check out the so nostalgic original song. I remember going to see this at cinema with my dad in 89, probably my second or third trip to the cinema ever.

bah, my copy of Castlevania finally showed up...and of course it throws a solid white screen on the NES (no flashing red light). I opened it, cleaned it, and still no go. All my other games boot right up. 72 pin was replaced about a year ago and I've had no other issues. I see on some of the cart pins toward the board it almost looks like the pin material eroded; probably get to start a return. Good times.

Sounds like a great game to play with my now three-year-old daughter when she gets a little older and can find her way around a controller. She already loves this movie and she likes watching "Daddy's old games."

Yeah, its probably decent for kids, although some of the controls are probably more complicated than they should be. But if she loves the movie, she will definitely love this game. Its also nice with an old game that has a female protagonist, that doesnt happen often.

To be fair, Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers can similarly be finished in 30 minutes, give or take.

That being said, The Little Mermaid is definitely on my shortlist of NES carts to pick up...I'd like to wrap up the complete Capcom Disney NES library. (Except for Ducktales 2 and Chip & Dale 2 because hahahahahaha fuck that.)

Edit: Also why do those colors look so...garish?

Edit 2: I just had a wacky idea of bringing a Little Mermaid NES cart along on my next Disney parks trip to have Ariel sign. Hah.

Is anyone else having difficulty signing up for NintendoAge? I was looking forward to using the Scoreboard system whenever I get around to picking up a AVS but I registered for an account about a month ago and never got an activation e-mail.

Is it NeoGAF levels of difficult to get in or something?

I think I've pretty much managed to wrap up my Capcom/Disney NES collection now. Just need Talespin and Darkwing Duck for the set. I was lucky to get RR2 quite a while back before it got really expensive, but the original (Famicom) release of Rescue Rangers was a nightmare to get my hands on.

I think it was just a regular type of registration when I signed up with an activation email coming a minute or two after. That was a few years ago, so they could have changed it I guess.

The colors are garish because my Famicom is modded for three different palettes, check out this video.. I often change it around a bit for fun.

Its true what you say about Chip&Dale, but i stil feel that game has a bit more interesting level design to it, and the box-mechanic and two player makes it fun. Guess it helps that i liked the show back in the day, and have nostalgia for the game as well. I just need Talespin now to finish up my Capcom Nes-collection!

Anyways, ended up completing another game:

Flintstones: Rescue of Dino and Hoppy was much better than Little Mermaid, and atually took me almost two hours to complete. The level design had much more thought put into them, with lots of secrets and optional items and such, and the challenge was also pretty decent for a game of this type. I also really liked the world map and the stupid basketball mini-game It does have some flaws though, for instance there is a terrible kick back when you get hit, and with many intense plattforming sections, this is what is going to kill you by far the most - and its just as annoying here as in Castlevania. The bosses, while fun, are also more or less all about mashing attack and hope they goes down before you go, you are to slow to move and turn for it to be much to gain by playing strategically on them. Which brings me to my last point, your character (Fred) just moves and turns too slow. This game would have been much more fun with a Turbo-edition (Capcom, where are you?). Anyways, all in all a decent game, that is worth owning. Guess its on to Surprise at Dinosaur Peak next?

I completed Chip n Dale for the first time last night. I only got it a few months ago and have just played it once before. It's a great game, lots of fun and one that seems great for a quick play through every now and then. Love the last level music.

Congrats! I definitely agree that its a great game. Even more fun in mp when you alternate by cooperating and trolling each other :)

I actually tried it with my mum, I thought it would be fun since we used to play NES and SNES games a lot together when I was a kid. It was rather hectic :P Fun though!

Just spent the past 90 minutes replacing the pin connector on my girlfriend's NES as it was bust and wanting to fix it up as little anniversary gift. Had a bit of a panic with the bottom shielding not lining up for some reason but got there in the end!

Also folk weren't kidding about them clamping down on the carts. Scared to try take the thing out!

But woo! Working NES!

My Castlevania cart opened up (posted about it not working a few posts up). Listing advertised pins as "great." Hmm...

This is after I cleaned them with rubbing alcohol. It looks like eraser and elbow grease time; not sure that's going to do it though.

Lol that estate sale has been doing the rounds of every retro game site on the net. A whole bunch of nerds are going to show up now.
