NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Anyone know who actually composed for Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti?

The credits say Anna Puruna, but that sounds like a Castlevania 1 / usual old school JP credits psudonym.

I bought a boxed copy of Castlevania III from Amazon US (I'm in the UK) 2-3 weeks ago, and yesterday I picked it up from the Post Office because I had to pay import tax. When I opened it I saw it was just a loose cartridge (though I could tell that before opening it) and they had put a note in asking me to contact them, so I sent then an email. They replied with this;

Yeah it said it had the original box but I incorrectly listed it. What would you like me to do?

I'm not really sure what to say, as that seems like the kind of question that would/should have been said before sending it. I'm terrible at this kind of stuff, I don't want to be rude.

Basically, this guy is trying to pull a fast one as he figured that the inconvenience of shipping the item back will cause you to give him a break.

What you ask for depends on your preferred outcome: If you really want a boxed copy of Castlevania 3 still, and a cart only version just isn't good enough, tell them you'd like a full refund, including postage back as the item was knowingly shipped not matching its description. I mean, he even put a note in there!

If you're okay with a cart only copy, look up some SOLD eBay listings to get an idea of the going rate of a cart only copy, then ask for a refund bringing your price down below that number.

You say you're not good at this kind of stuff and you don't want to be rude, but don't forget this guy is basically trying to scam you now. You don't have to feel bad demanding that you not get f-ed over.

This x100. If you let him off easily he'll just go and scam someone else next. I don't know what kind of system Amazon uses but if it was something like eBay you could get a refund easy.

Even if a cart only copy was enough for me I would ask for a refund/return just for the principle.

Yeah I would tell him to go to hell on principle. Deliberately misled. Get a full refund including all return postage and any tax, it's a scam.

Definitely get a 100% refund, this guy is a scumbag and doesnt deserve any politeness.

In other news, I just defeated this awesome game, Adventures of Lolo 2:

I must say I am really impressed with this series so far. While the first game was pretty easy and straightforward, this second game was insanely hard from around the half-way point, and i actually ended up using a faq on two levels (embarrassing, I know). There are not that many mechanics, but they manage to create an impressive amount of different levels with what they have. So since the game is hard, I have spent several weeks playing it on and off, turning off the console and thinking for some days before coming back to a challenge and beating it. Something that just feels so good. Anyways, i think this is the probably the best game of its type that I have played, so its definitely recommended if you like the genre!

Now time to pick up Lolo 3 I guess.

Awesome work beating Lolo 2 Morefo. Those games are too much for me haha I just get frustrated.

We've got a few days before November so we have time to pick a game.

But we also still need to figure out how we're going to do this voting thing going forward.

I know we talked about changing it so we pick several months games at once so people have a chance to buy them and get the on time. Do we want to vote three months in, four times a year? Sounds like it's the easiest solution but I'm up for suggestions.

Then we need to decide how nominations work. Do we nominate fifteen games, one per member, and the top three vote getters get in?

Thanks OnPoint!

I think I suggested we vote a month in advance instead of quaterly last time we talked about this:

Im fine with changing the system somewhat. But what if we always decide two months in advance, so say we now vote and decide for october, then when its time for the september vote, we decide for november etc. That should help improve things, and keep the voting process (which is fun in its own right) a monthly thing.

So basically, now we need to do two votes (or only one where the top 2 becomes the club games for the next two months), but then in november, we vote for january, in december we vote for february etc. How does that sound?

I guess this al depend also on how many people are interested to participate. Have been going slow since the summer it seems.

That's not a bad suggestion.

It has been slower, but also, I've admittedly been bad about getting it all up on time. So that doesn't help.

I guess I'll throw a thing together for Nov/Dec, and then part way through November we'll do the January vote, then go two months out from here on.

Cool! And also, while I do love your great voting posts with pictures and descriptions, remember you dont have to always do that if you dont have time, and as long as i get a quick course in creating polls, i and probably others as well, can probably also alternate on doing this.

Anyways, I guess this means its time to start nominating?

Yeah, the pictures are fun but man are they time consuming haha

Let's open the nominations now. We'll nominate 10 games, and the first 10 valid nominations will be placed in the poll. The top vote getter will be for November and the second place winner will be for December.

Sounds like a plan. No worries about pictues if you are crunched for time. Theme?

I guess the closest we have for a theme is "Stuff we haven't played that's under $30 a cart" haha

Did we ever do Crystalis? If not, Im nominating it. If we did, Id like to nominate Metal Gear.

Consider it done!

Jackal!

Also Turtles 1 up for nomination again!

Also also, I probably sound like a broken record here since I'm not in America, but how about a Famicom game? There are many good Famicom games well under $30 including worldwide postage for you import fearing yanks ;)

Just looking at my collection - The Goonies, Twinbee, King Kong 2, Maze of Gallious, Ganbare Goemon, Getsu Fumaden... I won't even push my luck and suggest any of the FDS classics ;)

Yeah, relatively cheap games that are not yet done is the theme we are going for :)

Edit: I am so ready for us to include Famicom-games in this. Need a reason to play Getsu Fumaden soon!

Edit 2: And about those FDS-games, here is todays pickup for me:

Lessee... what abouuut... Wurm: Journey to the Center of the Earth?

I also agree about including Famicom games! So many I can recommend! :)

I absolutely love WURM.

I'll nominate something a bit different: SHADOWGATE. Still quite cheap, but man is it fun, especially if you've never played it before.

I nominate Startropics 2. Very underrated. More playable than the first because the controls are less awkward. It always annoyed me in the first that you couldn't move while jumping.

If that's not popular enough, I'll second Shadowgate.

RE: Famicom games being included. Let's wait and take stock of who can and can't play them on actual hardware. It's possible, but I just don't want to exclude anyone.

We need five more, let's keep 'em coming! I wanna open voting ASAP, tonight or tomorrow if possible.

Abadox.

EDIT: Is Startropics 2 a direct story sequel to 1? Because if that wins...we should probably play it once.

It is, we can but it's not that important as far as I can remember. Startropics 1 all takes place on one island. Startropics 2 has you going through time periods by yourself helping out Sherlock Holmes, talking to Dracula, etc.. So most of it has very little to do with the first game. It was just fun to see the different time periods and it had a sense of humor.

I remember Startropics 1 being very hard and frustrating. At least it was I was a kid. I don't know, maybe I was just bad at it.

I wouldn't want people to give up before they made it to 2.

Is Tetris too obvious a game to pick (or been done ad nauseum)? Been enjoying it lots on the AVS lately. I have been thinking about starting Crystalis though; haven't played it since the Game Boy Color version ages ago.

We need just one more!

November/December 2016 Nominations
1. Crystalis
2. Jackal
3. Startropics 2
4. WURM
5. Shadowgate
6. Deja Vu
7. Abadox
8. Rollergames
9. Tetris (Nintendo)

King Kong 2 + Fami to NES converter = <US$20 including delivery worldwide

Perhaps it's something we'll explore for January. I still wanna take actual stock of our members before making the jump :) For what it's worth I already own KK2 lol

Star Tropics is crazy hard at the end yeah. That last level gave me nightmares when i played it. Pretty fun game though, all in all. I really like just the look of it when you explore the islands, which is in stark contrast to the look of the dungeons which got kinda tedious.

Btw, with so many nominees getting used now, should we have a month cooldown or just make an exception this time and be able to nominate them again for next voting?

We still need one more. Don't make me nominate! I mean, it's really no big deal if I have to lol

I thought we already had a month cooldown on nominees but I could be wrong. I don't dislike it as a rule. That said, we'll be back to five per vote next month.

Bionic Commando? My brother has been obsessed with that game lately, lol.

And I haven't tried Tengen Tetris, RoryDropkick, but have heard less than favourable things.

Game is like 40-50+ bucks cart only minimum, it's prices are getting worse now.

That's too bad. The PAL-B versions are still pretty cheap, though. I guess the US version prices started reflecting the quality of the game, it was for the longest time one of the best quality-for-price type of games.
