The NX Prediction / BSpeculation / Fanxiety Thread

Marketing, price, and software IMO.

Imo too, with price being basically the memory cards. It suffered the agony of WiiU, basically with the poor way of marketing the idea, price and lack of software support from first and specially third parties.

Let me guess. Marketing?
Lack of worthwhile exclusives that could convince people to buy a $250 system. An incredibly narrow range of games that pretty much only includes the same indies you can get anywhere and niche jrpgs. Stiff competition from 3DS and mobile. Overly expensive proprietary memory cards

It's time for President K to shine.

Do you honestly believe the only reason Wii U failed was due to marketing? That if they marketed it better, then it would have succeeded.

If that is true, wouldn't it be impossible to market an NX that looks like a Wii U controller?

Yes.

And no it wouldn't be impossible. It is the reason why branding will change and the product will be differentiated from anything Nintendo has done before even if it was identical to the Wii U with just a more powerful console.

How hard will this thing be to market if it looks like a Wii U and is priced at $299, and as a handheld device that is underpowered than an Xbox One and won't receive AAA ports or support.

That learns none of the lessons of why the Wii U failed. It just repeats them.
I think having access to major engines like unreal 4 is far more important than third party support than just "equivalent power"

Man, if you think the NX is only going to be a PS4 / XBO-style home console, you haven't been paying attention to how Nintendo has done business for the last ten years.

Imo too, with price being basically the memory cards. It suffered the agony of WiiU, basically with the poor way of marketing the idea, price and lack of software support from first and specially third parties.

II actually do think that the Wii U's biggest problem was probably its tablet controller, though (but that also ties into its price and lack of compelling software). However I think the fact that the tablet itself is the console and becomes portable potentially solves that issue with the NX.

In Emily I trust.

OMFG, its really happening. Seriously at this point I just wanna know the launch games to fully figure out my spending schedule. And please reveal the system rpice at the reveal because I really REALLY meed to know it.

I hope for a Splatoon 2 near launch. Should be doable to they start small again.

Smash 5 with new characters have been heavily rumored so I expect that, tho probably not at launch.

As for multiplatform games, I hope Persona 5, Overwatch, For Honor, and/or Rocket League come.

Also since this is a combining of handheld/home and doesn't really have any gimmicks, theres no typical packin gimmick they can do, so I kinda expect Animal Crossing to be a packin but who knows. (if its ready) Seems like a great overall game to packin.

Just my two cents, but I don't think AC has wide enough potential appeal outside of inclusion in a mini-game compilation a la Nintendo Land to merit pack-in status. It offers simulation gameplay which wide seats if gamers are usually disinterested in. I wouldn't be surprised to see it at or soon after launch. Hmm... Perhaps it could be a pack-in if many different bundles were offered, as IIRC we saw with GBA, though maybe that was ay the retailer level only.

Will never understand how people memed him up and rallied behind him as if he were like Iwata

Dude has been a lackluster CEO so far. Lack of communication imo is largely impart because of Kimishima.

People will meme up anything related to Nintendo in an era where Nintendo directs exists making their execs more personable and things like Twitter and upvote/downvote-based content aggregators reward memetic image-based content with a lot of attention.

This some real research shit right here.

lol I had some free time to spare as you can see.

anyway it's done

now I can watch as we all melt in this hype pot into oblivion.

if this time is for real, GAF is going to crash sooo hard.

We don't know what the NX gimmick is (despite rumors giving us a clear idea what it could be, it could be something else). Animal Crossing is a perfect game to show how communication and on the go gameplay could work and intergrate into its product.

But I agree it is a hard sell for some, so most likely not the case.

I doubt Animal Crossing is a launch title, but it needs to be year 1. That is the type of game that should last the duration of the console and get add-ons released once every year or so.

Splatoon is more important than Animal Crossing, but I could see AC first only because of the new Animal Crossing mobile game that's releasing next year.

Franchise total (as of June 30, 2016) 31.28 million units sold in the franchise.

but amibo festival tarnished the IP, at least to some extent,

people will "wait and see" this time around. nintendo can't risk any further damage to the brand so maybe theyll wait til they have something truly remarkable to show.

Great ready for meltdowns. The Eurogamer and Emily rumors are wrong. SuperMetalDave64 is correct.

The Eurogamer rumor looks like Wii U 2 and mimics existing, failed products. This thing will be a console and it will compete in the XBox One/PS4 in terms of power so they can get AAA ports.

It is like 3 years into the generation. It should be simple for Nintendo to create a console at $199 that can produce Xbox One and PS4 level images.

Oh, god. It started.

I really don't think amiibo festival tarnished the ip, given it's a blatant low budget spinoff title

Yes.

And no it wouldn't be impossible. It is the reason why branding will change and the product will be differentiated from anything Nintendo has done before even if it was identical to the Wii U with just a more powerful console.

The Wii U failed for multiple reasons that can't just be boiled down to bad marketing. There was also the lack of parity with other consoles in terms of power, terrible third party support, subpar first party support, poor online infrastructure, an unproven tablet gimmick, an expensive launch price, and on a deeper level the machine itself had no target audience. The product was designed with the intention of winning over the casual crowd and the hardcore gamer crowd and failed at getting either.

The NX doesn't just need good marketing. It has to be a fundamentally appealing product. The Wii U was not that.

Guys, what if the NX reveal is just a mirror because WE'RE ALL THE NX.

I can't keep checking gaf every 5 minutes this week damnit. I got too much work.

Man people are really underestimating the appeal of Animal Crossing.

I mean if the gimmick Nintendo has with NX is related to some social aspect, then I can seeing it being really big with Animal Crossing.

so 3 more hours til they drop the gigaton?

Possibly yes, but again they could also announce tomorrow or the day after

I just think getting all this info at once makes it seem more like it is coming sooner than expected

Finally happening!

The first WiiU advertisment. Remember the negative reactions. Kinda got me hyped up for my Wiiu though
https://youtu.be/TVmW_qM1mmg

Really cant wait for what it is, so close!

This was a disgusting commercial. Especially in comparison to Wii's "Wii would like to play"

smh

Warriors blew a 3-1 lead

Lmao

Man, watching all these old Wii U videos and the sheer emphasis they place on the controller at the expense of everything else...Really can't blame the people who thought it was just a $300 Wii controller.

Not helped by the NSMBU footage where the other players have Wiimotes.

Man, if you think the NX is only going to be a PS4 / XBO-style home console, you haven't been paying attention to how Nintendo has done business for the last ten years.

Ssst, don't let details as sales figures, market share and demographics kill the fantasies yet. Let the reveal do that, it's way more interesting.

NX will be a powerful console with a tablet on top and cheap. And will have all the third party ports. Guaranteed. #AMDKenBone

Is this it, guys? I know I shouldn't get hyped, but I can't help it.

I can't wait to see what the NX actually is, but I think I'm even more hyped about the reactions here. I'm sure Nintendo will come up with something weird again and Gaf will be hilarious for weeks! :)

Eurogamer said the 3DS would use a Tegra chip. We have seen this before.

It did use Tegra, though. As a placeholder. The info when they had it was correct.

I think its quite a given, having a new portable thing that can take advantage of the recent push with Pokemon Go to sell more units with the game.

By the way, i'm hoping to at least see the real name of the machine in this annoucement of tomorrow.

I would expect if tomorrow is an announcement of an announcement, it might not include anything but the vaguest teaser.

Wack in a prerecorded message from Iwata which he talks about the NX and what it can do like a giddy school child then honour what he has done for the company by picking such a date?

I'll tear up if there is such a message.

At this point, it's not only the EG leak, but also several others of repute saying this is what the system will be, including WSJ. I see what you mean about the mock-up looking like a Wii U, vut I expect in reality they will make it look more distinguishable from that product, and more clearly a take-it-anywhere handheld that also plugs into the TV than the half measure of the Wii U (the rumored marketing noted by EG will also help with this, it sounds like they have a good hook for it). The detachable controllers will also differentiate it visually. Plus, most people don't know what a Wii U is or what it looks like. Finally, if you expect NX to be a straight console, when kind of successor do you expect 3DS to get?

absolutely,

there's an announcement of a reveal and the event itself in the form of a direct, most likely.

no way they go like "whoops! there's this thing we have been developing for years, here, have some pics and infos".

Eurogamer said the 3DS would use a Tegra chip. We have seen this before.

Well, it was slated to in the original incarnation.

Great ready for meltdowns. The Eurogamer and Emily rumors are wrong. SuperMetalDave64 is correct.

Oh dear. None of that is realistic (neither in terms of pricing or what you expect of ports - which have almost nothing to do with power). Looks like your meltdown is incoming :(

There are so many more games that use different engines these days. Unreal isn't the ubiquitous engine that it used to be.

I.. what... Oh yeah you're the dude from those PC threads. Never mind. Lol

It could very well be the MH. The successor to the 3DS that plays most or all of the NX games. We know they are going for a unified system like iOS.
