Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

Really?

In the 12 years I've owned DS systems I've never had that problem, let alone heard of anyone else having that problem. Maybe on the New 3DS systems, but never the old ones.
It's happened to me a few times. It's definitely uncommon, but it also sucks a lot since if you happen to be playing the game and have it suspended you'll lose progress. I'm all for a cart cover, especially since the Switch is big enough that it'll need to be in a bag.

Hopefully the design will be refined before it's final release. Because as of right now, it looks pretty damn ugly imo. But it's a pretty cool concept, and I'm happy to finally see what it'll be like in action. My only big concern would be battery life. If you aren't able to get at least 3-4 hrs out of this thing on the go, then it won't be a very good handheld console.

Yeah, I really like what they've shown today. Cool hybrid concept with a lot of options, sleek system that looks modern and attractive, new Mario and Zelda games combined with a lot of enhanced WiiU ports and seemingly better 3rd party support. Gotta get used to the name, but it's probably a good one.

This concept makes a lot of sense imo, hope it works out for Nintendo; I really want them to stick around as one of the "big three", making dedicated hardware and pushing the industry forward with new ideas. Day 1 for me.

People are already hailing this as an immediate success that will sell loads?
Wtf guys, you've only seen a three minute video. Don't be desperate.

We need to see so much more before anyone can make a shout like that and not look like an idiot.

Why? The general buying public is much more likely to make purchasing decisions on the former rather than doing massive research.

As a recent thread was closed, and there seems to be a notion that Nintendo are releasing two bundles. The dock on it's own, and a deluxe version with dock and handheld element.

The handheld component contains the "brains" of the console, i.e the Nvidia soc. All the dock does is act as an output to a bigger screen.

So the dock by itself is nothing more than a gloridifed hdmi and usb port.

There's NO WAY Nintendo have an Nividia SOC on the dock and on the handheld.

Also by releasing two seperate bundles it goes against the point of the console, i.e being able to "switch"

The dock seems to be something more than a glorified output , there is a framerate drop when Zelda game goes from home to mobile.

Looks amazing. The name, concept, logo and animation clearly communicate what this is.

I agree completely. This is the first time in ages that I've immediately liked the name of a Nintendo console, and they clearly communicated what this is and what it looks like, unlike with a certain other console *coughwiiucough*.

I'm not a fan of the typical Nintendo franchises (I must be the only person on the planet who has still to fully enjoy a Zelda title, and I've played quite a few of them) except Mario, and even that I'm a bit tired of. Still, I'm interested in the Nintendo Switch, particularly if it gets a new Super Mario Maker. That would completely sell me on the console.

Not actually that important
I wonder if there's a reason for the top of the portable/screen to still come out even when fully docked, other than to grab its bezel to slide it out because that'd be super sloppy design

DAY motherfucking one.

Great preview video. I like how Neogaf was basically nuked (503 error) by the news. I don't remember this happening on E3 lol

I have to say, I was expecting to be completely disappointed and confused, pretty much the same as what happened with the WiiU.

However, I think they have made the right moves here. The name is simple, easy to understand for most people. Nintendo Switch. Also, the look of it looks nice; it's a game system, and yet it doesn't look like a cheap toy like a lot of Nintendo systems do.

I think this system has potential. Thumbs up, Nintendo. Also, 3D Mario. Thank you.

I think the design looks great. I'm pretty amazed actually.

Success will depend on 3rd party support of course but like always with every console lol day1

The system's biggest fault is its size. If Nintendo wants me to use this as a portable system it needs to be able to fit into my pocket...as Nintendo handhelds have been able to since 1996, with the original DS hardware being the only outlier.
You didn't understand the point.

And no, I'm not going to start carrying around a manpurse just to play portable games. Hopefully a "Micro" system is in the cards for future release.
Then don't carry it around, use it as a console in your home. It's like you're expecting to use it to its full potential, why should you?

This was such a better announcement than Wii U. I know clearly what this product is, it looks revolutionary and fun. Great all around besides no release date or price.

The dock seems to be something more than a glorified output , there is a framerate drop when Zelda game goes from home to mobile.

All that could come down to is a power saving mode on the Nvidia SOC itself.

So for power saving it downclocks when not docked to increase battery life, and as soon as the system is docked the SOC goes to "full power".

But I'm calling it right now, there is no Nvidia SOC on the dock itself.

I'm going full-on pessimism with this one. Nintendo just seems to be smashing together different tech haphazardly and hoping it sticks.

The system's biggest fault is its size. If Nintendo wants me to use this as a portable system it needs to be able to fit into my pocket...as Nintendo handhelds have been able to since 1996, with the original DS hardware being the only outlier.

And no, I'm not going to start carrying around a manpurse just to play portable games. Hopefully a "Micro" system is in the cards for future release.

I'm also concerned this means the end of games made intentionally with a handheld in mind. Why would Square Enix make a Bravely Default when they can just port over Final Fantasy XV instead? Why would Nintendo make "A Link Between Worlds" when Breath of the Wild is playable on the system? There's so many experiences on the 3DS that were made with shorter play times in mind that I'm afraid are going to fall by the wayside just because now this thing plays the "big boy" games.

These promises from third parties from support are great and all...until you remember this:

In other words....riiiiiight, sure thing guys. I'll be sure to appreciate your six months of software support before you abandon the hardware completely. I'm looking at you EA.

I think this will frankly be a repeat of the Wii U in regards to success in the market. Sony and Microsoft fans are comfortable with their hardware, mobile gamers are satisfied playing their mobile games which means that Nintendo is selling to the same customer base all over again.

Don't get me wrong, I'm purchasing the damn thing because Nintendo's software is basically all I play anymore, but man oh man if I don't miss the Wii U and 3DS already. Sigh.

Glad someone else pointed this out

Maybe the screen that peaks out displays charge info downloading etc while in dock?

What can I say...

I LOVE IT ALREADY!!! I really, really do. Can't believe this 3+ minute video was way better an clear on it's message about what the console is and what it can do than the whole 2 year lapse since Nintendo revealed the Wii U till it's launch. They nailed the first impressions and the overall impressions are really positive so this is off to a pretty damn good start. I also really like the name and the fact that officially has the word Nintendo on the name, just like on the old times. I also like the concept of the hybrid thing but I'm not a portable player at all so this thing will never leave the house but I love that I can finally play all around the house and not just in front of the TV or the signal will went off like on the Wii U. Overall I'm suuuuuuuuuuper impressed with Nintendo Switch and the amount of third party publishers on board makes this even more exciting! I can really see this thing become a success. Something I wasn't feeling that much when Wii U was first revealed because it looked huge, ugly and unpractical, Switch, however, looks nice and sleek and omfg thank god for that matte finish all over the console!

Also, fuck yes this thing still on track for a March 2017 release!! Day zero for sure!

Doesn't seem to have any control gimmicks. No gyro and no touch shown.

Gryo is a pretty normal feature at this point (PS3/PS4/Vita do it too) so I'm guessing it'll have that, though it's not a gimmick anyone's going to center their games around.

I would guess that the deal with the touchscreen is that devs are allowed to use it as an alternative input method but are forbidden from making a game require its use (because obviously that's going to break the game for TV play.)

I also have to say that the video was well done, especially in tone and market focused upon.

Video entirely showed western young adults having fun playing games. No kids. No casuals/families playing together. No stupid puppets or skits catering to kids.

Maybe Nintendo has finally realized the gaming market is young adults, and the western market is much larger than the Japanese, and more profitable than the rest of Asia where piracy is rampant and F2P games like DOTA2 rule.

Looking through the trailer, i really like the idea of playing sport games one on one on opposite to each other. I think Nintendo could really market that.

It is pretty competitive stance to have, also taking pens. Will solve the whole stop looking at my controller arguments haha.

I'm wondering how much of a difference there will be between this and the retail version considering its just 5 months away. There are spots where it could be cleaned up and made a bit less ugly, for sure

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
They have a lot of things they need to prove. None of which were addressed in this video. Online gameplay, infrastructure, game licenses, storage, etc.

They did however double down on the WiiU-controller and seem ready to sacrifice the DS-legacy on a gamble.

I'm not too convinced and will gladly skip it unless it proves to be outstanding.

indeed, could show notifications when sleeping or something? but I am surprised the screen is covered at all, maybe just to diseuade any evil thoughts of dual screen gameplay?
love these coloured shops btw.

I'm glad it looks fairly high tech and not embarrassing. I think we need to thank Nvidia for that. If we can just get some quality 3rd party support, this will come to work with me.
