Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

Looks pretty damn good. Hopefully it isn't undone with gimmicky controls and being underpowered like a lot of recent Nintendo systems are.

Also hopefully the system has a lot more variety in terms of games this time around.

That snap controller is giving me Dreamcast vibes, at least the grips are angled that is a plus.

The Dreamcast controllers used to give me hand cramps.

It looks like one of the retail display cases leaked from a GameStop.

I was going to say that it's way to close to the ngage and they should ditch it, but that's straight up an ngage case.

edit: look like I was late on that

Can we agree this is a much better reveal than the Wii U, right?

I remember all the "touch the controller", etc that made the Wii U seem like an add on.

Also, it's a better name, and much less words in the trailer.

Man I really wanna know what features the controller has or doesn't have.

*Touch screen
*Rumble
*Speaker
*Mic
*Gyro
*NFC
*Accelerometer
*Pointer

In what control mode are any of these offered if any?

Why are people complaining about the internal 32GB storage? The main reason for PS4 and XBO to have 500GB/1TB internal storage are their abysmal disc drives that force you to install every game to the HDD. You won't need that much storage on a cartridge based system without forced installs. Also, if Wii U and 3DS are anything to judge by, we will most likely be able to insert a simple Micro SD or plug in an external HDD (preferably the first concerning the portability) to enhance the Switch's storage. Problem solved.

About the headphone jack: It has to be on the top, or else you wouldn't be able to set it on a surface with the stand.

I guess this isnt the console for me. Not that excited about it, I dont want to carry extra stuff with me so I dont see the point of the tablet.

Shame they went this way about it.

I don't know.

It's crazy how Nintendo gave up the only field where they were still somehow strong and double dipping on that WiiU concept, which make me think that Nintendo and Iwata never tried to do something new but were still following the WiiU philosophy with the Switch.

Right now it's a WiiU which you are able to leave the room now.

That's exactly right. I find that staggering. Rather than a powerful DS you pay on TV, it's a slightly more powerful WiiU you can play anywhere. So again, why would this sell a tonne more than WiiU?

People are putting a lot of faith in that list of publisher/developers Nintendo threw up. That's like a console announcement staple. That list needs a grain of salt.

Exactly.

In my mind the thought process is that they wanted to go for a very powerful mobile SOC, and the easiest way to get around the worry of bad battery life is simply down clock it while portable.

It's the best way to manage the hybrid performance.

Developing some sort of dual SOC system sounds expensive, complex, over complicated and with no real benefits.
it could perfectly be tegra x1 clocked at 500 mhz (250 Gflops, a little more than a Wiiu) and full 1 Ghz docked getting double the performance for full hd.

What about people who want to purchase games on the eshop?

As you say there will likely be ways to increase storage. I think the dock likely houses bigger storage, and the argument for those wanting more on handheld would be that the NS is a home gaming system first and foremost.

But there'll most probably be micro sd or something to increase storage on the go.

You're right, but my speculation isn't based on what I think the performance or frequency differences will be, simply that I think any hardware will be on the handheld unit itself.

Different performance states will be dictated by the bios/os that detects when you are docked or not and then adjusts accordingly, as opposed to the notion that when docked the system somehow combines with an improved processor located on the dock.

I'm fine with just playing it at home, as I hardly took the DS or 3DS with me on the go, but the ports are boring for everyone who has PS4's and Wii U's already.

Only a new 3D Mario game looked interesting to me, and hopefully it's more like the first four (64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1/2) than the last 2...("3D" Land, "3D" World).

Wow, I'm seriously impressed with this. Really cool concept. If there's a Zelda launch bundle I may buy this, which would make it the first Nintendo system I've owned since the Gamecube.

And to whoever said thank God for the pro controller...+1. Standard one is hideous and doesn't look comfortable at all to me.

I don't know why you say that, it's first a home console, if you don't want to bring it with you, don't bring it with you. and if you don't want the console in your hand while you play, just get a pro controller

That's one way to look at it I guess.

I think the goal or idea is to be both a handheld and a console depending on what the user wants. It may look like a WiiU but WiiU was not a mobile handheld. Sure, Switch isn't super tiny, but people are more and more used to bigger handhelds with giant screen phones being the norm.

SSDs are getting cheaper, but not that cheap. It'll be internal flash storage, just like the Wii and Wii U, expandable with SD cards.

Keep in mind that the system will be too underpowered to handle the level of assets that have balooned current-gen games to 50GB+ sizes. And of course cartridges have much better read times than blu-ray discs, so installing physical games to internal storage won't be necessary.

I'm still hoping for a high capacity, ie HDD, storage solution within the dock, at least as a repository. SD cards are pretty cheap, but games are big. Even on the Wii U there are several games that go over 20gb and if the Switch actually natively renders games at 1080p when docked that will only increase the number of large games on the system. Not 50+ but certainly close to or maybe over the 30GB mark. Even with a 128gb SD card that's going to fill up fast between smaller 1-6GB traditional handheld games and a few 10-30gb games.

Being able to store certain games, rather than having to redownload them, will be a huge plus, and if we're able to play them off that dock storage all the better. There definitely will be some games I will only care to play docked on the big screen so being able to keep them stored there and not take up space on the mobile device would be great.

I love the idea of the Switch but now I'm really hating see all these armchair analysts come out of the wood work again to shit on the Switch. A bunch of my friends are doing it right now instead of being moderate/excited. Really ruins the vibe I have it. It's cool if you don't like it but god literally the MOMENT the video was uploaded it was shit on.

It occurs to me... All the extras in that video SURELY had to sign NDAs, right? Every single one... God, that must have been a nightmare.

I thind the name is fine. I'm just happy it's simple and not goofy. The focus in their hardware names should probably be on "Nintendo" and not some made up word – that's the real brand. I'm happy there don't appear to be any control gimmicks, beyond the various attached/detached modes. I like the aesthetic of the stand, and the general shift away from glossy white.

I don't think it'll be a touchscreen.

They already need to design games without touch functionality since the screen is docked when you're playing.

I think it would be pretty insane to have it not be a touchscreen. You're right that they probably can't make it central to any game experience due to the dock, but we're in an age where people really expect handheld screens to respond to touch. They should have it if only for secondary things like menus, media playback, web browsing (assuming they support that stuff).

Wii, Wii U and 3DS all support SD or microSD. I expect this will continue.

They may do it like the Vita where devs can choose to use it.

Does this appeal to vita owners at all or is that voice inside me a crazy person. Im sort of dreading seeing what it costs in Canadian rainbow funny money.

We know that. I predicted as much a year and a half ago.

But I would have assumed they'd leverage the DS, not the WiiU.
the worse thing is they leveraged Wii u without its main benefit over portable, more power. This will put them further from other consoles future multis (not going x86 doesnt help either).

Nah, we do these all the time. Your company signs it and all the employees are just bound.
At most, you sign a sign off sheet saying you were briefed and your company is responsible for enforcement.
