Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

Nintendo has me interested in one of their systems again with this. Those couple of seconds of footage from the new Mario got me more hyped than anything else.

I watched the video last night, I liked it. I'm pretty curious about what is inside, but I like how flexible the system seems to be. The controllers attaching on both sides reminds me of the famicon. While not announced, I am sure the system probably has touch controls, but when docked it would be hard to use them. I wonder if one of the reasons the dock is so large couldn't be because in addition to charging, it also has some streaming capabilities. It would be nice to use it in a mixed mode. I'm guessing that they simplified the different use cases of the Switch for the video.

The fucking scenarios are hilarious. Like any group of friends that are getting together to play couch co-op are almost certainly using a TV. Maybe I could see the road trip thing happening , but no. I don't know anyone who are getting together with their friends to pass out tiny gimped remotes (Remember playing Mario Cart on Wii and how much the Wii-mote sucked ass) and play on a 6.2" screen out on a park bench or something.

Not saying the option is bad, but they seemed to really focus on it, when that's really not something that will be used extensively or is as anywhere near important as the titles and system details.

In Japan at least, probably the two most popular places to play games are the train, and McDonalds. I could see this being a very popular way to play at restaurants here.

I think Nintendo should go for the budget gamer price point

$249.99/£199.99

Includes:
Tablet Console
Dock (charger can be used separately without dock)
Detachable controller
Internal 32GB Storage
Grip

Sold Separately:
Pro Controller
Expandable Storage SD on Tablet system and/or HDD for dock

They may make a small loss but due to the architecture the costs of the system will come down so fast. Some of these old tablets are a fraction of the price they were for when they launched.

Just like they did with the Nintendo Thrii Dii Ess.

Oh guess what, that console had no motion controls and has dual screens so it kept the "DS."

Please don't attack me for just the sake of it ;)

I agree if your point is that Swiitch is a worse name than Switch

Heh, that's why I hope they have larger remote available. :D

Microsoft would only need to enable remote play at the same quality as their in home streaming via the Xbox app to have the same features.

Hell, they demoed Halo 4 being streamed to a mobile years ago.

Remote play via the internet will not be anywhere near gaming on a native handheld for a long, long time.

So, why would the average joe choose this over their smartphone / tablet? I mean, judging by the video that's the target audience.. I don't buy it though.
There are people who want console games on the go. Pretty sure my cousin is still like that and why she only has a 3DS and iPhone. This might make her interested.

So then.

Switch, PS4 Pro, Xbox Scorpio ... they can say what they want, this looks like the start of Gen 9 to me.

Switch is a third pillar that is far more handheld than console, no matter how Nintendo protest to the contrary, as well as less powerful than what you're calling last gen. The PS4Pro is just jazzing up some of the games on the normal PS4, and Scorpio will have to only be able to do the same bar VR titles of dubiously often support, since it's all got to run on XO as well.

You may as well say the Xbox One S is actually the 9th gen system by your logic, since it's a redesign with more power, features and upgraded capabilities, and the Scorpio is the start of 10th gen consoles.

The fact is Nintendo fucked up so badly with the WiiU, that they're having to give up and start over from scratch halfway through the generation. They are such an irrelevant niche part of the home console market that they don't get to dictate any wider trends, and neither Sony nor Microsoft, the two companies that are actually relevant with their opinions are calling this the start of another generation.

I mean seriously, console generations have never been as clearly defined as to just when new hardware started coming out. Let's not start trying to overcomplicate it further by treating refreshes and do overs as more than they are.

I was looking at the trailer and noticed that the 'joycon grip' seems to have some bulky grips on the back. It's an interesting design choice, probably helps a lot to get a good grip for such a square button layout. I'm not sure this has been discussed yet, but it caught my eye.

Yes we do. Nintendo merged their handheld and console hardware decisions years ago, when development on this started in full force. Iwata was also saying at least a year or so ago that they were looking to consolidate their development onto one platform.

This is THE Nintendo platform going forward.

Awesome, now I can enjoy all the 3DS goodness on a big screen and a proper controller.

So its basically what I thought the WiiU would be. Nintendo finally waking up and fully realising a true hybrid!

I am totally buying this!

anybody determined the estimated size of the dock yet based on the size of the usb ports?

my limited skills show its about 7 usb ports high, and 6.5 wide

using the vertical set up, that makes it about 72 mm tall, and 29.25 mm deep, cant really determine how wide it is with my low rate skills

I know I'm really late(had stuff to do in the morning) but here are my thoughts. I really like it. Switch seems like a generic name but it gets the point across and I don't find it that bad. The Zelda and Mario footage were awesome and I look forward to playing them.

Day one for sure.

So I can put on 1 Joy-Con turn the screen to portrait mode and play Ikaruga and other vertical shumps in all it's bullethell glory? THIS IS THE GREATEST CONSOLE OF ALLTIME!!!!

I dunno, I could see meeting at a bar and playing Mario Kart over some beers.

Agreed, I think that would be an ideal price for this anything higher and they are setting themselves up for failure.

Switch is an amazing name.

Marketing on point right out the gate.
I'm not a fan of it, It's a pretty mediocre name but maybe it will grow on me.

Why does the average Joe buy any gaming system? Presumably because they expect the games to be better designed, control better with buttons and analog sticks, and hopefully a traditional gaming model instead of free-with-necessary-microtransactions.

It's to have a console for your living room TV and a portable for portability, and the capability to buy one game and immediately have it on "both" devices.

In a world where Pokemon Go exists people still doubt that other people will go out and play if there is a proper motivation.

One thing I don't understand is if Nintendo has come out and said this is a home console first and foremost, why would people be forced to buy all the mobile tech including screen that would sit useless 90% of the time. Doesn't it make it essentially a Kinect if the vast majority of the time you wont use it but still have to pay for it.

I'm strictly a portable gamer; nor sure how to feel about this.

Nintendo isn't gonna publically come out and say that Switch is gonna replace 3DS and oh yeah it's not backwards compatible. They have Pokémon to sell in a few weeks. 3DS is gonna be six years old when Switch comes out. This system absolutely is as much their new handheld as it is their console.

If they do a slim version in a few years, they can call it the "New Switch" or "Switch U".

"Real" (console-style) games. I can see this being huge with 30-something lapsed gamers.
