Nintendo: Switch dock only for charging and TV-out, Amiibo support, no commt on touch

As long as it's at least as powerful as the Wii U I think it will be fine for their games.

I just hope they manage to actually support this one.

I personally would be crushed if there were no touch screen because that would mean no Mario Maker. I can truly see myself playing Mario Maker 5 or even 10 years from now. It is a timeless game with unlimited replay value and it would really suck big time to have to keep my Wii U for 10 years to play it. Not to mention the online community for it will die on Wii U soon too.

What do you guys think about Mario Maker coming to Switch? Has to have a touchscreen for that right?

Also, with Nintendo just starting to get into mobile phone games, how could they possibly omit a touchscreen?

i'm confused...lol

The official Nintendo statement is that it is a home console that you can play on the go.

Marketing.

When a "core" gamer thinks of a "home console that you can play on the go," they think it's a PS4/X1 power-level console that you can take anywhere. When Nintendo says it's a "home console that you can play on the go," they mean that it's a portable gaming device that you can play all your favorite games on.

They mean that you'll have Breath of the Wild on the same device that you would play a portable game and you can take it anywhere and plug it into a TV. It's the ultimate realization of the Wii U: instead of occasionally playing a game on the tablet, you're not tied down to the console and can take Nintendo with you to work, school, on your commute, or to a friend's.

The Tegra they're most likely using is substantially more powerful than the Wii U.

But probably not as powerful as an Xbox One or PS4; we knew the CPU wasn't and now we can be reasonably sure the GPU isn't.

No hidden GPU in the dock station??

No.

The thing is that you can't use the tablet and play on the TV at the same time. So if they port Mario Maker you'd inky be able to design stages with touch on the tablet. They'll have to rework it a bit since there's no two screen play as well

People saying $200 are in Crazytown. Shield Tablet K1 costs that much with no controller or dock.

No.

I don't know if it's just marketing, i'm not putting processing power in perspective here, but just the games, all the games they showed until now seems to play like a "regular" home console game and there's no confirmation of a touch screen. I honestly believe that Nintendo still have the intention of keeping the 3DS alive and coexisting with the Switch for a few more years.

Not sure why people are having a hard time understanding all of this

Docked:

Touch screen for Nintendo mobile games.

So Nintendo's newest console, which is also newest portable, is a tablet.

I wonder what tablets it compares to out on the market today.

Hmm, well assuming that Mario Maker is gonna be ported to the Switch at some point, will you have to make levels with a controller? Maybe they'll have a way for you to make levels on an iPad or something?

But the dock supporting the tablets tv out wouldnt rule out higher resolution support from it.

The average tv in a retail store larger than a 50 inch now is a 4k. Its a toss up 50/50 for anything between 40 and 50 inch nowadays. The average tv sold in electronic stores the last 2 years have been 4ks.

Nvidia Shield?

Is this going to be more powerful than PS4 which has been on the market for 3 years?

Huh?

PS4 / 2013 - 1.84 TFlops (1840 GFlops)
Xbox One / 2013 - 1.31 TFLops ( 1310 GFlops)

Nvidia Tegra X1 (used in Nvidia Shield TV console) 0.5 TF (512 GFlops)

Switch - custom Tegra chip. Development kits are using Tegra X1
So we know what ballpark Switch is as far as graphics performance, even without knowing the exact specs.

Nintendo's new system is much less powerful than either PS4 or Xbox One.

If the goal is parity between mobile and console gaming, then I can see this not having a touchscreen.

Though at the same time, I figure almost all mobile sized screens would have one...

And if there's one thing I know about Nintendo, it's that they like having additional input options.

A laptop or tablet, may not have 1080p screen. However when docked, they can output to higher resolutions to a monitor. I don't see how this is hard to understand for some.

Isnt the rumored dev kit also being over clocked cause it was being actively cooled while this probably won't be

Not really sure why people are trying to delude themselves that this is a home console. It's effectively the 3DS Mark 2 with a fancy dock for video out.

If it's using the chips it is rumoured to be then it will have less than 1/3rd the power of a PS4.

Nintendo is beginning a handheld only generation, they are leaving the home console business this gen and patching over the transition with marketing and PR.

It may be wise on their part but it is what it is, please don't try to pretend otherwise just because you can't handle the reality of it.

What major games do they have coming out for it besides Pokemon? They hedged their bets in a similar manner when the DS came out.

Except you cant compare flops across arcitectures. Additionally the NS will utalise 16FP which bumps that number to >1TF in specific circumstances

It seems like NSw will be above Xbox One docked and below it when not. The CPU in the Xbox One is a horrible mess and Nvidia probably made this thing extremely easy to use for developers because Nvidia is pretty much buddy-buddy with them already.

It wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo asked Nvidia to court western developers because Nvidia already has strong relationships with then on PC.

It's the most powerful handheld on the market between the big 3, I think that's what they're going for. They are maintaining their position as the underdog in the console market.

Pokémon on a console-level (Wii U+) machine has already got me wet, though.

Damn, I was hoping it would provide a substantial boost to the performance of the device so it can achieve 1080p / 30 frames. Watch this end up being weaker than both X1 and PS4.

I'm a little disappointed to be honest, let's hope the games are great at least.

This makes me wonder if they will sell a dock that powers it up in the future. There was rumors that the "Handheld version" would be the first to hit the market a while back, and a "Console Version" would be released later.

They probably have a dock pro in the works which lets them target both casual and hardcore markets at the same time without having a high entry price for the basic experience.

Touch screen for Nintendo mobile games.

Plus you can have the active cooling going at full speed without having to worry about power consumption or noise when it's docked.

Has an Ethernet port on the dock been confirmed btw?

The fact that there's DeNA support and that they hinted at being able to run mobile titles a while back makes it obvious to me that there will be touch screen capabilities.

It's less like a 3DS and more like a Wii U with the guts in the gamepad instead of a separate box. I don't know how that makes it not a home console.

Yeah I'm assuming now that I'm caught up tonight with most of the info that they're going for flexibility for their entire ecosystem instead of actively trying to please no one

Laura Kate Dale did not say this. I don't know where the hell you're pulling this from.

Anyway, since this is a console, I expect it to be at least 250-300, with 300 being the most likely, and 250 and 350 being the lower and upper and second least likely.

The 3DS has very solid list of games for 2017, here are some of the main titles:

Pikmin
Super Mario Maker
Poochy and Yoshi's Wooly World
Mario Sports Superstars
Lady Layton
Dragon Quest XI
Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns
The Snack World

It could mean anything from DeNa working on dedicated Switch games, or porting over some of their mobile catalog. But, DeNA is obviously involved with Nintendo on developing My Nintendo which is supposed to be integrated into the new hardware.

Well, you're wrong.

It's getting home console games. It's a significantly bigger leap than any Nintendo portable before it. If Nintendo simply saw it as their next handheld, the jump in tech wouldn't even be close to this.

Nintendo is unifying their hardware, which is something they should have done long ago.

There's some support but I don't see it being anything like the 3DS in it's prime, getting exclusive Zelda, Mario, Animal Crossing and the like.
