Nintendo: Switch dock only for charging and TV-out, Amiibo support, no commt on touch

There's no way this thing doesn't have touch screen. It's portable UI and interactivity would be greatly diminished, especially considering touch screens are the norm now.

There's no way the company that popularized touch screen gaming is releasing a new handheld without touch screen functionality.

Nothing really surprising. Better marketing than I think we're accustomed to from Nintendo.

I think it looks really slick.

Lol @ people who think the Switch will be $200. It'll, absolutely, be $399. I would be ridiculously surprised if it's any less. This is Nintendo we're talking about, and they do not lose money on consoles.

From the sounds of it, the Switch is more powerful than most/all tablets that exist right now, which puts it in that $600-$900 range. Since it's a game console, though, I'd expect it to launch at $399, or maybe $499.

Avatar bet for $249 +/- $50?

You are right, it will be $399... CAD :(

I think that expensive of a price would drive away a ton of interested buyers, tbh. I know I wouldn't pay $400 for a portable gaming system with a 720p display. We're about to get the PS4 Pro and Scorpio, both massively more powerful than this device, that will retail at the price you're suggesting (at least the pro will). That would be a horrible decision from Nintendo.

Regardless, I need to see some more official details in regards to specs before I jump in, battery life as well.

Not having touch screen would be completely awkward for kids. As far as they are concerned, touch screen is the default screen for them. They even tried to press on my PC monitor and wonder why nothing happened.

On the one hand that is good news in the sense that extras to plug in to various tv's around your house or other places should be relatively cheap. Bad news that there is no extra power sauce while connected to the dock.

Specs and price point needed badly.

Came here to post this. Had the same thought if the dock was "dumb". I want an extra so I can easily switch which tvs are the ones to play on...hopefully they will sell the doc and extra power cord for $25ish.

Please be kidding. Nobody is paying 399$ for this thing anytime soon.

What does "provide power to the console" even mean?

It provides power. As in electricity.

The fact that they did not show either the UI of the console or any diem of touch control not even once makes it obvious to me that they are related and that they will explain it in a separate trailer soon.

Agreed!
Nintendo is primarily aimed at kids and families with hardcore games (like us) coming in after.
Selling for more than $350 is suicide and you can bet that Microsoft is gonna bring their A game with Scorpio advertising come next year. They can afford to out advertise the Switch as well.
Also this is coming in March, meaning that a lot of people will already bought/received a new console for Christmas and be invested in it, and parents wont be too thrilled about having to buy another console 12 weeks later.
For me however... Day 1!

Its gonna have a touch screen Dena is listed as one of the developers lol

I already covered this in another thread, but:

1) 720p screens aren't that expensive today.
2) Controllers are probably using the unique input patent which allows internals inside controllers to be less advanced, meaning savings on cost.
3) No optical disc drive, cutting down price.
4) Nvidia deal article (broken by Semi-Accurate) also included a statement that the deal was incredible for Nintendo, to the point where Nvidia was only breaking even or maybe even taking a loss in a way to get back into the gaming console realm.
5) Multiple reports have stated over the past year that Nintendo was interested in hitting a surprisingly low entry point. The most recent was MCV, who reported this when Emily and EG leaked the system a couple months ago. They said it was "lower than anybody expect" or something of that nature.

I'm not seeing where the cost is coming from here.

As for the touchscreen:

Seriously? You think Nintendo would cut that out of this system, especially when they have mobile games on the way? That makes zero sense. Also, Emily said it would have a touchscreen.

This is what I hoped for.

Devs will have 1 spec to shoot for & test, and as players we can have faith that games lose nothing by going mobile.

It will be $399 so start saving. Even if it's lower, may as well have that amount due to any games you may want. It's a safe amount of money to put aside.

I will be VERY glad to be wrong, but c'mon son...

Also I declare it will have touch, because Miitomo and other Nintendo mobile properties.

Last declaration is that the battery will be sufficient since it will only do gaming with non moving gaming media and wifi, and not the numerous programs and apps that a phone has to keep running in the background. I am deliberately ignoring the Vita to make this declaration work so hush now.

I'm probably in the minority, but I feel like even $299 is way too high. This is essentially a handheld that has TV connectivity. Unless we find out something special about that dock, it is literally the exact functionality the PSP GO had with its dock. For me I think it's gotta be about $249 at the most, which is what the 3DS originally launched at, and even then look at how well that did at that price.

It already says it will provide "charging" why would they need to say power after that?

Thats like saying here is your phone and your wall mount/cord it will provided charging and power to your phone.

The phone is powered on its own, just like the Tablet part of the Switch, no need to even mention power

So Breath of the Wild on Wii U is going to be the definitive version? I thought the dock was going to have extra power in it when you plug it in.

Well I don´t like the "charging up"-part. Constantly beeing charged up is not good for the battery afaik

I believe most modern devices stop charging the battery when it is full and get power directly from the adapter. Source: talked to a PhD student who did a project that had to do with measuring cell phone charge cycles, who said it was fine if I left my iPhone plugged in overnight.

The Switch by itself is assumed to be more powerful than the Wii U, no? So some improvements right there.

The simple fact that every games have to be playable on tv, and you can play them with a classic pad or a reconstruct pad, and none of them even have a screen... should tell everyone there is no tactile screen lol.

OR games that use the touch screen needs 2 input models, OR games with tactile screen are only playable on the portable part.

But if i hear Nintendo, this isn't going in that direction. It's a home console that you can take with you. The portable part doesn't have its own life.

You should make an avatar bet, since you're so certain.

Games need to run in 1080P minimum in dock mode or Nintendo seriously dropped the ball again. I will be baffled if they shot themselves in the foot like this. I mean TV's are 4K as the norm at this point. You can not release a console that runs games on our 4K TV's in 720P... in 2017. Seriously. Wtf?!

They could just be purposely vague right now. It is still possible that there is an active/passive setup here.

When the internal battery is charged, it's running off the power supplied by the dock. How virtually any hardware with an internal battery does it.

One thing that should be noted is that Nintendo hasn't talked about the dock as a whole, neither main specs.

So whatever it does or doesn't, won't be randomly answered to any website.

They haven't talked about USB ports and been able to plugs HDDs to it, they haven't talked about SD Cards size and types you can use.

Not that I'm holding any hope or whatever, but it is the kind of stuff that if there, it won't be announced casually.

Heck, it needs "something" to process a 720p image and output at 1080p or 4k video, otherwise image would be a bit blurry.

Guys, WiiU is under 200GFlops. This handheld will not be under 300-400GFlops and likely a fair bit higher.. The definitive versions will be on Switch.

Nintendo? $499? lol, they'd be out of their damned minds if they do that. I expect a Basic package for $299 (standard package) and a Premium one (includes Pro Controller and a game) for $399.

I really don't think they can afford being priced the same as the PS4 Pro and Scorpio.

Just because those are the main functions doesn't mean they're the only functions. I could definitely see there being additional juice in the dock.

This has to be a joke post.

Having a tablet like decide with no touch would be ridiculous, even for Nintendo standards. Would any sane person design a handheld device that's going to run apps like Facebook or Netflix without some sort of touch based solution in place? If I'm just gonna watch a movie or browse the web on that thing, I don't want those controllers attached, and I don't want to have to have one of those joypads around to navigate. Is the device just going to be a brick when the pads aren't attached?

I don't buy it, not even Nintendo is that inane.

I wanna say that it'll have system-level input and apps like Netflix and the web browser be touch enabled, but games have no touch. Hell, maybe even a swipe while in-game is the gesture to bring up the system menu or something. But for the sake of simplicity they left it out of this reveal (understandable since it was only 3.5 mins) and will talk about it at a later date.

I agree, the tablet just screams "TOUCH ME!" at this day and age. The form factor speaks the universal language for a tablet, it wouldn't make any sense to not have any touch on something that very, very obviously looks like a tablet.

lol no

I really hope the screen is tactile at least, if not, one of the best things WiiU brought to the table, miiverse, is going to miss so many important features in the process.
