Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

This is what Nintendo became since the Wii era though.
It's absolutely not what they were before.

NES/SNES/N64/Gamecube are all consoles that fit the traditional, powerful home console I loved about Nintendo hardware.

Nintendo changed, just like people change. My wife isn't the same person I married, but I love her anyway and continue to accept her despite new challenges that crop up. I am sure she feels the same way about me. Nintendo will be Nintendo.

What I find interesting is the omnipresent drive to push Nintendo to provide more realistic graphics, when that has been something Nintendo has never done. They want realistic Zelda. Why? Wind Waker was amazing. Again, that is pressuring Nintendo to be something they are not.

You know why I don't believe it? The Wii U was able to run the games at a minimum framebuffer of 720p right? The Switch is more powerful, but can only run games at 504p? lol

I know Nintendo don't have a history of powerful hardware but I can't see them going backwards. But if we're to believe the "experts" the Switch will natively run games at a 504p framebuffer and output to your tv at 720p.

I think some Wii U games were sub 720.

Stuff like Black Ops 3 maybe?

There's nothing wrong with voicing my opinion

Of course not. We are talking about plastic consumer products here.
And I agree with you; this thing has 'flop' written all over it. I have no idea what went down in those Ninty meetings- aside from a whole lot of alcohol. It's like they don't/can't compete in the market anymore. Three systems in a row, and now merge console and handheld?
Yeeeah, this doesn't look encouraging.

I'm extremely disappointed, I admit it.

There's nothing wrong with voicing my opinion though, I don't understand that mentality that only positivity towards Nintendo and their choices in business are allowed.

I don't believe Switch will succeed in finding a strong market, and I am free to voice this opinion.
This is literally the exact thing people have been saying this was for the last year. I don't really get how you can be disappointed. Did you actually expect it would be completely different than the thing everyone said it was?

the digital foundry video analysis really shat all over this feature "a bunch of people huddled over a small screen playing videogames".

Its a curious case of is this scenario really gonna happen. I guess if its available as a feature, sure. But the controllers are also so small. If they also simulataneous designed this system to pair to ipads/ipad pros - you get a much larger screen real estate which sort of makes this less onerous.

what would be a killer app if if the tiny controllers can sync to ipad and be used to control mario jump (but then it highlights the "pointlessness" of the switch" so that's probably not going to happen

To me, that specific scenario would work great for traveling families

Man, this is like targeting a niche of a niche. How many people owned both a Wii U and 3DS and were complaining about buying the same game twice?

How many people owned one, and were tempted to get the other for its exclusives, but just couldn't mentally sway themselves to pony up for that second device?

Now it's buy Wii U, get 3DS free, or vice versa.

it doesn't even have the docked processing boost though. Which I think a lot of people expected. So its actually sort of even worse than what most people expected out of NX.

LET THE LEGEND COME TO LIFE!

So is Nintendo done with dedicated handhelds now?

I'd think so since that market could just not use the dock and play all games as a portable. Maybe they put out a smaller portable only sku down the road though.

Plus a big part of the idea is to have all their games on one platform and not split between a dedicated console and a dedicated portable.

If this gets legit games - at least decent versions of the common multiplatform titles in a timely fashion - and is cheap? It's going to kill in the market. Full-fat/full-featured Nintendo games, portable or on the big screen, along with real multiplatform current-gen console titles anywhere you want is wild shit for lapsed/casual console gamers.

I just hope it's got enough hardware oomph to get that kind of software, even at lower settings/IQ.

Chill dude, he's just giving you advice on how to make life more joyful for you and for others, it sucks that things you've been anticipating for more than a year to turn out not on par with your expectations, but being aggressively angry about it isn't going to help you.

I got a "If you have no intention of buying Nintendo hardware and just want Nintendo to fail so you can buy Nintendo games on non-Nintendo hardware. Take that agenda someplace else." from him.

I think the reply I gave is deserved.

I would argue that even if Nintendo were to do what you're suggesting - a high-end machine on par with the others - then it wouldn't really change their fortunes a whole lot.

I would also argue that some of Nintendo's greatest games have come in the post Gamecube era you decry - be it on the DS, Wii, 3DS or Wii U. Whether or not you consider them to be true to Nintendo's roots is up to you I suppose.

Hell, Nintendo going third party would contrast greatly with their roots to begin with.

But, I'm not going to try and change your mind - fair play to you and whatnot, it's cool.

I love your posts.
I must say, it's a pleasure to read about your opinion, and I agree with you.

I think Nintendo's biggest strength is in their software, and they can adapt to whatever hardware they made to produce great experiences.

I just wish this hardware would be a bit less gimmicky if that makes any sense.

But again, thanks for your posts.

....didn't those consoles flop?

Different time, I think it's still worth trying with a slight innovation that wouldn't fundamentally change the way we play, unless it's as genius as the joystick.

I have a tablet holder on my bed's head. That sucker is totally gonna hold a switch for some multiplayer with my Gf, on the tiny joycons... What a stupid name. Dope anyway.

On here? That's not true.

That said, there is nothing stopping them from upgrading this thing with a more powerful dock down the road.

If it's worse than what most people expected, then why are most people so happy with the reveal and ready to jump in?

The people thirsting for AAA 3rd party content already have a XBone, PS4, or souped up PC by now. Aside from Nintendo IP, the portability of this thing is the key selling factor. If you're not in the market for either of those things, then oh well.

Sounds like another Wii U situation.

And that's why you're not a CEO

Your point then ?
Seems like rubbing it in just for the sake of it.

That's actually not a very smart reply from you, since I admitted I don't have the skills for being a CEO.

Doesn't mean my opinion has no worth at all in what a product could be, I'm part of the market.

I mean, if you wanna start childish passive aggressive bullsh*t, from this very post you made, I don't think you're very bright either.
See how absolutely pointless this kind of attack is ?

As far as I can tell, when you dock it, it pushes twice as many pixels on screen (720p -> 1080p). It's also possible the CPU runs in a power saving mode when undocked.

Reveal trailer is now sitting at around 3,5 million views and 250k likes 10 hours after release.

Never expected this kind of response to be honest. Seems like the reveal itself has been a huge success and hopefully they can translate that into a successfull product.

Nintendo had 5 out of 10 worldwide trending (2 being from Japan) on Twitter for more than 2 hours after they posted the video. "Nintendo Switch" left the top trending worldwide after more than 3 hours and had more than 600k tweets. Whoever asks "who needs this?" or "who wants this" doesn't pay attention. The buzz is here. Nintendo just needs to hit the right price and a good launch line-up.

The feedback is mostly positive even here where usually the cynic point of view wins a lot of times. Just look at this thread.

Sure, not all the people find this console appealing, but this is nothing like Wii U.

Ugh, this thing looks like another gimmick junk from Nintendo. Already last gen tech that won't be able to run new games. When will Nintendo get a clue. A buy from me if I can play my 3ds games on it, other than that I don't see this thing becoming a social phenomenon like the trailer makes it out to be.

Maybe they are hooked up to the bluetooth of the car stereo, or maybe it's just an ad showing you can play games in the car.

Right. If I buy a bracket I can attach it to he back of my drivers seat so my kids can try and concentrate on 50% of a 6" image playing mario kart, while either the tinny speakers annoy me or else I bluetooth the whole thing through the car (as if it's gonna have bluetooth).

Ignoring the market and purely focusing on myself, I'm really excited for this. It's a secondary gaming device for me, so power isn't a huge concern. I like to play handhelds outside, when I take my dog out. I always buy whatever handheld Nintendo has.

So this is just what I would be getting anyway, except I'm going to be able to play it all on my TV, too. I'm going to pop in Etrian Odyssey VI or whatever and have the choice to play it in the living room or in my backyard.

Portables are starting to bomb, so my use case isn't really all that common, I guess. But whatever. I'm jusr happy that stuff like Monster Hunter, Fire Emblem, Atlus' portable lineup, and so on are all going to be playable wherever I need them to be.

I want to see some games. Games like those. Give me a Nintendo direct showing off the new generation of Japanese handheld support. I like the hybrid idea, a lot. I don't care much about power and the ability to seamlessly play on the go, around the house, or on the TV is pretty awesome. I don't like the aesthetics they settled on for the device, from name to look but the concept is cool and it seems it'll work. But, I really want to see some software; I want to have an idea what shape the support for this system is going to have. How much 3DS support will jump over (or will they stay on 3DS as long as they can, or jump to mobile, etc.)? Will it leech any Vita support? How much multiplatform support with PS4/XBOne/PC will it get? Today just left me wanting a Nintendo Direct tbh, as nothing was really a surprise (except how hard they are pushing it as a home console, I really hope that is PR BS and there is no 3DS successor ahead of us) and I'm a software guy.

This has sold me honestly. I was planning on buying an NVIDIA Shield tablet but if this thing has an OS that lets me do tablety things well then I'm a day 1 buyer. I hope it's fairly priced in Australia.

the digital foundry video analysis really shat all over this feature "a bunch of people huddled over a small screen playing videogames".

The thing is, Digital Foundry only really focuses on one aspect of gaming - graphics.

They tend to overlook what many people prefer - fun. At least that's what Nintendo is counting on.

If you think a 3D Mario, a Zelda or any other first party from Nintendo wouldn't sell on PS4/Xbox one, you're the one who's delusional.

And I'm sorry if I'm making you sad by wishing Nintendo the worst of successes with this Switch thing, but that's my way of saying they should stop with this mentality of always pursuing volatile and gimmicky markets. They apparently need a huge slap in the face to wake up from this pipe dream, since not even the huge fail of the Wii U (which I bought) wasn't enough to turn them down on tablet based gaming.

It still baffles me that this Switch is a Wii U you can take on the go basically.
Do they really think the Wii U failed because of being tethered to a TV ? What is wrong with Nintendo's hardware team.

I'm probably in the minority, but I haven't had a TV in like 6 years. Where I live most gaming is done outside of the home. Nintendo's most successful consoles are are consoles that can be played away from home. I think they are fairly good idea of where to go.

I think Wii U wasn't a failure because of it's screen, or lack of power, but probably because it was tethered to the home.

You may not use it, but people definitely will.

Do you guys not wear seatbelts in the back?

This whole picture is insanely stupid. Who is going to hear anything out the speakers except the driver whose head it is next to? Kids will be hunching out of their restraints to peer at the screen when they could have instead just been given a pair of 2DS consoles. It is batshit insane. The whole thing is.

Yeah, this looks really dumb. Two guys crouched over a tiny screen with tiny controllers in their hands.

The other route for Nintendo, for the same damn price (if this thing is priced around 250-350$) would have been an AMD Polaris semi-custom chip, with a CPU stronger than XBO/PS4, for a home console between PS4 and PS4 Pro level of performance.

This would have meant: easy port from current consoles (if the architecture Nintendo chooses isn't wonky), breathtakingly beautiful first-party games, a console capable of VR if Nintendo decides to do it in the future.

No wonder RDR2 isn't on Switch.
And it will be the same for Mass Effect Andromeda, and every other big multiplatform game.

Who would dump their PS4/XBox One just for a bunch of ports that could be gotten in systems they own already? And that's not even including the upgraded PS4 and XBox One that will be released in the near future. I've always said that Nintendo sticking with a PS3/360 level hardware with the Wii U was stupid, when they could have gotten the first next gen system back then, but this time it's far too late for just another console like that. The timing just wouldn't work. And to give any adequate support to that console they'd pretty much need to sacrifice their portable line up.

So what are we thinking, bundle wise? My guess:

Switch Basic Set: Tablet, Joy-Cons, Joy-Con grip (Japan only)

Switch Power Set: Control Set + Dock

Switch Deluxe Set: Control Set + Dock + Pro Controller

You may not use it, but people definitely will.

I actually think not. It will encourage kids to lean out of their restraints to see the tiny screen, which is positioned between the front seats. I think given how litigious the States is, people will be protected from their own stupidity.

The whole idea of having break away controllers is pretty cool, and I'm loving the overall design, but the inputs themselves seem a bit boring. Just buttons and analog sticks. Going the traditional route for the controllers may have been their best bet though, as far as inputs go. Hopefully we at least have gyro tech or something confirmed before launch. That seems safe enough.

People are paying attention because Nintendo has always set trends rather follow them. I'm not their biggest fan, but even I'm curious to see this new thing in action. 3DS is a beast. This looks even better.

Some people are still upset that Switch is not a Scorpion power console. They will get over it after the first rage. But unlike Scorpion Switch will most probably be a great success. People not deep into gaming news already speak about this thing. Something that never happened with Wii U.

A 299$ home console today is much more powerful than it was in 2013 for the same price.

The selling point could indeed be that on this device, ports are guaranteed 1080p 60fps, that it is VR ready, and that with the SCD patent, in the future, upgradability wouldn't be a problem at all to push 4K.

A lot can be done nowadays for quite cheap hardware to be frank.
