FFXV might receive additional PS4 Pro support post launch

Lighting seems much better in the short snippet of released pro footage, and that can be as easy as dialing some sliders up.

Well...

Top 2016 TGS trailer, bottom Polygon's 45 minute video.

Not saying it's PS4Pro footage, but it does look significantly different from stuff we're seeing from what outlets are labeling as 'final build of the game'. That much at least isn't placebo.

edit2: brightness/contrast settings, time of day, horrid youtube compression yadda yadda. Who knows until the game is out, really.

I think the main difference in this comparision is the time of the day, here's a cleaner picture from the uncompressed trailer:

We don't know if that TGS trailer was the standard PS4. Looking at the newest press footage, it probably wasn't.

I actually also don't think it was PS4 footage but captured on a PC but run with similar specs of a regular console. Same as with the Death spell trailer. Nothing there suggested it ran in a higher resolution or with any other improvements over consoles.

One scene of the TGS trailer that people called Pro footage and were comparing with older worse looking PS4 gameplay footage was Ardyn meeting the guys in Galdin Quay. There was nicer lighting (but it was a different time of day) and there were some additional shrubs on the hills behind Ardyn. In recent gameplay footage the PS4 version looks exactly like that and now also has the additional shrubs on the hills. They just really improved the console versions, that is all.

But you also didn't trust me when I said weeks ago there will be only 4K and HDR on Pro. :/

Hah! :P I told you guys we are not getting more than 4k and HDR and I told you guys that what you saw in this oh so great Pro footage was just a higher resolution and nothing more when everyone saw better lighting, foliage and LOD, lol.

You must have been sooo happy for a couple of minutes.

It is a completely different time of day. So the lighting is different and maybe a bit more flattering in the TGS trailer (of course they would choose the nicest lighting for a trailer, wouldn't they?). The assets and textures are the exact same though. Even the resolution is the exact same and the unfortunate hair dithering is the exact same also.

You must have been sooo happy for a couple of minutes.

Not really. I was just slightly relieved from being annoyed by months and months of people hyping the upcoming Pro mode. Seeing Pro footage everywhere and the Pro mode as the only saviour of this oh so fugly game. Guess what, the game does actually look good on the regular consoles too by now and the Pro mode does in fact only bring a better resolution. :)

Well fuck the PS4Pro then, cancelling that shit until Sony can actually prove there is a reason for it's existence other than being a PR piece.

We find out it does shit for past games and then we get some false deadline for "pro mode" and find out that it's pretty much up to Dev's to do anything with it.

I was only by a hair considering keeping the pro preorder over this game, and if it doesn't do shit for it why the hell would we want to buy a Pro which seems to only do magical things to far off first party games?!

Fuck by the time the pro gets proper support the PS5 will be released...

I don't see why they should bother? Devs are not obligated to take advantage of Pro past their launch patches, and even just locked 1080p, let alone checkerboard rendering would do wonders for IQ...the graphics themselves already look fine as is in the final build. I'm not sure what else they could upgrade.

Did you not listen? They will have a pro patch at launch utilizing the basics, higher resolution than PS4, better FPS ect.

But they are saying that they could potentially take further advantage of the specs with better graphical presets among other things later on.

Mind you, I'm PRETTY SURE it was a different time of day. In the bottom shot in my comparison (Polygon) the shadow cast by the building is on top of the 4 dudes. There's no way the highlights on the clothes would be similar to the top (TGS2016) when they're not even exposed to direct sunlight. Meaning the sun is at a completely different angle

What I was saying, if you look at the conversation I quoted off, I think that all else being equal whether it's on a different spec or not, people making that presumption that it was different from other PS4 footage shown aren't just operating off placebo.

With these IQ complaints i'm just guessing this must be some people's first console game. And as for this sudden controversy surrounding the Pro footage....people have already played the damn thing and said it looks significantly better. HDR, 4K, even more stable framerate, better IQ, with a future patch that will likely toggle better visuals.

What else were we expecting, exactly? This is probably the biggest game releasing on the eve of the PS4 Pro that's going to require a mandatory patch, and that's only because it got delayed 2 months past its release date, and thats only because it ran like shit.

Anyone who was expecting the Pro to deliver some mindblowing difference in graphical features at launch is just being delusional.

nope. You can stop panicking.

I highly doubt you're interested in the PS pro in the first place.

It has 4K + HDR support. Tabata is talking about taking "full advantage" of Pro like with the PC version, things like redoing the lighting on top of the base features which they don't have time to do right now. For Instance, Uncharted 4 has already released and it's currently "undergoing retooling ('they're taking another look at rendering strategies,' says Cerny)" since they have time to do it.

We don't know what the 1080p mode entails for XV, but if they already support 4K then downsampling that to 1080p wouldn't be hard to do.

He also says it is the best PS4P upgrade he has seen (maybe the only one truly worthwhile according to him ) ."
Thank you , this thread was about to go outta control.

Yup I get thet don't want to downplay the og ps4 version which thanks to the delay looks fantastic but at the same time gotta show potential customers what they're getting as well

They kind of don't though. SE doesn't get anything more out of you if you buy FFXV intending to play it on PS4 Pro. You just buy the game, and they get their money.

They want to sell everyone on buying FFXV at all. *Sony* wants you to want to buy a PS4 Pro, but SE couldn't care less.

Are you upset when PC players get nicer looking versions of their games too?

We still don't have official specifics on the Pro mode.

I'm not buying any of this crap until we have solid proof on release, I am so sick of nothing but rumours and speculation selling us nothing but garbage over and over again this gen.

Sony hasn't said shit about anything solid, and we get constant back and forth talk from the media.

I'll buy the Pro after it proves itself. It sounds like a great piece of technology but it's already a useless brick for older games, and newer ones are basically optional and let's face it, Dev's can't release working bug free games why would they want to put extra work in for anything.

Here's another take on the interview.

https://forum.finalfantasyxv.com/discussion/15839/why-tabata-do-not-show-off-ffxv-on-ps4-pro#latest

"It seems that, like the PC version, they weren't planning to do a PRO Patch at first (cause, you know, the original release was at September 30th without PRO features), so, in Tabata's words, to take advantage of PRO's features, they would need a lot of time that they don´t have right now.
But Tabata thinks that, after the release of the game, taking the time they need, they will be available to create a PRO patch that uses better PRO`s features.

The interviewer talks about 4KHDR and Tabata doesn't deny it, so, for now, 4KHDR is the unique feature of PRO version."

Well this is promising! I can see the 2014 level of iq coming back if this is true.

This!
Sony wants us to buy the Pro, Square Enix doesn't get much out of this though. 95+% of all FFXV players will play the game on the regular PS4 and Xbox One. Even their special FFXV bundles are just bundled with regular PS4s. (And so many people here were wondering why.)
It was obvious from the beginning that the Pro mode actually wasn't as high on their priority list as most people here, gushing day and night about the Pro and how it would save the game, thought.

But I'll stop for now. It seems I'm upsetting some guys here even more, which is not actually my intention. You know, I was planning to buy the Pro for FFXV too and now I am not so sure anymore...

Are you upset when PC players get nicer looking versions of their games too?

Yeah, I get it. I am just envious... >__>
I was/am going to buy the Pro too as I said.

Its up to devs to do anything. You think Scorpio will be any different? If you don't want to upgrade to these iterative units, do not do so. You don't have to cry about their existence.

Just because i also don't agree with them existing doesn't mean i cry about it.

I dont get why some people post the TGS PS Pro impressions as if they are some kind of gospel really...

Look i am hyped about FFXV myself but i dont let the hype render me completely blind to the obvious...

The fucking guy who directed this game said it plain and clear: " dont expect any improvements for the PS Pro". (apart from 4khdr)

Its simply, really.

Now all these guys who were amazed by the awesomeness of PS Pro footage? They were actually amazed at 4k resolution. Nothing more, or maybe also a bit of placebo as well. Guess what 4k makes everything look better, crisper etc.

I am sorry but acting as if what the creator of the game said, is bullshit and that a bunch of guys without any sort of on the spot comparison or measuring equipment, are more credible is ridiculous. Those guys were hyped as fuck probably like all of us and thought that Pro version was crazy upgraded.

Its not. And the sooner people deal with it and express their disappointement over this then, perhaps, the sooner a proper patch will be ddveloped for Pro.

That's fine. I can play the game on the Pro anyway and see the first wave of small changes they're making. If or when the time comes and they release a new patch with better upgrades then I'll play it then too. It's not like I have the time to finish the game in a week or 2 haha. Either way I'm excited cause the game comes out in about a month. One more month.

I'm confused. Tabata is saying not to expect any improvements while having already shown an improved version (higher resolution) at TGS?

So which is it?

This. I'm still on the fence about buying it for horizon honestly. During all the leaks a year ago I was in the o no I don't want this crap camp. Thought it would screw over og ps4 owners but now with info out its not doing that at all. Its literally just an upgrade for those that want it. Its that simple, devs will either do the most or the least and at the end of the day the ps4 still has to be the lead development. Nothing to complain about really. If people don't want it fine but if people do want the thing for specific games let them and on top of that if a developer says there will be an upgrade yes they absolutely should show it off whether they're selling the console or not

I'm actually really happy they managed to make the game look this good on the base PS4
Then there's also this looks really good regardless. Seems to be running better as well. No worries from me

That's fine. For me even if it was only downsampled (so less jaggies, if at all) and steady fps, i would consider it a huge reason. Anything else like better lighting, better textures, more vegetation, Better effects, better shadows, etc would be a bonus.

Will the game look and play better on a PS4 Pro connected to a 4KTV than a regular PS4 connected to the same? From what I've read, it will and the debate is "how much?". Is that right?

If so, I'm content with my decisions for having sold the old PS4 and then purchasing a PS4 Pro and then FFXV upon launch of both.

If not, I might wait on both to see if there's any worthwhile deals to snag this holiday season.
I likely won't because I'm impatient but it's the smart thing to do

Guessing by the time a Pro patch would come out that I'd be already done. At that point I'd likely just wait for a PC version to come out. Ah well :/

Exactly what i said a few posts above. It will be kind of pointless to release a proper Pro patch 5-6 months down the line, assuming they even bithrr with it based on what Tabata says. Even so, by then it will be too late, could be fun maybe for a new playthrough but the whole wow factor will be long gone...

Well if nobody complains and everyone just gobbles up the PR bullshit the cycle of screwing us over will never end.

In any case I'm done, I've clearly expressed my dissapointment so there's not much else to say.

On the bright side it seems like riding out the Original PS4 might be worth it in the long run and Sony can shove their 4k TV sales drive up their asses.

I'm just happy to be able to play the game after this long. If they patch it down the road, that will be great for a second playthrough if I liked it the first time.

You seen overly mad about an optional upgrade console

This seems a bit dramatic. We already know the Pro version is improved from the people who have seen it.

Developer doesn't inspire confidence in the one game I care about for PRO, plus the base version now looks way better than the so called master build.

How is that dramatic? I think it's pretty reasonable logic.

So it just like I thought it would be. SE had no time to develop a Pro patch.

They were among the first to receive devkits.

There will be a Pro patch, like the rest of the games coming out in October/November.

Even some that came out in August/September, including Square-Enix's own Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

This is what might kill the pro. There is a lack of standardization or Guarantee that you'll get any improvements if you dont have a 4k TV.

The pro's potential will not be taken full advantage of.The signs are on the wall.

It's not like they have any other choice with the release date they have being so close to Pro's launch and they're still working on the base versions. The only games that we currently know will have extra rendering features on top of just 4K/HDR are games that released some months ago, or will release 5-6+ months from now. Rise of the Tomb Raider being the oddball that just released but they probably had their PS4 version done a while ago given the MS 1-year exclusive deal. Many Pro games announced we only know of the basic 4K/HDR support.

You seen overly mad about an optional upgrade console

I was looking forward to a boost in performance overall, but finding out that the whole thing is a half assed attempt for more money is really disheartening.

It's not saving this guy from migrating to PC to say the least lol

I'm not mad, I know it comes across that way, just seems like a relief in some ways since it saves me over $500 Canadian to just ignore it even exists.

Hopefully once we see some solid proof things might change but it's not looking very hot right now for it's asking price, don't get me wrong for someone just buying their first PS4 it's likely a much better proposition

Things sure turned around from the perception of "original PS4 version of XV is broken, and the real way to experience XV is on a Pro"...

...to "the real way to experience XV is on a standard PS4, and Pro doesn't do much at launch".

As someone who bought PS4 at launch pretty much to play XV, I'm obviously fine with this. Frankly I felt a little insulted that my first time play through of XV would be the significantly lesser experience. Now Pro gives an enhanced experience for those who play XV later down the line? Great.

Pretty much my thoughts on the matter as well. Fortunately the base version seems to be the primary focus.

Yup I think I can go along with that mindset.

We don't know if that TGS trailer was the standard PS4. Looking at the newest press footage, it probably wasn't.

The iq in the TGS trailer was pretty bad though. There is just no way that is expected of the ps4 pro. Not that amount of nasty hair without aa. And when the taa kicks in it becomes blurry.

It just straight up looks bad in motion on ps4. This shouldn't be a problem running on the pro, even supersampling will do wonders to the hair. I would imagine on ps4 pro the hair would get close to their 8xmsaa+fxaa implementation in the agnis philosophy demo.

So, going off these impressions, there definitely IS a PS4 Pro mode and owners will get to play FFXV in 4K and HDR with a, quite likely, steadier framerate than the standard at the very least.

What are people disappointed about exactly?

Great post by the way.
