Will PS4 Pro actually be worth it without a 4K TV?

From what I have read and seen from Sony, it seems like the advantages of PS4 Pro are better suited for a 4K TV with HDR. But what about those of us that don't have a 4K TV? Will it be worth it?

Sorry if this has already been answered, I couldn't find another thread.
Lock and mock me if so.

From all accounts there's options for developers.

If you have 1080p, then they could render at 4K and downsample to give a cleaner image and any performance improvements will carry over, even in 1080p mode.

Based on marketing, it really doesn't sound like it. And you have to assume that if it was a meaningful upgrade for 1080p users, marketing *would* point that out.

It's already pretty clear the reason they went for 4K instead of 60 FPS was because the CPU just isn't up to snuff even after the overclock.

I have a 4K TV with HDR and I can't answer the more fundamental question 'Is PS4 Pro worth it?'

Preordered, but hoping for pre-release impressions, especially with Switch being a definite Day One purchase.

It'll feature more stable and/or higher framerates, but this is totally up to the developers and we don't know what the minimum requirement for Pro support is (at least I don't think we do yet).

Just wait for it to come out and read up on hands on reviews

This is absolutely one of those things where you are far better off waiting on actual impressions from usage on a 1080p screen based on a game built or patched to support the PS4 Pro, it is unlikely this will be a high-demand console so initial stock shouldn't be a big concern.

I'd say it is if we're getting this level of clean iq at 1080p

they say it will be. reality is we don't really know how big of an improvement it will be or how often we'll see it in game releases (it's developer choice) hell, we haven't even see the bells and whistles version of tomb raider yet.

You will find out in 2-3 years when the first pro exclusive games will be released.

won't happen. but in 3 years we'll have a PS5 anyway

I feel like i've said it like a billion times already, people can't be doing this without knowing..

It depends on what you want from the machine OP, just like any other console.

What do you expect from it and what are you worried is the reality?

better frame rater for some games. I see it like an alternative to PC upgrade too...

for the price of a trade of a PS4 it's a no brainer for me. I'm going PS4 Pro on a 1080 tv

"Is it worth it to upgrade my GPU to a faster one even if I'm using my old monitor?"
With PC games you'll have all your old games adapt to the faster hardware. From what it looks like that won't be the case with the pro unless the dev patches the game

Games will look a bit better. Is this enough for you? If not, then no. If it is, then yes.
(For example -> See Tomb Raider on PS4)

Answer enough?

Yes. Even with pure downsampling, the effect on IQ is tremendous. Plus many games are adding additional features for 1080p.

Yes, I think so. I sold my standard ps4 in anticipation for this.

We are too early on to see how it will be utilized but one thing we know for sure is that it will be. Give it some time. To me, any improvement is an improvement and for the amount of time I use my ps4 that alone is worth it.

I would say yes if you are new to PS4.

No, if you still have have a regular PS4

Yes, if you have money to burn

You know that that's not really the point here, right? Unpatched games wouldn't look better on a 4K TV either.

Some games will go a step above and actually improve the graphics to make the game look even better.

The new call of duty running on ps4 pro doesn't look too bad either.

Are you saying every game is 1080p down sampled even without patches ?

No, they mean any game that has a mode for 4Kish resolution, will downsample the image on a 1080p display, unless the devs opt for multiple modes you can select like Tomb Raider.

The main push will be for '4K', same as Microsoft. You will get some nice down-sampling I suppose to improve image quality, so it wouldn't be all to waste.

I can't see too many devs going full on though in optimising for 3 modes. '4K' Pro, 1080p Pro and OG PS4. I think the 'middle' option will be largely ignored.

Hell most games are hardly well optimised right now. Expecting them to get it right for basically 3 hardware specs is wishful thinking IMO.

If I didn't own a PS4 already, I'd consider the Pro to be a no-brainer simply on the grounds that its more future proof than the OG model, and that you get a lot more potential power and performance (not to mention a bigger HDD) for a relatively small premium.

I was asking seriously OP, what do you want from the device, and what are you expecting that you are concerned about?

"Is it worth it to upgrade my GPU to a faster one even if I'm using my old monitor?"

this not at all the same thing actually, if a game doesn't have Pro support (The Witcher 3 for example) it will run exactly like on the OG PS4, frame rate issues included, if it does have a Pro mode with checkerboard you will get a image composed by two 1080p framebuffers, so 2X SSAA, if it also has a specific mode for 1080p displays with higher settings you will have that

I plan to buy one. Games should still hopefully run better, even at 1080p (hopefully more stable frame rate than OG PS4). Eventually I will get a 4K TV. I'm just waiting to see if anyone does a decent trade in promo.

Its not worth the risk of Pre-Ordering. I am going to wait to see some reviews of games I want to play....

Yeah this seems like the most reasonable course of action. It's just weird though. Feels like there has been a lot of silence on this. Most people have 1080 TVs so I'm not sure why Sony wouldn't be showing off the improvements (if any) to games that support it.
