With Apple pushing USB Type-C with the new MacBook Pro's, I think it would be interesting to speculate what Apple may have planned for the iPhone 8 in 2017. Linked above is the rumour roundup for the device.

Could Apple be ready to ditch the Lightning cable for something more universal? I hope so considering that they co-developed the standard with Intel.

Thoughts?

I kind of feel like USB C as the main connector would be a backup if the blowback from removing the 3.5mm jack was more pronounced.

I guess though they are probably running out of really exciting new selling points and usb-c is pretty neat

he's what i'm thinking:

-shit battery life

that's all i've got so far, i'll keep updating this post as we get closer to launch

I don't think they'll switch to USB C,

But they might include a USB C to lightning in the box (and a USB C to Standard USB adapter if they are nice enough).

When they removed the headphone jack, they should've just switched directly to USB-C from the start.

The Macbooks are using USB-C, but the iPhones aren't. What?

So now you have a situation where you can't use the same set of headphones on both a Macbook and an iPhone without somesort of adapter. It's crazy IMO.

changing to usb c next year would be colossally stupid after the whole 3.5m->lightning fiasco

"remember those shitty dongles you bought last year? rebuy them all again this year!"

You can't even buy a 7+ reliably still lol. Would be funny if the 8 has usb c and adds back the headphone jack lol, market it as a new feature, "now with a headphone jack." it really took a lot of courage for us to add this.

Not to mention you can't even charge your iPhone on the new Macbooks without an adapter. So you'd have to carry around two adapters...

iPhone 8:
-Better camera
-Better performance
-Thinner
-Better display
-Touch ID on screen
-Siri update
-Apple VR

Also:
-Apple Watch 3 (See above for new points)

I think the phone vr fad will pretty much be dead by the time the 8 comes out. Otherwise yeah pretty much.

Although going much thinner will actually hurt usability imo.

If they make the screen the entire phone, I am seriously going to skip it. Apple has become just worse and worse over the years. If I upgrade, I'll get a 6S+ at least than I'll have a headphone option.

The next iPhone has to be a slab of ceramic thats mold around the motherboard.
+water resistant to 50ft.
Only way to make me forget about the Aux fiasco.

As always, I am expecting beautiful, impressive hardware running an OS you couldn't pay me to use.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see Apple start including AirPods for free with iPhones, but probably not until 2018 or so.

They can't go to USB type C, they'd look like absolute fools, when they just removed the headphone jack this year. They're far too invested in proprietary connectors and dongles.

They're not switching to USB-C; I just can't see the big advantage. Every switch of connector is massively disruptive to their customers, who buy a whole ecosystem of accessories that support the connector. And they're certainly not going to do it for the benefit of wired audio, as they obviously consider having a port/cable for audio at all to be a temporary bridge to the inevitable mostly-wireless future.

Did I miss something? Are they skipping the 7S next year?

Regardless of the name, the 7 is highly iterative of the 6 and 6S. And the current rumors are that next years phone will be a major redesign. Assuming that's true, it seems unlikely that they'd brand it as "7S", and would be more likely to break their naming pattern.

IPhone 8, now with even more dongles included in the box. Now you get a usb c headphone jack adapter and a usb c to lighting adapter! Isn't that awesome!

Literally this wouldn't be any different than removing the headphone jack on the 7 so I don't see why people see it as unlikely. If you have lightning headphones you would just use an adapter. Its the exact same scenario as the 7.

Very courageous to move to usb c.

*shrug*

we've seen apple wildly reduce the price of things before after extracting a lot of money from their biggest diehards. see the original iphone for example. i think apple wants wireless audio to be the norm, rather than a luxury. they'll keep selling Beats headphones as the 'luxury' version of the idea, most likely.

I bet the "premium" version with the fancy screen will be sold as an "Anniversary Edition" and it'll be the version with the hardware features you actually want like the curvy OLED screen.

how much do you want to bet, i'll put down $100 this won't happen.

They'll eventually switch to USB C but with the 2018 iPhone at the earliest. I doubt they want to take flak from people who bought Lightning Beats or whatever other headphones are available.

On the other hand it's nothing an included adapter wouldn't solve, and Bluetooth/ W1 is what they're pushing, not wired Lightning headphones.

It's hard to say what the best option would be, and mind-boggling they went with the awkward Lightning sidetrack on the obvious route to USB C.

It'll happen. Not in the next couple years, and it may be a gimped set so they can continue selling a premium version, but it'll happen at some point. I wouldn't be surprised if some Android manufacturers start bundling wireless headphones in the next year or two.

they just switched over to lightning only port on iPhones and released the lightning EarPods. They make money and control accessories w/ the lightning port. They aren't ditching it.

Yeah, I think it's likely to be a gimped version (or, rather, the 1st-gen version, while they'll be selling a two-years-newer version with offline music storage and better battery life or whatever at roughly the same $160 price point).
I doubt they'll be giving away a headphone they're currently charging $160 for for free

for historical precedent, look at their old 'premium' $90 in-ear headphones vs the original free-with-your-phone ear buds; eventually they killed both with the improved earpods that come with the phone for free today, and the earpods (while still obviously cheap) are better than the in-ear-headphones were

A USB-C port is double the size of a Lightning port. Given how thin the phones are now, and their likely intention to make them even thinner, there's no good way to replace Lightning with USB-C without compromising the structural integrity of that part of the phone.

I'd really prefer them to push wireless charging instead.
