iPhone 8 speculation

Why is everyone convinced we'll get iPhone 8 next year instead of iPhone 7s and have another year of the same form factor?

This IS Tim Cook's Apple we're talking about here. They haven't innovated in a while. :/
It's just easier to signify as the next major upgrade upgrade because of Apple's shitty naming scheme. As soon as you add the "S," because of Apple's Plus, SE and (former) C lines, it takes a bit longer to figure out what phone you're actually talking about so to make it easier everyone just says iPhone 8. Plus the full number jump is supposed to signify bigger jumps too, or at least it was supposed to once upon a time.

I think Apple has had a few decent ideas under Tim Cook, but I'm not sure if their lack of ambition or inspiring products is attributable to him or him being stuck with having to iterate on multiple product lines that were in their infancy before Jobs passed. Probably a little bit of both.

Clicked to learn about OLEDs, but ended up getting more excited about this Micro-LED technology.

Sucks if the OLED is relegated to only 5.5 inch units, but I'm really skeptical that they would offer more than 2 SKUs in the first place.

A USB-C port is double the size of a Lightning port. Given how thin the phones are now, and their likely intention to make them even thinner, there's no good way to replace Lightning with USB-C without compromising the structural integrity of that part of the phone.

I'd really prefer them to push wireless charging instead.
Inductive charging isn't wireless.

You know, in the old days an exec that leaked info about future Apple plans would suddenly find themselves no longer a partner with Apple. Tim is definitely a different CEO than Steve was.

Apple needs specific screen suppliers and *everyone* on that side of the chain are leaking details anyway. They can't plug the boat so may as well just let everybody roll with their rumors and keep the truth to themselves.

It's nice of Sharp to say things but realistically Apple probably has 3-4 prototype models and backup plans in the works at any one time. There's really nothing stopping Apple from using LCD or mLED next year. Hell it could literally be the 7S and look identical to the current model. I'd wait on seeing actual manufacturing component leaks before I take anybody's word to the bank.

I just think that's a really hard sell with them pushing either wireless or Lightning headphones and other accessories right now. I mean they hype of an incredible redesign could overshadow that, but it would be a big hit, IMO.

EDIT: I'll ask a very uneducated question and hope not to be mocked, but how different are the plugs/ports for USC-C and Lightning? By that I mean, could they somehow engineer one port that could fit both plugs? That would be an interesting move, if it's possible. Just not sure it would fit in an iPhone frame if it even was technically possible.

People keep saying Apple is pushing Lightning earphones, they were pushing the Airbuds more than anything else.

Yeah, lightning is only there for when you have no choice but to use a wire like for charging, or for those who for some reason or other are not ready to adopt the wireless future.

At minimum an introductory OLED strip a la MacBook, but really derived from the V10/V20. Then later full OLED.

I Like this idea!

Also ill just add that i dont think youre supposed to plug an ios device into a computer anymore. From Apples point of view at least. Kinda been that way for a while too. They may not view the cable incompatibility as an issue.

Too early to take the "Multiple phones" rumors seriously since the same thing was said in regards to the iPhone 7 Plus/iPhone 7 Pro up to launch. Way too much misinformation that gets spread simply to attract clicks.

Definitely too early but the rumor has always been 3 phones coming out at the end of 2017

I would much rather them just delay the the redesigned phone until they can launch the whole line up with the same design. I hate that they have been giving the Plus models exclusive features, and it would suck for next years phone to be the only one with the redesign.

They should either launch the anniversary models - Mini, Normal and Plus (with colours and features consistent across models) next year, or they should stall for a year and first release a 7S series.

That said, I think Apple's first priority would be to release the anniversary models in 2017, and these rumours are likely just additional designs (ala the rumoured Plus model with a smart connector) incase the anniversary models need more time. With that in mind I am predicting the following:

  • Apple launches new Mini, Regular and Plus phones, all with the rumoured anniversary design.
  • Apple drops the iPhone name for the new models.
OR

  • Apple release iPhone 7S with new colours alongside a slightly updated SE (they would just call it the "New SE").
  • The SE would come in actual black, plus whatever new colour the 7S launches in.
  • Slight price drop for the new SE (and maybe the rest of the phones).
  • Apple follows up in 2018 with the original plan.
Also, I really think they will drop the iPhone branding. The "phone" part of the branding has long misrepresented what most people actually use it for (I would bet most peoples screen time on the phone is doing something other than calling people). I also seem to remember watching an interview with someone at Apple echoing these thoughts. Though I don't expect them to do this until the redesign.
