iPhone 8 speculation

When they removed the headphone jack, they should've just switched directly to USB-C from the start.

The USB-C/USB 3.1 audio/headphone standard wasn't finalized until after the iPhone 7 was released (and the USB-C->HDMI video standard was released around the same time). Apple could have released the iPhone 7 with a proprietary USB-C solution (which arguably would have been worse) or stuck with the 3.5mm jack for another year (which would have come at the cost of battery capacity, waterproofing, and/or the non-mechanical home button).

I think Apple should have pushed harder on wireless audio years ago so that removing the 3.5mm jack would have been easier on the 7 (thereby allowing a smoother eventual transition to USB-C in 2017/2018), but hindsight's 20/20.

The Macbooks are using USB-C, but the iPhones aren't.

The old Macbooks were using USB-A, but the iPhones weren't. Apart from the headphones (vis a vis the iPhone 7) and charging, this isn't really relevant.

I think we have the Lightning connector until the iPhone comes without a connector. Jonny Ive and Tim Cook have stated multiple times that AirPods are just a step towards the wireless image they have for the phone. It'll probably stick around until induction charging comes into play.

I wonder if they fast-track the announcement of the new iPhone to sometime in June to better coincide with the tenth anniversary of the iPhone.

Things I expect in the next iPhone.... I think we'll finally get that edge-to-edge display, also suspect we'll lose the home button. The new MacBook Pro has a Touch ID Sensor integrated into the display... I think we'll see that innovation make its way to the iPhone. Other than that, faster, better camera, all the same shit you'd expect from an update.

sounds like a great way to sell more accessories.

they can even bullet point it to being about cross compatibility and standardization etc and they will be defended like Evo Moment #37

Apple loves Lightning because of all the money they made from licensing it, but a USB-C world is what makes the most sense in the coming years. If everything actually started to use USB-C, folks wouldn't mind the new MacBook Pro as much - except for its insane price, of course.

Lightning's gotta die, whether it's a year from now or 3. It's a major pain point now.

Yep. Apple's not going to (from their perspective) gimp the quality of their products just in order to get accessory revenues; that's backwards when the revenue from the products themselves is so much higher. You don't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. The headphone jack thing is much less about getting accessory revenues/DRM than it's about Jony Ive being a slightly obsessive nutbar who has too much clout within Apple for anyone to say no to his vision, and also some genuine engineering victories tied to eliminating the headphone jack.

I think USB-C offers enough general power controls, as well, that Apple could count on a generic USB-C cable not frying an iPhone, whereas some unlicensed third-party Lightning cables will do just that. Not having a review process for the accessories would probably save Apple some money.

A USB-C port is double the size of a Lightning port. Given how thin the phones are now, and their likely intention to make them even thinner, there's no good way to replace Lightning with USB-C without compromising the structural integrity of that part of the phone.

I'd really prefer them to push wireless charging instead.

HA if anyone needs evidence of Apple NEVER going USB-C, here it is. Apple cares more about the thinness of the phone over anything.

I feel like Apple has painted themselves into a corner here. With all their Macs moving to USB-C, but iOS devices still coming with USB proper, and none of the machines even having an adapter out of the box, and iOS devices still using Lightning, which is similar to USB-C connector wise but is not compatible in the slightest which will potentially confuse a lot of people who have USB-C to Lightning cables, and new iPhone 7s coming with Lightning headphones... They can't just remove the Lightning and they can't replace it. And they can't include USB-C cables in the iPhone boxes instead because a lot of people will still have normal USB. And if they went wireless completely, then you have people who now have no way to use their non-wireless headphones at all even with adapters (Someone will make a case, guaranteed. Maybe even Apple for $99.) and Apple sure aint gonna include $130 wireless headphones in the box. They'd make some cheaper non-smart wireless headphones with worse technology, no automatic syncing, less battery life and no charging case to include in the box. Which is something I can't see them doing, so the Lightning is here to stay for a while.

They should have transitioned slower. Put a USB-C port on their machines with normal USB for a few iterations. Kept the headphone jack on the iPhone for at least one generation but pushed for wireless headphones. But they didn't because they knew people wouldn't move onto their wireless vision. But it can't be wireless if we still have Lightning for charging.

It's gonna be a mess for a while.

I'm a fool.
Hey, I didn't know it either. But looking closer at the "About TouchBar" portion of the MBP page on Apple's site I see that there is indeed a separated partition. Which explains why there's a symmetrical empty area on the left side as well pushing the Escape "key" and other buttons over. You'll notice nothing ever gets close enough to the left edge. Because Apple wouldn't want it to look offset. So they waste space on the left since it's empty on the right.

Hopefully at least the left most button's tappable area still expands into this empty space so people who hit Escape (When it's an available option) habitually won't be constantly missing it.

I hope Lightning is replaced by USB-C. It seems like it will be, as Apple has gone all in on their devices with USB-C.

The timing will be rough for consumers because they'll think Apple is intentionally replacing their connectors to make people pay money for adapters and new devices, but the truth is, Lightning probably shouldn't have been introduced anyway when Lightning and USB-C were really only 1 full iPhone iteration apart (e.g., a full numbered release)

wait... Apple sells a lightning to USB-C cable right now...

http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0X2AM/A/usb-c-to-lightning-cable-1-m

why again would they remove the lightning port??

To be fair, they were selling wired ear buds in 2015.

here's another wrinkle, currently all of Apple's Keyboards, Mice, AND the Apple TV remote all use lightning as well
Yep.

It's like they wanted Lightning to be the future. But couldn't convince Intel to go with a compatible design, nor would it have been possible anyway.

I want the all USB-C future so badly, but Lightning is just such a roadblock. It can't go away now. Unless they switch the keyboard, trackpad and mouse and remote all to USB-C stealthily.

I don't think I follow.

everyone is saying in here that Apple MUST be moving to USB-C on the next iPhone because the new Macs only have USB-C ports. All they need to do is pack in a Lightning to USB-C cable going forward.

Whatever the case may be, I want thin bezels. I could give a crap about USB-C as I'm not buying a MacBook any time soon.

I don't see C becoming a standard any time soon tbh.

- Lightning Port

- OLED Display with overall 90%+ screen to body ratio

- SOC that easily outstrips anything on the market (again...)

- VR

Lightning came out in 2012. USB-C -- the design of which was largely influenced by Lightning -- had its initial release in 2014, but didn't have standardized support for audio and HDMI video until a few weeks ago (in 2016).

Four years is a heck of a long time in the mobile world. Using the 30-pin port for that whole time -- losing out on the advantages of Lightning -- would have been very painful.

Apple is too stubborn to drop lightning, and I feel like they'll start bundling lightning adapters with Macs before they give up all the money they lose on licensing lightning accessories.

I hope I'm wrong, but I can't imagine the fallout from Apple forcing people to buy new headphones AGAIN after this year.

Man, how can a company fuck up this bad. I expected better checks and balances and product planning from Apple.

.....why? The best Android phone (Pixel) is USB-C already, I think Apple probably would've used USB-C if it was finalized in 2012 for the iPhone 5.

USB-C is the future and even Apple acknowledges it, I would bet the over on the iPhone 8 being USB-C.

No way 3.5 jack is coming back. iPhone 7 broke records for sales like every year and apple doesnt back track on stuff. The lightning adapter will either stay or they will use USB type c if it can also be used as the audio jack. Don't forget quick charge is pretty much guaranteed at this point for iPhone 8 so do we know if lightning can support that?

USB-C is nice and all, but what perk will it give Apple to switch from lightning to it in the case of the iPhone/Low data peripherals. Essentially all these lightning devices Apple makes send data wirelessly and only use the lightening cable for charging. What peripherals for smartphones are USB-C currently? Headphones? For PC for that matter, aside from some external drives that iPhone will never support.

If the port on the iPhone serves no purpose but to charge and send audio to those not willing to invest in BT headphones yet, seems pretty unrealistic to expect Apple to change to something else.

Considering the push in their current Macbook lineup (Air notwithstanding) maybe there's a possibility to change to an USB-C port, but the Lightning certification revenue may be too good to pass on.

All rumors point to a major redesign for the next one, and it makes sense considering they are pushing 3 years on the 6 design. The 7 was a stopgap until the next one - the biggest change in its innards was purely cosmetic, as the space left by the 3.5 mm connector is not used in the current flagship in a meaningful way - to normalize the situation surrounding the headphones before the anniversary model.

As for specs, I see Apple finally using an OLED and reducing the bezels. Probably a 16 MP camera and wireless charging capability; I just hope they reconsider a little their obsession with thinness and get rid of that unsightly camera hump.

- iPhone 10th Anniversary 24k Gold Edition with a laser engraved portrait of Steve Jobs on the back + sigs of design team

- No-bezel display with Touch Bar for quick actions like the MBP
- holographic AR tech
- advanced taptic engine which simulates the feel of surfaces (keys, height changes, etc)
- plus some other expected stuff

Why is everyone convinced we'll get iPhone 8 next year instead of iPhone 7s and have another year of the same form factor?

This IS Tim Cook's Apple we're talking about here. They haven't innovated in a while. :/

I honestly want them to go nuts, and just remove every port from the thing. 100% wireless, from data to charging. Make it one waterproof slab of futuristic bullshit.

At least that'd be a bold move, instead of the idiotic anti-consumer half-steps they've been taking.

I just think that's a really hard sell with them pushing either wireless or Lightning headphones and other accessories right now. I mean they hype of an incredible redesign could overshadow that, but it would be a big hit, IMO.

EDIT: I'll ask a very uneducated question and hope not to be mocked, but how different are the plugs/ports for USC-C and Lightning? By that I mean, could they somehow engineer one port that could fit both plugs? That would be an interesting move, if it's possible. Just not sure it would fit in an iPhone frame if it even was technically possible.

HA if anyone needs evidence of Apple NEVER going USB-C, here it is. Apple cares more about the thinness of the phone over anything.

Don't you have phones that are thinner than the iPhone, which use usb-c? I'm looking at my iPhone next to my Axon 7 and the port definitely doesn't look anywhere near twice the size.

Literally the only thing they're basing it on is that it'll be the 10th anniversary, and it doesn't seem right to make a special phone be an S model, plus the fact that the 7 was just a much better 6 design-wise. Those are the only reasons.

I won't believe anything about a 10th Anniversary iPhone until the real information and case designs start leaking.

Not possible. Lightning is 8 pins per side with an exposed (male) connector. USBC is 12 pins per side over a smaller area, but the male connector is covered by a metal shield (the plug) that gives it more volume and protects the tiny pins inside.

Part of the reason why Lightning was ready first is that it's electrically much easier to build.
