Buying a 4K TV for PS4K thread!

Edge lighting typically does that. The curve in screens even OLEDS (which don't share the problem obviously) is a stupid fucking gimmick that barely improved viewing angle at the expense of the user, increased costs, lack of backlighting and reduced local dimming capabilities. The potential quality of the TV is reduced typically by the curved screen.

But it looks cool right!

Definitely worth it.

Me too. Thought about reduced input lag as soon as I saw the tweet, and got excited. If they get the 4k + HDR input lag at ~40 ms or less, I'll buy one. Input lag is the only thing stopping me from buying an OLED right now.

The thread on AVS forums worries me, though. Still, if that's true, then what is Vincent hinting at? Hopefully the article will be published tomorrow.

Yeah I too would rather have a flat display than a curved one.

i see... should i take mine back and get the flat then? I would have to wait a week, but if the flat is better.
 
From a mostly gaming perspective what should I know regarding the LG B6/C6? I'm trying to decide if I want one of those sets or the KS800.

I watch TV and play games almost always in darkness so it has to look good in dark environments. I watch a fair amount of TV shows/movies as well as sports. I do not play fast paced action or shooters (mostly RPG's and action/adventure, but even though can those have fast real time battle systems--for instance I'll be buying Horizon: Zero Dawn and Neir which falls into those category).

I'll be using a PS4 Pro on this set and well as older generation consoles (PS3, Wii/Wii U) if that makes any difference.

I worry about IR on OLED, but it seems it's not bad if you're not a complete idiot and leave a game paused.

Is the ABL on the LG sets going to pose a problem for me?

Buy now for a nice 4K HDR set that will do fine at a decent price, or wait until CES for a peek at what is coming up, then wait for spring for sets to start rolling out, then wait until autumn for prices to drop to reasonable levels?

Ages old dilemma - buy stuff now or wait for something better which is always just few months away.

I personally think it's better to get semi decent HDR 4K display for 1k Euro or so now and then safely wait until proper well made OLEDs hit those price ranges.

Problem is TV's are a bit special. Because they are so expensive and generally a luxury item that isn't in particularly high demand second hand it's hard to turn around and sell TV's above a certain price threshold to recuperate some of your loss.

If you don't necessarily see any issues and the price was better, probably not? Just saying, almost every single time I have noticed, the curved has struggled against flat. Even when the curved is perfect, it has some backlighting issues, cloudiness due to the curve than the flat. But like others have posted, their tv have no issues. So if yours does not either, enjoy it.

I think it all comes down to if you can get a set at a discount price tbh.

It is still a new tech as you said.
 
Is there a good way to "break in" a new TV? What I mean is, not specifically settings but do you turn it on and keep it on for a while the first time it's plugged in or have a certain setting on for a while or keep the TV sitting upright for a little while before turning it on for the first time etc. Just wondering.

You dont need to break in led tvs.

I have heard of using a TV for a while before trying to calibrate it.

Think so too. Could be 2-3 years for that, and a £1k 55" 4K HDR set is decent value for me (I remember paying over £2k for a 30" 768p LCD)

But if Sony trickle their master backlight tech down to the mid-high range..
 
It's insane how fast the Vizio P fell off the gaming planet. I didn't think 40ms higher lag than the ks8000 would make it never mentioned again as viable for gaming.

My tv is a 720p Samsung plasma from about 6 years ago so I'm thinking the X800D should blow me away. I also want to buy an OLED in about 4-5 years so I wanted something decent to hold me over.

This will happen soon enough. I will wait and in the meantime.. enjoy supersampling on my 1080p Panny plasma. By next year tv will be cheaper and Dynamic Metadata via HDMI 2.1 might come in very handy.

And...if I buy a 'cheaper' set now, I know I'm gonna regret. I'll get a better set for the same amount next year.

Damn..... Was hoping for lower input lag. Disappointing, to say the least.

Looks like I'll buy a KS8000.

You'll be blown away then. I also want an OLED but i know its not the right time to buy one. At least not worth it at the price its at now.

I came from a 1080p LG TV that did its good service but then a fuse blew out. I didn't believe in upgrading just yet to 4k or HDR, tho the tech really caught my attention. With the idea of getting a new TV i made it a point to invest in something good. This one so far has been totally worth it. I use it with my PC, XB1S, PS4 (pro to come) and wiiU. No issues. Finally got around to see some 4K BR and they look oustanding. Streaming in 4k and HDR also looks really good. Watched some tv shows from Amazon that use it like Bosch and Red Oaks. Upgraded my Netflix to have 4k streams too. So far i don't regret it. I actually got the XB1S so i could have a 4k player. But, looking back, all my games, including 360 will now play on a scaled up 4k display, and the TV does an amazing job and keeping it together. Either way.... i probably would know better if i had previously owned a high end TV. But the money i spent for what i got back has been great.
 
I went all in yesterday and ordered a UE65KS9590 (US KS9800) with the actual Samsung Superdeal here in Germany. Buy the TV register it and receive a free Galaxy S7 Edge. Bought the Xbox One S today and next week the PS4 Pro will complete the full 4K/HDR experience.
 
I'm torn.

If I buy the PS4 Pro then I'm gonna want to buy a nice new 4K HDR set to go with it.

But if I do that I'm gonna need a 4K HDR blu-ray player as well!

So I'd probably have to suck it up and buy the Xbox One S as it's a decently priced 4K player.

And I'm a super casual gamer these days anyway and don't really have time for 2 consoles. So why would I keep my PS4 Pro?


Aaaagh Sony making this decision so hard if only they had added 4K blu ray support.... :(

It's funny, I'm buying a Pro, but Sony singlehandedly made me buy an XB1S as well as I was in market for a UHD BD player
 
Sony dun goofed with the no UHD support. They of all people should have known consoles were a great way to get sales and introduce a format ala PS2 and DVD, PS3 and blu-ray. So many 4k owners who would never buy Xbox are looking at an Xbox One S for $299 or less and using it for UHD 4k and HDR playback, soon to be bitstream Atmos support.

I saw Star Trek UHD, my god. One look will completely make you say fuck streaming, and want to build a 4K disc collection. Cannot wait to see 4k remasters of movies with HDR support.

KS8000 much better than X800D here. But as you can price is almost double. Only you can decide whether it is worth it. But if you are coming from a 720p plasma, hoo boy, the 4K ans HDR of X800D will make you wonder why you never upgraded sooner. More than capable enough even with IPS. Again though, if you are also the type to not want to upgrade for a while, it may also be worth it to spend more and get the KS8000 and have it tide you over until 2020 or whatnot.
 
Buying a ps4k and a 4k tv Def has me lost as a consumer.

Not being able to play 4k physical media without upgrading my Xbox to an S is fricken stupid.

I don't even think it's that... KS8000 prices dropped so quickly that the $1000 for a 50" P Series is barely cheaper now. For a price hike that small, most people will choose Samsung over Vizio.

You keep the pro for 4K gaming. You treat the Xbox as a cheap 4K bluray player with the bonus of access to MS exclusives. Even if you never game on it, it's still basically half the price of a standard 4K bluray player

Same. Just got my XB1S the other day. Its been great so far.

I don't think i would've picked the S up had the Pro come with a 4k drive.

most of the exclusives i have on PC already. But its really nice that i can get my 360 digital library back and enjoy games like RDR scaled up to 4k.

There's no point selling stuff like that - if the TV is still in good shape I'll simply pass it to family.

So the TVs all recommended here are edge lit? But many TVs have local LEDS behind the whole panel now too?

Two things: While I'm sure he's in a position to know more than some people, he isn't the final authority on what is or is not in the works. And second, I'll still gladly take the extra input lag if it means I get the amazing picture quality that comes along with the OLED screen.

I do think it's smart though to not expect improvement, and if there is a FW update later that lowers input lag it will be a pleasant surprise.

You can buy the Phillips 4K Blu-Ray player for $250 now and it comes with a free copy of Creed for what it's worth. It's a much better player than One S if you have no interest in Xbox games.

I don't have a 4K TV yet myself but I've been seriously contemplating it. How bad could the input lag be? Especially for something like single player games? Obviously a game like Mon Hun it'd be a huge deal or competitive games but... other than that? FFXV? Probably wouldn't be make or break situation I'd imagine, no?

It's a bigger deal in competitive games and 60fps games. It won't affect me too much as I play mostly RPG's and games that don't require quick reactions, but it's something you have to decide for yourself.

I'm the same, honestly. I only really play RPG's as well. I do play the ODD competitive game though but generally, if I have the option on PC to do it, I'll do it there instead (MMO's too... FFXIV fits). Otherwise it's only Nintendo games or just... yeah... single player JRPG's.

Mon Hun definitely requires quick precision though. Probably the only sort of... RPG-like game that would require a tv with minimal input lag.

I think Mon Hun would even be fine, I had no issues with Bloodborne on a set with 54ms input lag, even parries with the gun felt easy to do.
