Oh my god! I have been making sure to gain all the skills for each weapon through proficiency and had no clue I had to also equip passive skills. Sheesh, no wonder I thought my weapon was neither on fire or shooting lightning.

Wouldn't know. Don't see any art in the game at all. There aren't even character portraits. Just tons of really ugly 3D people everywhere.

Xanadu Next came out two years after Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim and released close to Ys: The Oath in Felghana. It's generally as polished as the latter since both were developed in conjunction, unless you're talking about another, better Ys which trounces both. Xananext derives its quick pacing, bosses and enemy/player progression from games like Oath in Felghana, but also integrates elements from Falcom's Brandish and Zwei!! games like an interconnected overworld, many different weapons and spells you have to master, an experience system where you don't automatically increase stats upon level-up, a fighter/mage split in character build you have to balance, way more environmental/abstract puzzles, &c.
There's shop portraits, which you can tell weren't illustrated by the game's main artist (Satoru Senda, who did the art in the Steam banner but not the retail box art). Game has good designs, and I wish there was a Senda illustration of the Sages because their models aren't good. Monsters look better than the humans thankfully.
It's 100% for mastery of the skill, but it caps at 200% for the weapon. Weapons grow stronger with more proficiency.

The most notable difference combat-wise to me is that positioning is significantly more important.
The most notable difference character-wise is that it's a lot more "RPG-like" in terms of stats, skills and equipment.

I would warn that I've played all the Ys games and this game is more confusing navigation wise. Still doable, but you might need notes. (or bumble your way through like me)

Okay so I'm stuck in the eternal maze.
Ive explored as much as I could, opened the first sluice gate and continued on. Now I'm stuck at 4 different spots: 2 stairwells blocked by big boulders, a stairwell missing middle stairs so I can't go up, and a block puzzle.
The block puzzle I'm guessing is the way to go, but I can't figure it out. You can't pick up blocks can you? Its the one that is four blocks in a row in front of a wall and it goes:
wooden::half wooden::heavy::heavy::wall
Anyone know how to solve this, or if this isn't the place to be, what my next step is?
Side note, is there any way to get the fire gel things to not explode? I tried killing them with ice but that didn't do anything

I just got to this boss. I'm doing 1 damage per standard attack. Is that right or is there more to it?
If it's the puzzle I'm thinking of, you can push the full wooden one on top of the half wooden one, and then up onto the heavy ones, and then once it's up there, attack it once and walk up on top of it.

The interconnectivity of the world is really neat. It's not just "here's a shortcut for shortcut's sake".

For real though, I've been looking at Xanadu Next as the isometric prelude to the Souls series (Yes, different companies, I know) just because of the bonus damage for attacking enemies' backs. It's been holding up incredibly well in that light -- no, better in my mind because the game likes to pit multiple opponents against you but gives you crowd-controlling tools to actually deal with them without having to constantly roll-dance and it gives you them from the outset. Finding the combat much more engaging as a result, even if Xanadu Next's equivalent of Giant Dad statistically breaks all the non-boss encounters I've been in so far.
Also it has Falcom music and platforming controls that don't completely suck. >:|

Vagrant Story was also described by some as Diablo like.
I guess to some people action RPG + overhead + dark dungeon delving = like Diablo! Even though you'd have an easier time comparing to Zelda (especially with that fucking obsession with getting piles of single use keys, though Zelda was never this extreme.)

There are more to the souls comparisons than just increased damage on back-attacks. The way spells/SP function is probably the biggest similarity between them. Makes you wonder if people at From Soft are familiar with this game. My guess is probably.
Whew, just defeated the final boss. You guys weren't kidding with the final dungeon being huge. Fantastic game. (Played the whole thing with mouse)
Still some skills to master and guardians to level though. And I didn't know about that ranking at the end :O I mostly got Ds lol. So I guess the Chevalier des Chevaliers achievement has nothing to do with the level, but with that ranking instead?

Yeah, there's the spell charges, Harlech Village being the best of Firelink Shrine with the interconnected paths but with an actual hub village like Majula (despite being before either of them!), level-up lady, mid-game teleport item...The list goes on.
There's nothing. I don't think I can go back to Souls after this! D:
Slight exaggeration, but DS3's got a lot to live up to when I get to it.

It was an immediate life improvement when I learned to stop giving a shit about hyper accurate sub-genres in games, music, etc... I've had so many discussions about the correct categorization of metal bands to the benefit of nobody. Making sure this thing is not grouped with that thing for all sorts of inane reasons. Broad strokes is a good way to live. Fretting over the details almost always comes across less as knowledgeable and more like Comic Book Guy.
If someone starts to argue that Blue is Red then, sure, I'll jump in and argue. Some level of grouping is useful, for sure. But making sure Baby Blue, Powder Blue, and Navy Blue are being used instead of just calling it Blue is almost always a waste of everyone's time, imo.

Never played the Brandish titles, would definitely like to play them. I do hope after Trails in the Sky 3rd they bring Zero over to Steam.
It used to be that Ys 7 and MoC were the only two (non-Trails) missing Falcom games I really wanted to see released on Steam. But man, Xanadu Next is so freaking good that now I'll gladly buy anything from their back catalogue. I'm not too keen on super old titles from the 80s but I'd love to play more of their late 90s/early 2000s stuff. Might have to give Brandish a try soonish (assuming it's playable on Vita).

I loved Brandish PSP, I never played the extra quest you get after you beat it. I should go back. I tried the other original Brandish games and I couldn't wrap my mind around the rotation although it's technically the same from a different angle. I need to try again. I played the Legend of Grimrock games to get my fix instead.

Brandish was such a good surprise when it came out. I didn't think I'd like it anywhere near as much as I did... just a great game from start to finish.

Dancing enemy groups is easily my favorite part of combat. The skeleton arena halfway through Castle Strangerock, as well as most of Netherworld, is all about kiting and timing individual attacks to make your own attack priorities. I feel like Falcom has more they can do to expand on this idea, but they haven't made a game with systems like Xananext's in a while.
Sorcerian's maybe not as good as it should be but worth a shot anyway. Maybe the Forever scenarios did better than the PC-88 games'.

The ending's surprising. Even a certain memoir didn't prepare for me exactly what twist the game pulls, and how that provides a sequel hook.
Pre-Win9x Falcom games need a PC-98/-88 emulator standalone each, which means XSEED would have to license a fan emulator and everything NEC would have to provide or they'd have to partner with Project EGG/D4 Enterprises the way Falcom does for compilations. You're also forgetting Shin Eiyuu Densetsu/New Legend of Heroes, a remake of the very first game which improves a number of things and has new/rearranged music. That could be a lot of fun (aka torture) to get running these days. I think Brandish 1 through VT/4 will get fan translations and lose commercial appeal quicker than Xanadu Next did over time, so XSEED will probably skip those out of prudence.
Dela Mode is quite challenging but not a stupidly big leap over Fortress in difficulty. Just be ready to analyze some tough sections and take your time attacking enemies to build up strength for her.
I would love a Popful Mail collection, specifically for a translated SNES version (why has this still not happened), but I feel that those games are going to be left buried in gaming's past.
