A vote is an instrument used to express your decision on an opinion. I decided to express my thanks(opinion) to senator Sanders by using my vote as the delivery instrument. Hillary's platform wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for Bernie.

With that being said, because we currently have a two-party system, and we're in a binary election, voting against Hillary would have been a vote for Trump (Republican platform). Not only that but I also said hell would freeze over before Trump won my state so your argument is a fallacy. Just as easily, I could have sat out this election. Would that be a vote against Bernie's results? No. The same holds true if I had voted for Micky Mouse.

I expressed my gratitude and what I did with my vote is not going against that.
I mean, or you could have written him a letter. It's not like he knows you or your vote exists. You could have gone to the ocean and whispered it into the salty ether.

And while your vote may not have affected the actual result, the margin by which Trump loses is still relevant in how the country perceives how his type of nationalist, hateful rhetoric moves forward. Bernie didn't want you to do this, and for good reason.

Obviously your ballot is cast. But next time, consider being less selfish.

I'm literally crying from laughter right now
"You have to be 18 to be registered to vote? But I'm only 12!"

If Hillary wins, I can finally stop thinking about the alt-right and can ignore them. I don't even want to see their meltdown, I just want to forget they exist.

It might just get worst for the next election, they aren't going to go quietly unless they win. And it won't be that long before the next wave of campaigning starts.

Okay not all republicans are racists or sexist though. I voted hillary, but that doesnt mean its cool to disregard a group of people based on stereotypes (yes in this case i am reffering to republicans) just as its not cool for some of the more hardcore conservatives to do it to other groups of people, we really all need to stop hating eachother as much, thats what ive garnered from this election.

I agree with you that hating each other is bad for everyone, but there seems to be no hope for people on the far right side of the spectrum at this point from my perspective.

In my experience, plenty of people on the left side have tried to used reason and tried to come to some sort of middle ground. I've done this myself. But a large part of the right do not want to hear it. They don't care about facts or a stable government, they want things to be their way and to live in their reality.

When one side puts so much emphasis on suppressing people of a certain race, gender or sexuality- it's really hard to say "we should accept them" when their entire philosophy is based on hate and in most cases unchangeable.

Holy shit!
I can't quote everyone because there were too many responses but the HATE I just received for that post shows how hypocritical many people are. Don't like a candidate because he spews hate but then spew hate at anyone who even suggests that they might want him to win?

Are there any Trump supporters on GAF? Are they all mercilessly shut down and told that they are horrible people? This is a presidential candidate! A great man.

Where is the love and tolerance?
Agreed, where is the love and tolerance of women, racial minorities, foreigners and LGBT folks?

Get bent.

"We're going for a Trump win for maximum lolz."

"WTF!! Such hypocrites, criticizing me so much just for having a differing opinion! Is tolerance dead??"

Unbelievable. I'll never understand people who post something just to rankle people, and then feign shock and indignation whenever people are rankled.

Has it been posted, Trump Tower today is surrounded by a ring of dump trucks filled with sand? Trump is paranoid that someone's is going to bomb the building, so he's built a barricade around his tower lol

You vote for Trump you don't get that benefit of the doubt. When has the Republican party "ever" given the people it demonizes the benefit of the doubt?

I know plenty of republicans, my mother included, who did not vote for trump today. Trust me hes just as reviled in certain republican circles as he is in the democratic ones

How much different is it to call a large group of people "racist and deplorable" than to call another a group of thugs? They are both wrong and it needs to end.

Because one is based on actual beliefs and actions (deplorable) while the other is based simply on a person's skin color. Saying that anybody who supports Trump is a deplorable piece of shit is not racist.

I heard that there's a dark cloud above the building as trump prepares a sacrifice to Gozer.

Told my wife my vote. YUP! Not getting any lovin for a long time. There's a big turn out for voting for my area. As of this morning when I went it was close to being double of last election. I got there after a big group and as I was leaving a big group was coming in.

Insane..

People just gonna keep responding to NutJobJim all day despite being asked multiple times to stop, huh

Yeah those things are very different. One is a group of voters backing a racist candidate. That's a choice. You don't choose to be Black.

It might just get worst for the next election, they aren't going to go quietly unless they win. And it won't be that long before the next wave of campaigning starts.

I'm hoping the GOP will attempt to back and support a more moderate republican in the next election season. I doubt we'll see anything like Trump next time, given the backlash.

I don't mean an instrument of self expression as you described. It's an instrument of power to influence a reality that exists independently from your perspective- one of two outcomes will occur. That is the reality for everyone. Your vote is not viewed as being an expression to anyone other than yourself, but your vote as an instrument has actual power and makes a difference to affect the outcome for everyone.

The two party system is not up for debate. That's the way it has to work. Whichever of the two major parties is most closely aligned with and consequently most negatively affected by an increasingly influential 3rd party, that major party would adapt to include the platform of that third party, leaving two major parties again. That's how first past the post voting works.

You're right that in your particular case, your vote has more meaning to yourself than the state and country. But imagine if everyone felt that way. The point being, your vote is an instrument to affect an outcome from two possibilities.

took me way too long to figure out that "MAGA" meant what it does

i kept thinking it was really weird for tr*mp supporters to care so much about cqc

Roanoke (City) went for Obama (60.1%) in 2012
Roanoke (County) went for Romney (61.7%) in 2012

So, that really does depend on which Roanoke you live in.

County, and all the signs I saw were Trump and only a Republican person was out handing sample ballots.

So, yeah, not good here.

+1 Hillary in Michigan. In and out in under 10 minutes.

It always seems so crazy to me when I see news footage of places with long lines mixed with footage inside polling areas that seem really slow and dead. The county office I've voted at for the last several years has always seemed pretty full inside and outside, but there's always been enough poll workers and booths to move everyone through quickly.

The last place I lived had a larger fairgrounds building used as its polling place and the longest I had to wait there was 5 minutes.

Technically, his vote does effect the margin by which Trump loses. It just doesn't effect the margin in which Clinton wins. Which, doesn't even matter in his state given it's heavy redness.

It's not selfish. It's a perfectly reasonable compromise.

Wtf?

Although, wasn't there a terrorism warning in NYC today?

Yeah, let's stop hating ignorant, arrogant, homophobic, xenophobic, misogynistic, racist, anti-science, anti-intellectual imbeciles who live in their own reality. Let's be nice to them so they can take advantage of it the way they always do to make sure that we don't make a fucking inch of progress under the guise of "respecting" each other's viewpoint and pretending like the mere existence of another viewpoint gives it the same validity as any other. Then, when they get their crazy, ignorant fuck into the White House, let's see how all that works out for us.

The problem with America is almost certainly not that we disregard groups of people; it's that we don't do it enough. Ask Obama how trying to work across the aisle and making concessions to the right-wing worked out. Actually, just look at the obstructionism of the past 8 years while they called him a Kenyan Muslim socialist who founded ISIS and posted jokes comparing him and his family to apes.

It's time we start making changes while ignoring people who refuse to accept basic facts. We have squandered decades of progress because of this naive horseshit. FUCK right-wing trash and everything they stand for and let's not worry so much about them. We all know that demonstrably good changes to this country will end up benefiting them, even if they "feel" the opposite. They will be fine. They will still have all their rights and they will still be able to complain, but at least we will know that we're moving in the right direction, with or without their approval.

You too eh? I've been checking it all morning for amusement It's like they think they're in a separate reality over there where dumb shit that means nothing apparently has way more importance. It's both funny to laugh at the delusion of thinking getting a post number end in the same number twice means you candidate will win, but it's also very sad.

I also learned that there's apparently a frog god named Kek?

I don't understand how people with opposite political views can get married. I'm biased since I'm a poli sci major but do you guys just not talk about politics with each other or

A large portion of Republican voters are single issue on abortion.

You guys need to stop with the same generalizations and stereotypes that you claim to hate so much.

When you vote for a candidate and their whole platform you get the whole enchilada. You can't pick and choose which parts of their platform you support, your vote is for all of it including the harm it brings to others. You can't claim ignorance, especially with this election and how in the face Trump has been with his hateful rhetoric. At best, at bare minimum best, you are ok with hateful, racist, anti-LGBT policies and a misogynist enough to vote on a single issue.

That's good. I'm simply aaying, Trump and the Republican party as a whole literally do not give the benefit of the doubt to anyone they speak against. Don't expect their targets to extend that compassion while being spit on. It's laughable.
