I see three possible outcomes for the EU:

  • Mainstream political parties realise the danger ahead and step the fuck up
  • Mainstream (not just radical) conservative see Trump's success and try to model themselves after the GOP just like they did a decade ago with Bush
  • Emboldened by Brexit and Trump's victory, far right parties conquer large parts of Europe previously denied to them

I don't like the odds. It's never been more critical for Europe not to fuck it up, both at national and Union levels. We absolutely don't want anything weird happening in the Baltics nor the Balkans.

Frankly, I believe we'll see a mixture of 2 and 3. Traditional conservative parties will move to the right and eventually most governments, depending on the system, will either be more-to-the-right-now conservatives or coalitions of conservatives and right-wing populists. Once EU borders are eventually secured, the middle east more or less stabilized, ISIS eradicated and proper immigration channels set up, things will become more liberal again. What most people fail to see is that this shit works like a pendulum. A pendulum that currently swings to the right due to several reasons - but the world isn't suddenly gonna end and we're all gonna die in WW3 - the pendulum will eventually swing back to the left again etc.

Also please let's not fall into the trap of assuming everyone in europe just turned racist and antieuropean overnight. Shit's a consequence of failed EU policies and PR.

Nothing should be taken for granted. The risk of American style post-fact politics spreading in the Union is as real as it is dangerous.

honestly you all need to nip that shit in that ass right away. we here in the us let our racist family members and friends ramble on and on and be bigots without denouncing them and now we here. intellectuals have been too passive and quiet for the last 20 or so years full stop

The fact that alt-right cunts and toxic GOP psychopaths have been totally validated by the American electorate is one of the worst aspects of all of this.

Having a buffoon as president is one thing. Allowing the psychopaths around pretty much unlimited power, a mandate that they can change at will, and the social license to exercise their disgusting behavior is just... beyond the pale.

How much of GAF is moving to canada?

almost none.

canada is hard to move to legally unless you have 10 million lying around or make 40k plus from a business you could take with you to canada.

from what I have found so far
if you are 18-30 scottland would be an okay choice due to the Tier 5 (Youth mobility scheme) (you also need about 2k in savings)

new zealand might also be okay... their need for skilled workers is hard to figure out what exactly they want.

I remember last summer when the Trump campaign started I was training as a Resident with one of the Oncologists in a somewhat more rural area of California. He liked doing a lot of small talk with patients and at some point of the visit, would usually ask them what they thought about Trump (since it was one of the bigger conversations going on that summer).

Again, this was a more rural area of the state, but it still surprised me how many of them were excited to see a Trump presidency. The reasons for their support seemed fairly consistent (I heard the phrases "to shake things up" and "we need real change this time" a lot).

I'll admit I never took it too seriously, especially at that time. Their Trump votes wouldn't mean much in the Super Blue of California after all.

But now I realize how naive it was to write these people off as 'the minority'. As if they represented the worn out threads of the old guard of America. And to think they didn't have a path to making a Trump Presidency a reality.

Apparently, this is America. I just spent too much time in my bubble (i.e. my group of friends, the State I live in, and the websites I visit) to notice it.

Fuck reality.

The real president that America deserves is on TV:

Save us, President Kirkman.

Jack Bauer became president? The new 24 season is going to be wild.

if the Democrats really want to copy Trump's blueprint for success they need to like convince the fucking Rock to run in 2020 or something. Seriously the bar has been lowered. You just need someone who can "excite" people with zero substance.

Holy shit. My mom came into my room to bring me a plate of chicken nuggets and I literally screamed at her and hit the plate of chicken nuggets out of her hand. She started yelling and swearing at me and I slammed the door on her. I’m so distressed right now I don’t know what to do. I didn’t mean to do that to my mom but I’m literally in shock from the exit polls tonight. I feel like I’m going to explode. Why the fucking fuck has he won? This can’t be happening. I’m having a fucking breakdown. I don’t want to believe the world is so corrupt. I want a future to believe in. I want Clinton to smash the glass ceiling and be a fine example to us all. I cannot fucking deal with this right now. It wasn’t supposed to be like this, I thought she was really winning because these main stream media showed polls where Hillary wins and i wake up to this???? This is so fucked.

What the fuck is wrong with you. Grow up.

In all seriousness, do you think any assassination attempts will be made against him?
To entertain the idea for a second (I DO NOT CONDONE ASSASSINATION OR ANY OTHER FORMS OF MURDER IN COLD BLOOD) it won't matter. Pence will just replace him and he's arguably more dangerous because he's actually competent and he "seems" like a good guy to low info voters. Additionally Trump being assassinated will make him look like a martyr and motivate the alt right even more.

Hell you could take out Trump and Pence and it wouldn't mean anything because it would just go to the House Speaker... who is a Republican.

This awful, awful administration is going to go unchecked for at least 2 years no matter what any of us do save for the apocalypse happening.

Oh wow. It really is Brexit for you guys.

Any Americans want to know how the next few months pan out, check some back issues of the British press.

Enjoy your rise in racial tensions and people calling for us to suspend the democratic process, oh and your chocolate being turned to shit.
Anything but our Toblerones! The spacing is too inhumane!

I know GAF has... 'mixed' thoughts on him but John Bain had quite a lot to say as someone who's immigrated to the US and is currently relying on the policies Obama enacted for his cancer treatments:

https://www.twitch.tv/totalbiscuit/p/126163861478683627

he's an immigrant like my parents were

dependent on obamas policies. he doesn't deserve this. we don't deserve this. solidarity, even though his opinions may not be popular. solidarity.

I really wish it hadn't turned out this way. We need to be working on climate change yesterday, and bringing a couple of deniers into office.. fuck, man. Like, the situation is already grim even if we were to pull out all of the stops now, so.. fuck, man.

At least Florida will be under water in a few decades.

Here in Germany we have our right-wing extrimists, too. But the biggest right-wing party (AFD) is not comparable in terms of extremism to what Trump and his supporters let loose over the course of this campaign though, or at least its kept in check.
The good thing is that our politics are not driven as much by personality as in the US, making it much harder for a pseudo-charismatic leader to step up and get support just because he or she has a certain personality. While Merkel has a lot of people who like her on a personal level, its still not comparable in terms of scope and following.

Just woke to the news. My prediction was correct I see. I know people are emotional right now, however, I wish Trump the best of luck, he won fair and square. Life goes on and four years from now we'll be doing this all over again.

I'm an European Federalist.

You cannot imagine how bad I want the EU to start looking the road ahead.

Nothing should be taken for granted. The risk of American style post-fact politics spreading in the Union is as real as it is dangerous.
I'd say Brexit already started that sadly.

The only class warfare and income redistribution going on here is by the tiny minority of rich people on the planet ravaging and pillaging everyone else. The 2 U.S. Big Tent parties are proxies for different subsets of industries led by these exact people. Trump is a blatant con artist and always has been. He is a true opportunist that will sell out to the highest bidder like every other corrupt politician there ever has been. So, the cycle of the rich ravaging and pillaging everyone else will continue with Trump selling out to the highest bidder. He is literally America's Silvio Berlusconi.

Well said.

He's going to surround himself with establishment Republicans....but he's anti-establishment.

He's a spoonfed billionaire 1%er.....but he's looking out for the little guy.

He brags about skirting tax loopholes and won't release his returns....but he's going to clean up wall street and Washington corruption.

He outsources all of his own production business outside of the country...but he's going to bring back blue collar jobs.

The logic of a Donald J. Trump supporter.
This right here. I just don't get why anyone in their right mind would vote for this guy yet the majority of USA did.
Looking 'forward' to some post-election "I voted Trump because..." videos. Maybe this will help me understand the result.

Yeah this approach really needs to be adopted. When people feel like they are being attacked or condescended, they get defensive, not receptive. You have to hear people out and then explain your point of view in a way that's calm and empathetic.

I agree liberalism can be smug, and I have criticized it in the past, but I don't feel it applies here too much. Trump literally ran on derision, discord, and antipathy. His supporters received the message in full and were buoyed by its visceral impact. How can one be empathetic and respond to that?

Perhaps apply this paradigm to the rustbelt that voted obama last term who didn't show up for clinton - they may have felt abandoned on their issues. That's a place to start. But trump supporters in general? This was a war for them, and liberalism the enemy.

It's not just you guys. First Brexit, now this. I believe France and Germany will be next. Humans were a mistake, we are nothing but trash. Climate change fuckery can't come soon enough to wipe us out, and having deniers in powerful positions will just accelerate the process.

I am feeling a big disappointment in the human race for years now, believing in something good is useless, as a collective we are shit.
Chill out with the misanthropy. The kind and good and enlightened have always been the minority, at every point in history.

You're condemning the entire species for the dark elements that have always existed. You think people should just give up fighting for human rights and knowledge because anti-intellectualism and bigotry are at a temporary high tide? Collect your balls and fucking do something to make the world better, whether it's working with others to support a cause you believe in, or investing in yourself so that you can be a positive, constructive presence in the world.

Take a walk through a museum or read some damn books. A rich history of art and literature and philosophy and science is waiting for you. If you're prepared to say our collective achievements are worthless, it's time to take a step back and get in touch with the things that make life worth living.

Assuming this isn't a joke post, people really need to stop payingg attention to polls. According to them, Labour are still in government over here in the UK, we're still in the EU, and Clinton won today.

The only real crystal ball I believed in was "24"...after a black man there should've been a woman becoming president ;(

And what of the blacks and Latinos who voted for CLinton, does that automatically mean they are educated? (and not racist bigots?)

No.

I'm tired of this bullshit.

Trump RAN on a platform of BLATANT bigotry and empty promises and delivers rambling, barely coherent speeches and debate performances that for some reason get graded on a curve. He has no political experience, vacillates wildly (sometimes within the same week), and is damn near BFFs with Vladmir Putin.

Clinton has a LOT of issues but she is at the very least a competent politician, makes sense when she speaks, and is not cozying up to leaders of foreign nations with egregious human rights issues.

Choosing Trump at all, not even necessarily over Clinton, means you are missing several pieces of the puzzle.

Choosing Clinton doesn't automatically mean you aren't racist or bigoted.

Oh wow. It really is Brexit for you guys.

Any Americans want to know how the next few months pan out, check some back issues of the British press.

But isn't american chocolate already shit? ;)

Actually, as the vote comes in, it looks like Hillary may have won the popular vote.

*sigh*

Yes he was. Parliamentary democracies don't work like the US does.
They never had a majority, in fact the Nazis were losing seats when they seized power.

Did you even read that page? That election happened after they seized power. Maybe not fully but at least to the point of physically attacking opposition and voter intimidation.

Learn some basic history.

I wish you guys would stop wasting your time quoting Kolgar and asking him questions that he is just dodging. Attention is all they want, stop giving it to them.

Far from it; I am saddened and disgusted by the general tenor of this thread. What I want is for Americans to stop with the identity politics and start using their heads. I encourage people to set aside their biases and engage their intellectual curiosity--that's always a good thing.

But it's not my responsibility to convince or persuade anyone here. You are responsible for forming your own beliefs.

I wish you the best. You are in charge of your own happiness.

It's like, do people really wanna act like Trump is a piece of shit, who's full of shit, is that really wanna do? The filth and garbage that comes out of his mouth, the shady as fuck dogwhistling, the unconstitutional policies, the fucking wall that would be a financial disaster?

White folks went ahead and made sure the indefensible became the elected, and with ease, completely cancelling out the overwhelming minority rejection. That is some shameful shit.

-sigh-

I have to say. Having someone I care about greatly being a minority and a member of the LGBT+ community I fear for them. I hope this doesn't effect them greatly, but I have a fear it will.

A man who refers to sexual assault as "Locker Room Talk" is pathetic, and his racist remarks, generalization and mocking a disabled person is baffling. How can people support someone so hateful and single-minded?

I'm Trans myself and I fear for what this may bring. I was hoping our country was more accepting, but this just proves to me that it's just the opposite. My heart goes out to anyone in the LGBT+ Community and any minority that may feel intimidated or scared. I feel you, and I hope the best for us all.

What really hurts is that I was just wrong about our country. America just sent a clear message that it doesn't want to tolerate, much less embrace people like me and the people I know and love.

Dear USA.

The UK seemingly doesn't like to think of itself as part of Europe anyway, so we wash our hands and let the knobsticks fuck off as they please.

Love,
Europe

Please stop this. Over 15 million of us DO consider ourselves European and voted that way. Million of Americans voted against Trump. Calling us all names is counter-productive. Yes, frankly, we've all been really fucking complacent for far too long. That needs to end. And Europe has now had two massive wake-up calls. Use them, please.
