Yeah this approach really needs to be adopted. When people feel like they are being attacked or condescended, they get defensive, not receptive. You have to hear people out and then explain your point of view in a way that's calm and empathetic.

There is a clip of Neil DeGrasse Tyson calling out Richard Dawkins for this kind of behavior.

And anyone that feels like persuading someone to your way of thinking is impossible should check out Daryl Davis. He's a black man who has gotten several KKK members to revoke their Klan memberships just by talking to them. I mean, these people were literally members of a hate group, and even they were convinced to see the error of their ways.

And that was with those guys patrolling the streets in force on election day:
