President is elected via the electoral college, so states have X number of votes that elect the POTUS. You win the state you get the votes (two states distribute differently are not fptp). The founding fathers put in it to protect the masses from themselves and to give each state a form of meaningful representation.

So basically, the highly powerful position of leader of the free world is chosen via something akin to the Nielsen TV ratings system? Great.

In the UK, when we have an Election we don't have the PM candidates on our ballots (unless you happen to live in their constituency). In the US however, there's no reason to not go with the popular vote as you vote directly for the President. 1 person, 1 vote - as opposed to your vote being worth a fraction of someone who happens to live in a different state.
