Alright.

I have Zero interest in politics. So please indulge me this one minor question.
If both candidate were terrible, couldn't you just prolong Obama ? He seemed like a good guy.
What is the reasoning for the maximum number of years holding presidency ?

Oh and don't hate me for this, I might have Zero interest in politics, but I like the good show it is providing.

How are some of you all handling this?
I feel crushed and I'm not one to be into politics but this whole trump thing should have been so clear to everyone how unfit he is compared to his opponent and yet he won.

My mom was sobbing last night, I work up this morning with my eyes still closed to hear that he won. I feel I've been crying inside and a feeling anxiety. Again I could care less but this is just insane...

Especially to learn that my dad and older brother are all for trump. Don't really have any relationship with them either so that's good.

Feels like a John Carpenter movie

It's true. Despite the population increasing, 8 million less people voted in this election.
From the coverage I watched yesterday morning, it looked as if there was going to be a record turnout of voters. I wonder how many people voted but left the presidential vote blank.

The people who voted for his ass are going to be crying for his impeachment within 4-6 months the moment that he steps into the office on January 20th. Watch.

the term limits are outlined in our founding document, the constitution. changing it would require an amendment, which is difficult to pass in the best of circumstances.

Well all those posters saying the Bernie Busters were full of shit and going to come home, have a lot of egg on their face.

Repubs get in line much easier than Dems do.

Guys, I'm talking about a fucking advertisement. Obviously I want spirited and diverse discussion with participation by many viewpoints. I don't see how not allowing his ads to run makes this place an echo chamber. I'm not talking about banning people who support him, I'm talking about not wearing a fucking T-shirt. There is a difference.

Well, Trump's plan is Health Savings Accounts, kneecapping the FDA, and opening up state lines.

I'm horrified for people that need the subsidies and what this means for people with pre-existing conditions. But at the same time part of me is anxious to see whether or not this really does bring insurance premiums down in the short term. Like, you fought tooth and nail against the ACA at every turn and have blamed it for skyrocketing health care costs. But I feel like many forget that health care costs were already going up at an exorbitant rate prior to the ACA. So, for better or worse, the floor is your's. Let's see if the magic of the free market can get costs down or at the very least in check.

The most depressing thing is just that assuming that this does bring premiums down for most Americans, it only sets back the real end game (in my opinion) of single payer.

It's pretty strange that they are trying to drive competition with insurance providers instead of the service providers. The discussion is always, WHO is paying the bill instead of WHY is the bill so insane. I recently had a thyroglossal duct cyst removed and counting all tests and procedures, the final cost to Aetna was $21,000. That is after they got their negotiated rate. My out of pocket max was $3000. So not too crazy for me, but everyone else paying premiums to Aetna footed the remaining $12,000(my company pays $6000 to Aetna). This cost is insane given the amount of time anyone spent on me. The CT scan itself was $5000. I spent 5 minutes in the machine and im sure the Radiologists spent the same time looking at the images. Why in fuckin Sam hill does a CT scan costs $5000? Machine did not look new either so costs had to have been reimbursed before I got there.

Honestly holding out hope that in the first year he does something monumentally and undeniably stupid that costs him the presidency. But even then they won't kick him out.

So is a wall actually going to be built now?

No, the wall's not happening

Likely outcomes:
-Foreign trade and foreign policy goes to absolute shit, the US economy crashes and the global economy goes with it
-the GOP house and local GOP governance get to push through every vile regressive bill they've been salivating over for six years

Overall all still depress. I am more worry about how minorities, LGBT, Muslins and Climate change are going to be effected.

dems/liberals had a chance to change this country forever. we could have made this country amazing again and instead? 4 years of donald trump.

A lot of women are opposed to what the feminist movement has become and I personally don't find the female vote surprising as a result. You don't get it because you've surrounded yourself with like-minded people. We all do it in our own way and it can be shocking to realize the way we think is just not the same as other people. My girlfriend hates feminists, for example. She thinks Trump is appalling though. We are not American, but she would have never voted for him for reasons other than his opinion of women.
The thing is tho a woman supporting her rights doesn't make her a feminist. I don't consider myself one. I just support my rights. Clearly I guess I'm way out of touch.

Things to hope for:
  1. Failure to repeal fillibuster, somehow. Allowing democrats to gridlock the Senate and House for 4 years, and get nothing done.
  2. The SCOTUS members currently alive, survive and/or do not retire for four years.
  3. The SCOTUS members currently sitting, all say "this shit is crazy" and lean moderate more than we'd expect of them.
  4. Obama pulls a magic trick and fills Scalia's seat somehow.
  5. Trump doesn't do any of the things he said, and actually starts fighting/in-fighting his party.
  6. A bunch of the eight-years worth of talking points for the Republican party get implemented (because they will) and blow up spectacularly in their faces. (It will be very interesting to see what happens when ACA is actually repealed/overturned, and many other such moves. If "get the jobs back" fails and the country spirals down hard in the first two years, I can't imagine Trump's anti-establishment or "get our jobs back" supporters are going to have much love for their candidate or party.)

Actually, most of your list has a shot at happening.

What people fail to realize about the filibuster, is that should the Republicans become a minority in 2018 (it looks likely now that the Republicans have won the presidency and the opposite party normally wins) they are not going to want the Democrats to take away the filibuster. Also, they can apply the rule to certain things and not everything if they wanted which seems like the likely bet (like the Dems removed the filibuster on only judicial nominees). Congress looks out for itself first and foremost.

The majority of the SCOTUS is probably dying in office anyway. We're living longer, so I'm sure justices in their 80's will be fine. They may also lean moderate as well. Remember no one wants to touch Roe v Wade right now and that includes the most conservative judges.

The Never Trumpers could actually force a vote on Garland. I can see that happening if Trump nominates his sister instead of who they actually want.

Oh there will be tremendous in fighting, like you wouldn't believe. It's not like Trump can jail or fire his dissenters.

I feel like everything they want to do during the presidency will blow up in their faces. America will stay the same because it is already great. We are never going to be in a situation like the 50's ever again. They can dream though.

it was always gonna be tough. difficult for a party to win three terms in a row. not to downplay Trump or the Breitbart people; clearly they understood something others did not. just that historically, it was always gonna be tough.

So true, I was thinking the same thing. A ton of people find themselves in the same life situations dealing with the same types of problems year after year, want to blame whatever political party happens to be in office for their issue, and then decide to vote for the other party to see if it actually changes anything. It's always just going to go back and forth like this in what is basically a 2 party system.

So as it turns out we were the mirror universe all along. What a twist!

brb - growing beard.
