Serious question as a european.

Read almost this entire thread trying to make me understand what the hell happened in your country.

But something doesn't seem right, all the posts have about the same question or are complaining.

Where are the 50.000.000!!! percentage that vote Trump saying something in this thread?

Iis there truly a part of society that we don't see or understand? (Like i think is happening all across Europe)

Older white people voted for Trump.

Older white people don't post on GAF, or have an internet presence in general (outside of Facebook).

the kind of extremely patronizing and antagonizing comments i've seen in this thread are exactly why trump won. you do not peacefully convince people that you are right by aggressively making fun of them and telling them that they are wrong, even if it's true. that makes them even more entrenched in their own beliefs, and breeds resentment as well. it's really sad that the left has failed to realize this, and it has led to this massive divide in the country. i say that as someone who leans left-of-center when it comes to politics.
Voice of reason, but unfortunately it will be mostly ignored around here.

The hate, mudslinging and fear mongering I'm seeing today is outright disturbing.

So it's Clintons fault more so than the people who couldn't be bothered to vote, voted third party or voted Harambe?

Clintons campaigns fault, partially, yes. They underestimated taking Trump seriously, and constant headlines and rhetoric about Trump having no chance most certainly led to some voter apathy. Why go out and vote when it's pissing down with rain and I've been told Clinton will 99% win?

Nah fuck that I'm not gonna speak nice to people who support a racist or have bigoted ideals. Fuck them and their feelings. I hope their god emperor leads them to ruin so hard they wake the fuck up.

You cannot reason with people like that.

Ummm...yes?

So you admit that yes it is the fault of the voter? You lose the right to complain about the outcome if you had a chance to change it and couldn't be bothered. People's common sense or lack thereof is all on them.

No, you don't. This is nonsense and always has been. If more people had been passionate about one of the two candidates, more people would have voted.

It's not like people were making stuff up about words coming out of Trumps mouth. He laid it out there for all to see, and even doubled down plenty of times.

People are exploding on my Facebook today. People are depressed, angry, tearing into other friends.... Shouts of white privilege, shouts of "who cares?". Lots of division.

These next few months are going to be especially scary.

Well hopefully one day you'll realize you, and people like you, are part of the problem.

i just cant feel good right now. i cant think of anything to make me happy. i was already depressed and i feel like this is finally the thing to do it

This argument wasn't very popular on here during the campaign. People put their need to be right and to bully anyone who had views they disagreed with above trying constructively to create positive change. And this is the result.

If you want to know what lost this thing, start by looking at yourself and the way you behaved.

Can you imagine Trump being sworn in with thousands and thousands of people protesting? I really hope something happens, being civil of course.

This forum has a majority of Democrats supporters and people who are more aligned with the left. The people who support Trump and the Republican Party aren't much vocal here. GAF doesn't accurately represent the USA population as a whole. I'm not even American.

How is it rigged if your chosen candidate (looking at your avatar) got in?

I voted for Hillary Clinton. And implicitly stated in my post the laws are rigged and are structured with the wrong priorties in mind via trade, inequality, and so on. That is obviously what I meant by rigged.

How are the establishment and the elites "paying a price" when the GOP and a billionaire practically have complete and utter power? This post makes no sense.

Donald rhetorically ran against many of the fundamental pillars of the GOP platform and plenty of elites didn't endorse or support him for POTUS that retained their seats. Folks wrote letters, ran ads, disassociated with him or kept him at arm's length. But this is Donald Trump's party and it's undeniable who has the most pull. Not their party. And obviously Democratic elites and established players don't support Donald Trump.

All the major players that opposed him failed in spectacular fashion. Now he will be one of the most powerful presdients in US history for a minimum of 2 years. The elites and the establishment paid a huge price because they have virtually no control and don't know what to expect from Pres. Trump. Should've taken criticism more seriously instead of treating it like an overblown joke.

I'm praying for that at this point. Or, at the very least, we can continue in some semblance of "business as usual" and the country doesn't totally go down the drain.

It's going to be regressive, especially economically. Socially progress will stall if not regress in many areas.

Scientifically we're screwed.

Trump's theoretical cabinet is full of mostly proven incompetent people who are just going to use these next few years to stuff their pockets and funnel money to friends.

Still in disbelief Clinton lost. This was suppose to be an easy win for her, but she dropped the ball unfortunately.

I live in a border town in Texas, so it'll be interesting to see how things go.

Well hopefully one day you'll realize you, and people like you, are part of the problem.

Its useless to try and empathize with people who agree and support such heinous views.

You either support it or not, and taking a side on these issues speaks loudly on the character of that person.

Yes. The echo chamber of Hillary support was so strong that even those of us who were voting for her, but thought that comments like the "deplorables" was unwise were shouted down for not blindly following every single step she took.
So many on PoliGAF shit on Nate Silver for being too pessimistic and cherished Sam Wang (who must surely be discredited for all time with his ">99%" bullshit). That stifled discussion.

While last night's result would have been a shock even without that echo chamber given all of the polling data it likely made it worse that we had so many people predicting 350+ EC votes for Hillary or landslide wins.

There is no scenario where this happens. His party controls all three branches of the federal government.
Key word being best. I'm well aware of the situation, which is unfortunate but I've got no reason to believe he has any interest in the presidency other than to stroke his ego and looking at how incompetently he's done things in his life thus far I wouldn't be surprised.

Even if that's the case, the GOP certainly has interest in his presidency and they'll make damn sure he signs some bills and appoints at least one Supreme Court justice in their favor.

Does Obama have to be present during the inauguration?

Obama has already made it very clear the transition will be a smooth one. So, he's obviously going to be there.

Lol, yes. He even has to speak to him face to face soon about sensitive material. God, this is terrifying.

They're likely meeting on Thursday. And Trump will start receiving full national security briefings almost immediately.

Donald Trump's entire campaign was built around antagonizing comments and it didn't drive his supporters away (or indeed turn out a coalition against him). Fox News and far right wing media like Drudge and Breitbart don't take the tone of "let's educate liberals so they can see things from our perspective." Why is it just on the left to treat the opposition like special snowflakes while the right is calling for Hillary to be thrown in jail and trying to ban brown-skinned people from entering the country? There is a giant rift in this country and it's not going to be solved if one side tries to acquiesce while the other maintains an extreme level of vitriol. The solution is probably not greater vitriol on both sides, obviously, but every other time our country has been as divided as this, it's taken an external factor (war or recession) to get us to move beyond our differences and identify as countrymen again. The answer can't just be "liberals were too mean."

McConnel already confirming they are going to repeal Obamacare I think I read. There goes my health insurance. Lots of people going to get deported too, which is far worse. At least he'll maybe force congressional term limits.

I live in a border town in Texas, so it'll be interesting to see how things go.

Citizens dropped the ball by not voting, or casting their vote for Gary Fucking Johnson. I mean, I wouldn't knock anyone if they wanted to vote for a good third party candidate, but this guy was a complete fucking moron. 90% of his votes probably came from stoners because he smokes weed.

Let's pray that whatever damage they manage to do ruins the public image of them and is also easily reversible.

Even if he doesnt, there are other Republicans waiting in the wings to whisper in his ear to make their agendas look favorable to him.

No, not really. The assumption that EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY Trump voter is a racist, sexist pig and has zero other relevant political interests other than to keep minorities and women down is a fault of about 95% of PoliGAF. All the hand waving was ridiculous before the election, but now with the results how they are they just dig themselves in deeper, just like those "deplorables" did when you called them racist and sexist and ignored any other concern.

As a suggestion, watch the speeches of Clinton, Obama, Ryan, and Trump.

Though there is little to be happy about today...at least each of them hit the right tone.

Im just starting small....looking for anything that can be positive about anybody. anything.

What if Trump suprises everyone and becomes a decent leader?

My hope is that he doesn't use as much extreme rhetoric. But the damage is done; he already stroked the flames of racism, Islamophobia and divisiveness and his followers want a revolution (or whatever)

I just hope he takes his position seriously.

Don't worry, it'll happen in Europe soon, and you'll get to be flabbergasted first hand.
