Protests against Trump in NYC and other cities

Yeah the mods are gonna have an interesting time sorting out the new ban rules. Right now its political talk and emotions are high, but hate speech will soon be more accepted. Recruitment going into overdrive at the KKK im sure.
No new rules. We don't care if hate speech is "accepted" elsewhere, just like we don't care that people can call each other "faggot" elsewhere.

If anyone would like to test that, feel free.

Regarding the protest, I think they're great. I think it is entirely appropriate that the people show their disgust and disdain for the person elected. It's not only the right, but the obligation of citizens to hold the government accountable, and make sure they know they are being watched.

What are they protesting exactly? I don't think the Republicans did that in 2008 when Obama won. Protest when he does something questionable after becoming president not when he won fair and square. Yes, he is a terrible person but this just feels wrong.

For the second time in less than 20 years the majority is being ruled by the minority. People are pissed because they think their vote doesn't count, and they're right. Rural America is free to screw over the rest of us any time they want. Republicans know they will never win the Presidency with the popular vote again.

That's just how democracy is. One side won. Hillary, Obama and Bernie urged everyone to give him a chance.

This.

Unless there is evidence that this election was "rigged" these protests are unfounded. What do they want? A recount? A re-vote? That is not how it works. Protest when he as a president actually harm your rights with policies.

Peaceful protests aren't going to achieve shit, I'm sorry guys.

Except the civil rights movement? Just like Occupy put Wall Street reform on the tickets of both candidates to even have a chance in this election? Jesus people need to realize just because you can't PERSONALLY see the change it could make in the immediate future does not mean the efforts are futile.

The MAIN FACT that we are even talking about these protests, that CNN is talking about them is already "achieving shit"

So withhold your narrow view point until you get educated on the importance of these protests. Please.

These protests seem to really be working. From Occupy to Trump, everything's coming up exactly how they wanted.

I think we need more.

When the Republican government starts trying to take away our rights, its already too late to start organizing.

Based on what Trump has promised to do in his presidency, we have an obligation to gather now and let them know we are watching and speaking out and will not tolerate human rights violations and dangerous acts that would endanger national security.

People are free to protest but should make it about the issues rather than the man.

that's what's being lost in all this, Trump is not the single form of evil, his policies which he SWITCHED to get elected are the issues

so the protestors should be aimed at the people who voted for him, not necessarily him

No. Not this. His first day proclamations and his platform is already enough to see what he will do to this country. Voter suppression to turn Blue states red, the archaic electoral college process. It's all already enough.

Or should we wait until he launches a nuke at Russia? Or should we wait until he takes away the gay marriage rights of people? Or should we wait until he lowers taxes for the rich (it's already confirmed he will) widening the gap between the rich and the poor?

Like what the hell are all people against protests waiting for!?

Here's a news flash for you, the 08 Financial Crisis and the ineffectuality of Government to respond to that is ALREADY enough impetus to have been protesting back then AND continued until today when STILL nothing has been done.

he lifted the rock and all the bugs spewed out. He is their voice, they fell free now

The aim is a declaration of defiance and show of force in numbers. By protesting now people are showing Trump exactly what they think of him in the most direct manner possible. It is now impossible for him or anyone else to claim that all of America supports him. This is a declaration - 'we won't go down quietly, this is only the beginning. We reject everything you stand for.'

I may very well take the three hour drive up to Alexandria and ride the Metro into D.C. if I can guarantee I won't be working on Jan. 20th. It's too far out for me to know that yet though.

America fucked up with that shitty turnout number. When the country is influential enough to affect countries around the whole world, it's really disappointing to see what happened from Europe. It's good to see that the people show that they will resist the regression that is about to follow. Go go go protestors!

Nah they were more insidious. They just sabotaged and obstructed everything Obama tried to do, to the extent of their capabilities for 8 years. Including not showing up to work and shutting down the government.

Any protests still being streamed?

I am happy people are protesting so long as this is a reminder to Trump and the Republican party itself that you cannot neglect the other half of the country, which is what people fear they will do.

It feels wrong to fucking protest a fear mongering, xenophobic racist, who has threatened free speech and the citizens who make use of it, a sexist with a history of sexual assault among countless other things?

Really that sounds wrong to you!?

My buds are protesting in Los Angeles. I got an early meeting so I can't be there. Parking would be impossible too, but do your thang.

It's obvious that this country is much more divided then it was 8 years ago. Not to mention, most people expected Hillary to win definitively. As a result, this is one of the most if not the most shocking presidential election in US history.

I think it's easily understandable why people are protesting. I have no doubt in my mind that the other side would be doing the same right now. Probably to a more extreme degree with Trump's fear mongering rhetoric.

People are free to protest but should make it about the issues rather than the man.

But they are. That man's behavior, views, issues, childishness, incompetent ideas (including not knowing how shit works in the very government he'll be responsible for, including on war with his surprise attack bs), and even general unfitness for the role, all of which have been on display for months on some of the biggest stages, are already the issue and have been since the beginning.

Where have you been for the past year? This is absolutely the time to protest against him and continue to protest him given the inflammatory garbage this inexcusable trash of a presidential candidate has said about Muslims, Hispanics, Asians, the handicapped, women and so on, because a man like him should never have been given the chance to get this far. However, if you'd prefer something more concrete, his running mate (likely to be the most powerful VP since Cheney, believes in conversion therapy) has already made plans to defund Planned Parenthood, allow people to discriminate against the LGTBQ community based on their religious beliefs and make birth control even more difficult to obtain. People are being attacked, be it physically or verbally, for their religion or their skin color when he hasn't even gotten the electorate vote because this racist piece of garbage has enabled them to be every bit as racist as they've always been, because his platform of bigotry and intolerance won out over a message of unity and diversity made it okay in their eyes to engage in these indefensible actions.

This is all happening and it's only Day 1. If I could (i'm from Canada), I would go over to one of these protests myself and join in because I can only imagine how bad it will get if people don't continue to speak up and let their voices be heard.

I thought what you said was already made clear enough by the vote last night.

Speaking out against an antiquated election method designed to enhance the impact of rural land owners while the loser received more votes is entirely understandable. Protesting against extremely real voter suppression laws that were mysteriously most prominent in states that flipped blue to red is entirely understandable.

On a spectrum of "is this worth protesting?" being able to actually voice your opinion and supporting the idea of One Person One Vote is pretty goddamn uncontroversial.

which proves my point, they are free now, trump going away is not going to change anything

Cruz was the second choice, he makes Trump look like Jimmy Carter

They are only free when they have him at the realm. They feel at ease when they know the person at the top is like them. Take him away and they go back into hiding

If it is about the system then protest BEFORE the election. Doing so after the result didn't go your way only makes the stand weak and protesters look salty.

For that side of the fence, yes. This is the other side. The end of the election doesn't mean people suddenly accept Trump wholesale.

EDIT: by the way, Clinton won the popular vote, so my point was decidedly not made clear enough by the vote results contrary to your statement.

This! Bad shit happens during Dubbya's run and nobody cleans it up. Plate gets dumped on Obama's desk and he tries and makes positive steps in doing so. Other things he wants to do are blocked by Republicans(Senate and House). After, Republicans mock Obama for not being able to do what he said he wanted to do(even though Republicans were the reason he couldn't), as well as how slow the job market is coming back(even though the Recession happened during a Republican Presidency and recovering from something like that takes time). It is sabotage where you screw up, make a mess and let the next person clean it up but keep on knocking the mop from their hands while saying, "Why aren't you cleaning it up?"

Before Trump the republican was moving very swiftly to the radical right by the tea party wing, this isn't a Trump issue, this has been going on years before he got here

And what should the end result of the protest be? For.Trump to go "nah you're bigly right, I'm not going to be president after all"?

Here are some quick points that protestors can hopefully rally behind. Call it the popular voters demands or something.
1. Confirm Merrick Garland's nomination for SCOTUS
2. Guarantee the safety of all people living in the US from hate crimes
3. Adhere to the terms of the Paris climate agreement/Iran nuclear deal
etc

You are missing the point entirely.

This isn't about getting a response. This is about sending a message.

"You may have been elected president, but I will not stand by you."

"I did not vote for you, and I will not support you."

"I stand against your beliefs and your lies."

The end result is showing that no matter what the majority of voters stand against him, that they will not tolerate his beliefs, that they the people are watching.

Seriously after that and 8 years of" Not my president" memes, I don't wanna hear a single thing about "respecting the president" or "Democratic processes." That is some hollow, hypocritical ass shit.

Public protest is one of the foundational rights of this country.

The end result should be (and is) a drawn line and declaration that things won't go as smoothly for Trump or his supporters as he and they hope in the coming years.

Fox News was left on our TV when I sat down in the living room. This "coverage" is disgusting. Megyn Kelly asked the guy on sight to pull aside someone and ask them if they voted, and who for, and if they heard the speeches of unity from Obama, Hillary, and Trump. Camera guy awkwardly points a camera to the face of a protester they just walked right up to, who they ask, "did you vote?" When asked on who, the protester said, "not your guy."

Fox had this dumb laugh exchange, where the on-sight guy goes, "Well, there it is, 'our guy', didn't know we had a guy." Megyn Kelly just muses, "People come to New York to make their voices heard, but NOT to Fox News; even though we're the biggest cable news."

They're both making me angry. Especially Kelly, since all she can talk about is how big (YUGE) Fox is, and why wouldn't people put out their voice to us????

Megan Kelly: "one thing you have to give Trump is that he engenders strong emotiond from his Supporters and Detractors."

"What is the goal??"
I DONT KNOW YOU TELL ME, BIGGEST NEWS STATION

Yeah, James Inhofe and Mitch McConnell scare the shit out of me. Knowing Trump works with them along with picking SC Justices worries me. We can only hope that after the people get a taste of what pure republican leadership is like they realize the error of their ways for the 2018 midterms and 2020 election.
