There should be protests everywhere and for the whole 4 years. Too much stuff just sails through our government without people taking a hard look at it and speaking up. It's not going to just be Donald Trump's actions, but the actions of all the political cronies he puts in power that hurts all Americans.

I think not slipping slowly into a fascist police state is worth a few inconveniences.

Exactly. The protests need to continue. 46% of this country couldn't be bothered to vote in this election, and the result is that a proto-fascist douchebag becoming the President elect. A statement has to be made, not just to the other side, but also to apathetic voters, and progressives in power, that this result is intolerable, that sloth and apathy don't yield positive results, and that we don't want compromise with a racist demagogue in the name of unity to justify his slim margin of victory.

So was Hitler. So was Mussolini. So were many other authoritarian strongmen that beat the drums of fascism to cater to small minds.

"He was elected" is a statement of fact. It is not a defense or a justification, and people need to understand that.
Hitler was appointed by the one who was elected, and absorbed his position when he died.

There's supposed to be a protest tonight and tomorrow in Columbus Ohio. I'm planning to go to tonight's protest but won't be able to go to tomorrow's.

Why am I going? Because I want him and any person that supports him that we won't put up with racism and hate. I know the protest won't change anything but we should always stand up and never be afraid for what America truly believes in.

I just want to get to and from class/work, and protestors are making that essentially impossible. It doesn't make me sympathize with them, it makes me hate them.

I'm well aware of the state of the presidency. Now get out of the road so I can continue to make a living.

Very disheartening. For some of us, our entire lives are gonna change, probably for the worse, and i for one am terrified about my future.

Sorry to inconvenience you.

Can we please not inconvenience Conkerkid11 with our petty fight for civil rights? Thanks in advance.

Wrong on both accounts. They both rose to power through military force. Killing all your political opposition isn't the same as winning a fairly contested democratic election.

You gotta be wise with your language man. If you're hating people who have legitimate reasons to be scared and the people who may not be as affected but actually give a shit to help, all because it is inconveniencing you in the moment, you gotta reevaluate yourself.

That last bit may be condescending and smug, so apologies. I mean well.

How ironic.
Democratic party supporters protest against democracy

It's not protesting against democracy. It's protesting against racism, hate, ignorance, etc.

Bernie said that we need to keep pressure on our government to do the right thing. Doing something to apply this pressure is better than nothing.

Protest away. I personally do not care if he was elected legitimately or not. Half of this country supports an openly racist, misogynistic demagogue. We are not just protesting him, we are protesting them. Racism is not okay. Misogyny is not okay. Hate crimes are not okay. Mocking the disabled is not okay. I don't care if 3/4 of the country voted for it, that does not make it acceptable. That does not mean we pack our bags and try again in a few years.

I've been keeping it together the last 48 hours but two people getting on the elevator at work talking about "sore losers" almost drove me over the edge.

We are frustrated, sad, and angry. We are dealing with this by having peaceful marches, letting people know that we are against this and will do everything in our power to hopefully not let it happen again.

Eight years ago, on day one, the republicans made a promise to make sure that the incoming president would not be able to do his job effectively.

One of these things seems like it was a principal america was founded on.

The other seems like something that a sore loser who doesn't play by the rules would do.

You should consider a little something called empathy.

Mussolini was elected to Parliament. Hitler was appointed by a democratically-elected official.

Are people seriously trying to argue that elections cannot lead to fascism? Is that the hill people are choosing to die on here?

People are simply historically ignorant. Not that that makes them any less incorrect, mind you. I absolutely agree with your sentiment.

Protests are a like, one of the main points of democracy. The only person being anti-democratic here is you. Well, you and the electoral college since democracy has been ignored , since Trump was elected despite the majority of people wanting Clinton.

I read a lot of election/presidential threads here and I noticed that no one defended his vote for Trump. Out of the 60 million voters, none of them are using this thread? I wonder!

This is how white liberals get so shocked. We can't trust each other not to be racist because it's so common, so it's never talked about, and shit like this country right now happens in secret. We've got a lot of secret racist friends.

I'm sure they all have Neogaf accounts to post here. I voted for Trump, bash away.

He lost the popular vote, and several of the states that flipped had voter suppression by GOP voter ID laws.

That's not very legitimate.

"States' Rights" is a legitimate bullshit thing in so many ways.

Federal elections should be controlled by a central, non-partisan authority. That way you can avoid all meddling that individual states engage in.

As much as I dislike trump, people really need to save their energy, avoid a boy who cried wolf type situation, and wait until he actually does something before protesting.

Edit: I realize this is badly worded but I'm too exhausted to try to fix it

You don't think his rhetoric is enough? "Ban Muslims", "Grab them by the Pussy", "Nasty Woman", "I would tell them to go Fuck themselves", "Look at my African American right there", "I know more about ISIS than the generals, believe me", "Fat pig", the list goes fucking on.....

46% of all voters didn't vote.

I think that speaks volumes too.

yup. this by far is more upsetting than the outcome of the election. so much of this country doesn't even care enough to go to the goddamned polling place once every couple of years and make their voice heard.

Yeah, let's wait for him to fuck shit up. With a red senate/house. Yeah. That'll for sure fucking work wonders.

And this is why he was elected in the first place.

Don't really follow your logic

Him being elected was a terrible thing.
The impression it gives the world of the US is appalling
But I think it's important to focus on mitigating the damage he does in the future instead of dwelling on the past
He is the next president of the United States and it is too late to change that now

I think a good first step would be protesting the electoral college instead of him in general for now

He is the next president of the United States and it is too late to change that now

We can undermine him at every opportunity and continue to signal to the rest of the world and society at large that none of this is okay.

Hell, the GOP has already been doing that for the past 8 years. What's good for the goose is good for the racist piece of shit.

These protests are going to help maintain the collective fervor that will be necessary to get mass organization when that time comes. Freedom to assembly is more than just a utilitarian political move; it's a way to affirm connections, identities and the like. The minute people slide into this being the new normal is the minute a fascist future for this country becomes possible.
