Did anyone notice that Trump barely seemed happy when holding his winning speech? In fact he seemed quite troubled. So did Melania. The atmosphere was quite weird.

You know, I thought the same thing. He seemed perplexed, honestly.

I have this (borderline irrational) conviction that he, for some reason, will not become president. I am in denial, sure, but I have this weird gut feeling that he doesn't ultimately accept.

I was having a conversation with my friend where he said Obama wasn't getting a lot done and a Trump Presidency is going to be good, And I'm trying to explain to him about then Republican obstructionism and he doesn't really believe me that it happened. Anyone know of any good articles explaining this? I am trying to find good stuff to explain my argument that is from reputable news sources

I still think GOP people or Pence himself will either try to ambush him or release something Grab them by the pussy thing to cause Trump to resign and them to take over...

He was probably stunned and exhausted like everyone else. You have to think he must have actually wanted this outcome for all the time, money, energy, and PR shit he went through over the last 2 years.

I don't know how much there is really to explain. While the president does have some direct authority to affect change through measures like executive orders, his role is not to pass legislation. When the house and senate are controlled by the opposition party for six of your 8 years, I'm not really sure what you expect. Bills have to be passed by Congress first before the president can sign them into law.

If the question is shifted to "why couldn't congress get anything done?", the answer becomes the filibuster and the power of the presidential veto. So at this juncture, both chambers of congress and the presidency being Republican controlled is a positive if your only metric of success is "did shit get done?" But if you care whether or not good shit is getting done, it obviously depends heavily on whether or not you're in favor of GOP/Trump policies.

He has given up the life of a carefree billionaire to go into the most stressful career in the world. Both of them have lost any semblance of freedom they once had and will now have the Secret Service following them wherever they go for the rest of their lives. No more going out to eat on a whim or taking the private jet to the Caribbean for a week or two. The President does not get that kind of freedom and cannot just up and travel whenever they feel like it. I do not think either of them are going to be able to adjust to what their lives are going to be like as President and First Lady.

I just got a thought related to Trump that made me smile for the first time in regards to this election: The thought of him or one of his insane potential staff members with a world leader like Angela Merkel. I mean, holy shit. She will wipe the floor with him so hard if Germany and the US are going to be at odds in a few areas. I just want to see him or Newt Gingrich debate her about wanting to quit their responsibilities regarding NATO, just as one example. She and Schäuble (minister of finances) do NOT fuck around on the international stage. Often I criticised that, for example in regards to how the people of Greece were treated. But man, am I looking forward to seeing these incompetent morons getting destroyed on the international stage. That theater bullshit of american politics does not fly on the international stage.

That's been the atmosphere all around where I'm at. Everyone is finally starting to take it in but still, more somber than I would have expected. I noticed the "Haha you dumb fucking liberals!" is becoming more prevalent as the dust settles.

*sigh*

Co-worker: "You realize that our first black president will be handing the keys to the Oval Office over to a man endorsed by the KKK, right?"

That's sadly true.

Next election, we don't just need to vote... we need to drag everyone in earshot to the polls as well.

He's been the most right, imo, other than dismissing Trump during the Summer of 2015 (changed by the end of the year).

538 also had Trump the highest odds of winning of any of the major modeling sites, with the exact explanation of what happened (a normal 2-percent error against her would leave her shockingly vulnerable to losing the EC)

Jesus that Romney 2012 map in that article was like a fucking crystal ball:

Electoral College: Make Hillary Clinton President on December 19

On December 19, the Electors of the Electoral College will cast their ballots. If they all vote the way their states voted, Donald Trump will win. However, they can vote for Hillary Clinton if they choose. Even in states where that is not allowed, their vote would still be counted, they would simply pay a small fine - which we can be sure Clinton supporters will be glad to pay!

We are calling on the Electors to ignore their states' votes and cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton. Why?

Mr. Trump is unfit to serve. His scapegoating of so many Americans, and his impulsivity, bullying, lying, admitted history of sexual assault, and utter lack of experience make him a danger to the Republic.

923,752 supporters so far.

I think there's even more to this.

If Trump didn't have all that "pussy-grabbing/daughter is a piece of ass/she's a pig/make my dinner" stuff come out, he would have beaten Hillary by a huge margin. I think many people generally hate Hillary and her liberal platform, but voted for her solely because of Trump's past comments.

The only thing that kept it close was Trump's comments from the past. I don't think hardly anyone had a problem with any of his actual policies or anything he said about Muslims or Mexicans. And if he wasn't such a creep to people and women in the past, he would have rolled though this election.

Trump pulled in people from the Right AND the Left.I don't think it was just disgruntled Bernie Bro's either. I think people are abandoning the Liberal Platform.

I think Liberal America is dying.

as someone from latin america im not as worried about Trump specifically as I am about just the world in general suddenly taking a fuckin hard Right turn, and what his victory means for that

France and Italy probably to follow...

it's pretty crazy. Lot of progress previous generations worked hard for us to enjoy halted or even set back.

after Venezuela, fuckin Macri's Argentina now..

boy.

Agreed my fellow Latino.

Is a trend I've seen growing up for the last few years.
It seems western civilization is taking some growing pains on globalization.

Clinton already conceded. I wouldn't be surprised if she openly says no to this if it gains enough traction

Yeah. It would be bad for democracy for her to contest things further. The only way anything happens is if a tremendous shitstorm of controversies erupt now that the media doesn't piss away its time covering the same two scandals.

I mean, imagine you're just about to finish the presidential race and are on your way out, only for the complete opposite to happen and congratulations, you've now got the most stressful job in the planet for the next four years!

It's gonna be shocking because 1) he didn't actually want the job, and 2) he and everyone around him was 100% sure that he was gonna lose. Running Trump TV would've been far, far, far easier (and way more profitable!)

Yep. Trump may be our most naive and downright fucking stupid president we've ever had.

He is no where equipped to handle this job. He is going to get played like a motherfucking fiddle

"We are calling on the Electors to ignore their states' votes and cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton."

Sure, go ahead and do that. Seems wise.

Getting 30+ faithless electors to switch from Trump to Clinton is impossible, and even if they somehow did, it'd be suicide for that many people to do it.

Plus Clinton already conceded. It's over. We aren't having another 2000, thankfully. That was awful.

becoming president of the USA is the highest high an egomaniac like trump can get. I wish I could get that high.

In the UK it's a weekday for as long as I can remember, but they open really early and shut really late, is the US not the same? Are the only open office hours or something?

If the excuse is 'I've been in work all day and am too tired to vote', then that is not an excuse. It is just lazy. That is a flaw with people, not the day you cast your vote.

I agree with your general sentiment but disagree with your conclusion. People are tired of the DNC and the establishment. Trump fed off of that. As you said, there were plenty of disgruntled Bernie fans that voted against Clinton. Doubt those supporters aren't some form of Liberal. I don't think Liberal America is dying, just the current state of the Democrats.

I have a question, maybe worth of a new thread but don't usually like making those

What if it went like people were predicting early last year, Jeb or Marco Rubio (or relaly any other establishment candidate) vs Clinton
would they have been able to win? assuming they would have done what reps have been saying for years since 2012, court the hispanic vote. I know they probably couldn't have carried the rust belt states, but what about New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada?

the prevailing theory for months has been that Trump is the worst possible candidate they could have chosen, is that still true in hindsight? would the others been able to win in a bigger way

In most cases, I would say that an elector should do what rules say. We agreed to them, after all, even if their not perfect.

Furthermore, this would have an unprecedented impact on our democracy and it would forever cast a shadow under the legitimacy of Clinton's hold.

And anyway, the Republicans hold the Senate and the house. We'd be getting 4 more years of gridlock except now they would have a legitimate reason to pull shit like refusing to accept Clinton's nominations for the Supreme Court.

But this is the godzilla threshold. There is nothing that could be more damaging to America than a Trump presidency. So I would support it.

Americans work 28 hours a day though

Oh yeah, I know something like this isn't possible. I just found that particular line in the petition to be pretty damn insane.

There wouldn't have been any Wikileaks about Bernie. Bernie doesn't run a fake charity which is really just a personal bank account for donations from Saudi Arabia, China, wall Street, Russia, etc

Should have nominated Bernie. Hillary's 'deny it till you die' attitude ruined her campaign. If she had been honest about the Wikileaks material from the beginning she would have had a better chance of flipping the narrative.

It turns out Americans do care about Wikileaks.

Well, maybe they think they can't win a discussion? I feel like anytime someone brings up a counter-argument with evidence it's the same old shit. 'nope, wrong, fuck off.'

I mean, the guy's spot on. It's been 20-30 years of fear mongering bullshit towards Conservatives, and what'd Conservatives do? Okay, here's a guy you say he is, but it never fucking sticks except for one comment and if it didn't, the race would've been a blowout on all sides (and EC wise, was, to the media's surprise).

This one thing, this one talking point about telling Conservatives they're fucking evil is probably what's halted progress more than anything in this country, and divided us more than anything else. We don't talk to people anymore. One side yells until the other gets frustrated and walks away.
