Trump arriving at White House to meet Obama. WH staff :

Somehow I saw every face except for the lady in full blown tears first. What a heart break.

Anyone remember the days following 9-11?

That strange, anxious & vaguely dissociative, "Is this a dream?" kind of feeling?

Yeah, I just realized this is how I've been feeling post election.

Thank you for this. I couldn't quite sum up the feeling I've been having, but it's exactly that. I felt the same way after 9/11, especially living close by at the time.

Yeah that's the same way I've been feeling. It seems weird to have that feeling because the two events are obviously very dissimilar.

You really haven't seen the reports of violence in all of these protests? These people seem to think that burning flags and inciting violence and impeding traffic will somehow magically change the election results. Maybe I'm just getting old but I am really getting sick of this entitled generation that is growing up.

Oh jeeeeeez, people don't want basic human rights to be taken away? FUCKING ENTITLED MILLENIALS"!!!!!!
Burning flags is both justified and protected by the most important document of the United States? Inciting violence? Have you seen the fucking huge ammount of violent bullshit trump supporters did after winning?

I actually think Trumps narcissism may be a glimmer of hope in all this. Think about it. The man has a huge need to be seen as the best, most greatest guy. He is addicted to positive attention and praise. When he gets negative attention, he lashed out like a child.

Here's where the good comes in: He definitely does not want to go down in history as one of the worst mistakes in not only U.S. history, but world history. If he is a majorly unpopular President, and receives way more scorn than praise, his legacy will be forever tarnished, not only as a President but as a man and businessman. History will judge him forever as a joke. No one would look back at Trump in 20-50 years or more and see anything other than some buffoon who lucked his way into the White House, and it will be used as a lesson as why voting is so important to school kids. Not because the vote got him in, but because NOT enough voting did.

His buildings, casinos, hotels, all with his name would become monuments to failure. Going down in history is one thing, going down in history as one of the worst things to happen to mankind and the world is another. His ego couldn't take it.

So Trumps own need for validation on how great he is, may actually somehow lead to some good. But I'm not holding my breath.

Yup.

I live in NoVA and work in DC.

In the days following 9/11 there were gun-mounted military humvees strategically parked close-to and around the White House and Pentagon. I work 2 blocks north of the WH and passed by one every day.

The silence of the morning commute crowd getting off of DC Metrorail was deafening. Everybody walking with their heads down and in a fog.

That's exactly how it feels this week.

Yes so shameful that they won't shut up and sit down and don't know their place.

Get fucked.

That is a bit extreme. I probably won't be saluting the flag or saying the pledge of allegiance with Trump as President. I don't believe in his America.

Everyone has the right to protest, but burn the flag? Is it acceptable to you? For me, NO!

It is. I may not love it but I will defend their right to do it.

As I said in the other thread, I prefer this to making promises of running an obstructionist government for the next four years.

THAT is unacceptable to me.

My girlfriend works in contracts and a lot of her work stories involve parsing the "the letter of the law" and the "spirit of the law"

Burning the flag is very very very much in the spirit of the law.

Grinding the government to a halt is not, even if done legally.

Have you seen his choices for cabinet? I agree, don't hold your breath

Considering who he just appointed as head of EPA, his strategy seems to be ensuring there's no-one left alive in the future to think back to his presidency.

It's a piece of fabric that means nothing, just as every other flag. There are no american values, there is no inherent meaning. It's fabric you project your own thoughts and romantic feelings of what a Utopia should look like on. And for half of the country that Utopia is a racist, homo- and transphobic hellhole lead by christian extremists.

You think this country is bad? You really should get out more. Learn about the world.

Its incredible just how bleak everything feels. I don't even want to leave the house.

For what is a modern country, your new commander in chief has some of the worst ideologies ever.

The American flag is now dirty and I shall now look at it with disgust.

Yeah, I have kinda the same feeling
Not as bad, but in the same arena

Devastatingly strong words from the New York Times...

WASHINGTON — No one in Europe truly believed Americans would elect someone who seems so obviously unfit to lead the most powerful nation in the world. And yet, that is precisely what has happened, and now, across the Continent, people are trying to figure out what this will mean. Many fear that Donald J. Trump’s election might mean the end of the West as we know it.

"I mean, hey, at least we are not literally executing homosexuals! That's a win? Right? Eh?"

I'm from Germany and I have a pretty good grasp on European politics I'd say. There are few countries in the western world that are as fucked as the United States. This country was pretty fucked before and way worse off in pretty much every area possible except military spending (which makes the repeated and utterly empty "We are better than this! Greatest County In the World! Land of Opportunities! Land of the Free!" proclamations as a sign of defiance from various late night shows in response to this all the more baseless), but this divide will now be multiplied by who ever knows how much. As I said: People who would belong in the most right-wing extremist party possible in Germany, the NPD, are leading the US from now on. That is what your flag represents.

Kasich didn't want to be VP for a racist douche. Kasich probably cares for the job way to much.

Okay, thanks. Far from ideal but he seemed the only reasonable guy left in that Carnival of Stupid.

I still feeling terrible about this all. Can we dream about something like.... eh.... someone like Tom Hanks or George Clooney or Olympic Speed Skate champion Joey Cheek becoming a Democratic Ronald Reagan?

...who have voted for this president or decided they didn't want to vote against him.

Indeed.

I'm just as disappointed with the voting results.

I even felt ashamed to be an American the day after the election.

But you know what? I'm glad that to live in a country where everyone has a voice.

It won't always go my way, but that's the nature of democracy.

I'm still shell-shocked, but I'm a tad more optimistic today. I think we're in for a rough ride, but I also think we'll make it out alive.

In addition, think it will be a positive wake-up call for equality and basic human rights for all. In the wake of seeing them challenged, I believe more will act instead of sitting idly by and watching from the sidelines.

I think more people are going to look out for each other in the wake of hostility Trump has normalized. Call it a push-back to his hate-rhetoric.

Exactly. Hate the term deplorables? Suck it up, and wear the hat that fits, you guys are good at that
To be honest I'm retiring that word. Trump's supporters very quickly appropriated it and owned it. It was their version of "nasty woman".

Is that you in the avatar pic? If yes, then yes, you will be just fine.

The said thing is that everyone may have a voice, but that's not what happened here. A quarter of voters decided the country's political future for everyone. And half didn't speak at all.

Honestly if Kasich was the nominee this would have really been a landslide in his favor.

Much has been said about race and gender in how you will fare under Trump, but in the end I think class is far more of a factor.

How the narrative became that Trump is the candidate for the working class... stunning. The rich businessman going to cut taxes and empower corporate interests is going to be good for poor people.... riiight.
