Rowlet is slow and would get murdered by ice-types and fire types, both of which are common. Rowlet's also slow for a defog user. Spirit Shackle also doesn't have much competitive use. Throat Chop could be better competitively. Incineroar has a good offensive typing and has better defensive and offensive stats than Arcanine.

Any starter is viable if you get a good core*, some pokémons to help with their weaknesses.
Gumshoos was an amazing partner for my Decidueye, being Normal I could get a free switch against ghost enemies that tried to take Deci out with ghost-type moves. Same with my Arcanine that had Flash Fire, another free switch when meeting fire enemies (I use battle mode = set).
*(It wasn't enough for me though since I wanted to rush the game, but the thought is valid IMO. If I were playing like I'm used to it would've worked)

It's speed is shit for its typing and it lacks good priority unlike Arcanine. Also until it's hidden ability is available, it won't have access to intimidate

It still gets Intimidate though. Also is immune to Prankster, thanks to dark typing. It sacrifices speed for better bulk than Arcanine, so it'll be better on switch-ins.

Welcome guys! You're finally here. We've waited along time for this.
NUMBER 1 : CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION
This is one of the main things Im really excited to see as the game releases. The clothing options are super varied and with 4 different skin tones and multiple hair style options, There is sooooo much variety to making your trainer represent you! Fashion options found all throughout the game, you will vary easily be able to put together a style that represents your team and your swagger! Even battle style mannerisms and your trainer picture can be chosen, Really makes the fun feel engaging. The story of sun and moon becomes your story.
NUMBER 2 : THE WORLD
Ive said before that Ive never felt captivated by the overworld in a Pokemon Game before. X & Y was cool but didn't really do anything aside from bringing the game into 3D. Sun & Moon...... clearly show a lot of love and thought when it comes to Alola. I love playing because Alola is just a fun place to be. The islands all represent their own things and have their own culture. Routes and Cities and Landmarks blend together seamlessly and traveling for the first time really brings awe-inspiring moments of discovery. GF did a fantastic job creating the Alola region, Its a 20th celebration for sure.
NUMBER 3 : THE MUSIC
If you game with headphones, plug them in and enjoy. If you normally don't, I suggest you do and take in the absolutely beautiful music production. I was completely enamored and I never pay attention to pkmn music in most of the games.
Sun and Moon's score completely grabs your ears and gives you all of the perfect chords and harmonies to tell a story. And it call comes at the right time. Absolutely beautiful songs like : The Clothing Store, Panolia Ranch (Night), Trainer Battle Theme, Team Skull theme, Maile Garden, Guzma's Theme ... And so much more.
Ill be buying the soundtrack ASAP, A first for me with VG music.
I hope everyone is super excited. The game is beautiful. Just enjoy the ride.
PokeGAF Note: I just got a Ditto, So baby Littens are here. Of course Im looking for any Rowlets and Popplios. I have no problem giving people baby anythings. For right now, no expectation on proper natures, just species.

Same here. To me, they are something to be collected and catalogued. I feel that nicknames are less conducive to such a practice.

Incineroar is already slow, Its fine, because he hits like a brick. Def the champ of the ring. Darkest Lariat just lays out everything Ive fought and Im not properly EV'd. I need to explore his move pool but Im sure it gets better.
Primarina plays the same as her physical counterpart, Azumarill, who became a staple in OU last gen, either you go fucking big or go fucking home.
Modest nature, all attacking moves, slap on Choice Specs/Assault Vest, 252 EV's in both HP and Special Attack and then just fucking go for it.

I will say I will agree with others and that the storyline and game is refreshing. I can't quite predict where the story will go now that Gym Leader and other predictable elements have been thrown out. So is Rowlet. Incineroar is nothing like Arcanine. Incineroar is better offensively than Arcanine while having better bulk. He doesn't need priority to be successful. I'm not saying that Decidueye will be bad-he'll probably end up in UU. Incineroar probably will as well.

Eh, from what I've seen the customisation looks worse than XY. Like there are more colours and colour varients but less options. It's like t-shirt or tank top and shorts or capris. It seems better for girls though and probably also was in XY but for a boy, from what I've seen, I'm disappointed. I guess it's because of the climate?

I'm wondering if Decidueye is fast enough to go Jolly or if Adamant just works. Its special movepool is quite poor and it gets good physical moves by level up.

Since we're talking about positives, mine are:
+ Best pokédex ever, surprisingly good idea. Rotom is one of the best characters in the game, not joking;
+ Best pokémon teacher ever made, Kukui is just amazing;
+ Never felt so connected to a legendary, which leads to:
+ Best legendary duo since R/S/E (IMO, obviously, and not talking about competitive);
+ Best story in a Pokémon game. Still not really good but compared to the other ones this is legit. Don’t expect many twists and turns, it’s more telegraphed than WWE;
+ Customization is back and it looks cool;
+ IV training will save me weeks/months of SRing;
+ Goodbye HMs, you won’t be missed. Summoning pokémons is one of the best features they ever made;
+ Pokémon Amie now can even heal statuses after battling, saved me a lot of money;
+ Sidequests. Yes, really, you can sometimes find sidequests by talking to people, they range from

Very last island. And it does take a while to get there. Its the last I need on my team too so anyone looking for it should reevaluate the game.
There are fantastic options from the very beginning of the game. I rolled with Chargabug who's been the homie since Route 1 Lol. Along the way I used gumshoos, formantis, rockruff. All were awesome.
My team now is Incineroar, Salazzle, golisopod, Charga, Aquanid, lycanroc midnight to be replaced with komoo-o. But lycanroc is a dope Mon by all means

Nice team. I ended up using Metagross, Arcanine, Gumshoos, Decidueye, Lycanroc and Wishiwashi (that got benched for Lunala). It was too late for me to change teams when I discovered where I could get pokémon that I actually wanted.
Metagross just Meteor Mash'd everything through its path though, jesus.
Can someone explain this to me. I'm not very pokemon savvy these days. What do You guys mean by hidden ability. Don't all pokemon have abilities in general. How is intimidate hidden and how do you make it available?

I did the same last Gen for someone else. Midnight for me is just under 5 hours plus my drive back. I can get you the starters as soon as I can trade. Just let me know how you want to set it up. I'll evolve a Lycanroc Day for you as well.
I used to not care either. In my recent playthroughs of pokemon games I started to, however, but if I ever went for cataloguing them in a dex, I probably wouldn't bother.
This time around, I am incredibly excited to name my Popplio after Freddie Mercury (That male ratio yo'). Very excited for Primarina, might be my favorite starter yet!
Most pokemon have two normal abilities (in some cases, only one) and this is usually how you get them in the wild. However some have a special "hidden" ability on top of that, which you can only get in certain conditions (Gen 5 you can get them through the dream world, in gen 6 chaining with the dexnav, etc, although I don't know the exact specifics because I'm a tad out of touch as well )

It's something that was introduced in Gen 5. Every pokemon has a set of abilities. Hidden Abilities are abilities that are not normally part of their ability set. Most of the time, they're better abilities and cannot be found normally.

Pokemon can normally have up to two abilities. But most pokemon also have a third, hidden ability that can't be gotten normally by breeding (unless you're breeding a member of the same species with the hidden ability) or catching. You can get them through various means, such as events, friend safari in XY, or in this game through chaining pokemon in sos battles. But since you can't chain starters, there is no way to get the hidden ability of any of the Alola starters yet

My big concern now is getting the two starters I won't start with. My plan was to breed previous gen starters and put them on GTS for them but apparently Pokemon Bank won't work with Sun and Moon until January.

All pokemon have a range of either one or two abilities in the wild but they often have a 3rd that isn't readily available and can make the difference between a pokemon that is competitive viable or not. Typically these are acquired via creative ways outside of catching pokemon in the wild.
Last gen, these hidden abilities were acquired via the Friend Safari in X & Y and via DexNav chaining in OR/AS. This time around they're acquired via SOS chaining... but the starters are out of luck in this respect due to not being available in this fashion (last gen's starters were in the Friend Safari). Anyone with a Protean Greninja or a Contrary Serperior can tell you what a difference maker a hidden ability can be.
I kinda wish you would say it, since i've been hearing good things for weeks, maybe months! I already bought it, and I know myself pretty well to know that I'll like the game very much, but it'd be good to know what to expect.

Well, there are probably better explanations but one quick and dirty is that pokémons have a second (or third) ability, that you can't usually find in the wild easily.
Usually there are ways to get those hidden abilities within the games, but most of the times you will need to be able to capture that pokémon in the wild (X/Y had a Friend Safari with that, older games had Dream World, etc). Since currently people did not find a way to capture starters, you can't get them with the hidden abilities, while normal pokémons you might be able to by chaining pokémons during wild battles, a new mechanic.
Most of the negatives are things that annoyed me (like how they completely ruined fishing IMO, or how the frame rate is plain garbage and completely unacceptable in the OG 3DS), but I'm usually overly harsh with some stuff so it might not be as bad as I think for some other people.
Yeah. These next 2.5 hours are going to be brutal.
