Rumour: Nintendo aiming for Zelda BotW release on June 16 (EUR), Switch release first

I hope all of the recent rumours are not true. My initial Switch hype coming from the reveal trailer died pretty quickly in the last weeks. Not going to repeat my WiiU mistake, not going to buy a portable remaster machine :(

Nintendo, pls get your shit together or go 3rd party

I dont care as long as the next zelda doesnt take that long again. Waiting times between mainline title have become annoyingly long. Skyward was delayed also and they didnt begin Brainstorming until months after its Release..

Now with the fabled home/portable sector combined I hope they are already working on the next zelda. Or give me a Majora with botw assets!
Agreed Zelda should release every 2.5 to 3 years now imo.

How would this encourage their employees to violate their contract? I assume, see my mention of wrongdoing earlier, that the leaker was not (monetarily) rewarded.
This is about how Nintendo deals with the press. The leaker violated a contract. Very different situation.

I guess I'm wrong there; but that doesn't negate that there is little reason for Nintendo to actively reward people reporting on leaks and I'm sure it would be the same for every single other company. They're not going against free press because LKD can still report on leaks and review Nintendo products to her hearts content, she just won't get any help from Nintendo in doing so.

Privileges* can be taken away if they do not comply, as we have just seen (or rather I am writing under that assumption, as we do not have confirmation as far as I know). Who is to say this will never happen if e.g. a journalist extensively covered Nintendo in a critical manner? We know companies can be extremely petty. They're not giving out stuff because they like people after all, but because they see a benefit.
*Given the possible importance this term might be misleading, but it serves well enough nonetheless. I do think the term is not too farfetched, given the purpose it serves.

That's a pretty steep slippery slope you've got going there. Where is there a precedent that Nintendo would do such a thing? Nintendo hasn't blacklisted GameXplain despite them actively reporting on and doing 30 minute plus discussions on all of the leaks coming out. By creating such a situation you're arguing that companies should not have the right to blacklist (which is, again, simply not giving them review copies or inviting them to events) people at all.

No company should be obligated to give out marketing material to journalists the same way no journalist should be obligated to silence themselves to help out a company.

Well it's a Wii U game. Why wouldn't they release it for Wii U?

short answer: Wii U a shit

slightly longer answer: It is no longer an especially profitable thing to do, magnified by the fact that the Switch (that thing the future of the company is riding on) will have been out for three months at that point. The Wii U market will be rapidly shrinking from the pittance it already is, and from a marketers pov those who still have a Wii U then will be less likely to get that version of BotW due to the mere existence of the Switch version, something they may be saving up for/waiting for a deal on.

In the cutthroat business that is video games, releasing BotW Wii U is a major courtesy. Be glad if it's even just a digital version.

Its true, the gamepad does not have a map anymore. It did at the game awards but the most recent build was very much a one screen experience. Shame since WWHD and TTHD had such a brilliant setup.

Good lord that sounds like a terribe step back for my tastes. Sigh, I'm confident the base game will be great, at least.

The demo only had static control instructions and was already having frame-rate woes. Do the math.
I've never given much attention to the demos honestly. I saw a few minutes, liked it, and went on a blackout from there on out. Almost everything in the e3 demo is unknown to me.

Zelda releases should be something special. So I don't have any objection to console games releasing with a 4-5 year gap. In-between they can always release gems like Spirit Tracks or A Link Between Worlds.

(But please no more Tri Force Heroes-esque games.)

Not as bad as this.

Lol, shit I thought Nintendo was bad about this stuff.

Jesus, these rumours never end. I'm okay with it though seemings how we'd have to wait until the middle of january for any news anyway.

Worth mentioning the other info too : the Xenoblade X port is handled externally, while Monolith Soft is working on his own project.

Awwww yeeeah! That's what I assumed, buy still glad to hear.

I know it makes sense financially, but Nintendo's willingness to toss WiiU owners under a bus for the sake Switch sales is really not treating their customers well.

I mean sure, they're mostly hardcore Nintendo fans and will somehow see the WiiU version's delay as a positive, but still, shifty behaviour by Nintendo.

In fact I wouldn't be at all surprised if the WiiU version were actually already finished, and the delays are purely driven by the Switch port.
Yep. This game will be the last money i will give to Nintendo in quite a long time. After the wiiu, i have no intention of buying the switch and all those decisions only cements mine.

I hope that pays off for them.

Nintendo sold Wii U systems on the promise of a new Zelda game. If they don't deliver that game they're telling people not to trust them to deliver in the future.

Also, if this rumor is true, I'd bet the Switch launches with Zelda in June. There's no reason to delay the Wii U version a week if the Switch has been available for months.

I only have a WiiU because of this game lmao. A week or so delay won't hurt I guess but it's still pretty stupid imo. Definitely not buying a Switch, at least not around launch, not making that mistake again.

On this day i'll attend the metal festival hellfest for 3 days. Each year, I'm depressed when it's over, but having zelda to play when coming home would be a nice way to chill out!

I don't see the big deal in a one week delay for the Wii U. Frankly, I'm surprised it's still coming to the Wii U. I mean, Nintendo didn't even release ANY holiday title for the system, not even crappy titles like they did last year with Animal Crossing and Mario Tennis. And I'm glad it's still coming to the Wii U because I won't be getting a Switch at launch. I want to see how the third party situation works itself out.

they are delivering that game though

Pretty smart but kind of anti consumer.
They will get quite a few diehards to buy a switch and botw solely because it isn't coming as soon to Wii u. Most likely a lot of those people would eventually picked up a switch anyway for other titles and a probable Zelda double dip, but this will help them with their upfront switch adoption.

Not sure why people are upset with Nintendo. The Wii u had far longer life than it probably deserved and Nintendo supported it how they could. Zelda is still coming and it seems like the versions are shipping around the same time unlike twilight princess.

Because there is practically 0 reason to do it. The wii u sales aren't going to hurt switch sales in any meaningful way.

Someone posted earlier that it would alleviate any potential confusion about which version works with which device. I don't know if that confusion would happen (probably not) but it's at least an excuse.

Also they may want to have as much shelf space at retail dedicated to the Switch version, so they'll put off releasing the Wii U version by one week to get those shipments separated.

In Europe it was also just a week's difference with TP.
NA will once again get a monthly gap.

Oh... oh... stop right there. That's all that matters.

Zelda will be their biggest game of the year. If they need to keep it in the cooker until late Q2 then so be it. If it's a timing thing more than development thing then Nintendo is just trying to be strategic and I understand.

As for the Wii U version of BotW, the swan song for the system, it's still a strong title but at this point it seems like an afterthought. I was always 100% in on the Switch version anyway but for those who just wanted one last big game for Wii U the news is a little sad.

I mean... I'm buying a Switch but I have a Wii U version price locked in at sub $50cdn with Amazon so this kinda sucks. I'd like to see how much better it is on Switch.
