Rumour: Nintendo aiming for Zelda BotW release on June 16 (EUR), Switch release first

Yea, I know we all want Zelda as soon as possible but I think this is the better strategy for Nintendo. The Switch will have good sales at launch due to 3D Mario. Zelda will hit in June and add to the momentum. Compare that to the Wii U and it launched fine with New Super Mario U, but quickly lost momentum because there weren't enough releases after launch. Zelda will ensure that doesn't happen on Switch and will help it gain momentum.

Edit: Of course they need to have some games ready for holiday 2017 but that shouldn't be an issue I hope.

Yes! 2017 is aiming to be leagues better than Wii U's first disastrous year. The fact that even Mr. Iwata (RIP) had to apologize for the lack of games on the first semester of Wii U was very depressing. But it seems Nintendo has now learned from those dark times and they have the whole 2017 covered to keep a steady lineup of games through the year without droughts. It will help even more if 3rd parties keep supporting the console through the year and not just when it launches in March.

Yeah, but people that own Wii U are the hardcore Nintendo fans. They will be Switch's early adopters and I have a hard time imagining any of them choosing to buy Zelda for Wii U instead of buying it for their new shiny console.
I know quite a few wiiu owners and no one is buying a switch next year (or ever). People jump into conclusions too fast about that. Not only Nintendo "hardcore" bought the system and many people felt burned about nintendo's treatment. This is just icing in the cake to me. Will wait to get on Second hands just so that Nintendo won't get a dime from me.

I knew they would do this.

I mean, at least the GameCube had Wind Waker. Wii U won't even get an original Zelda title until after the launch of its successor console. Shit.

August would have been a better month. Also, I would use the time between Switch launch and then to evaluate the pros and cons of a simultaneous Wii & Switch release.

short answer: Wii U a shit

slightly longer answer: It is no longer an especially profitable thing to do, magnified by the fact that the Switch (that thing the future of the company is riding on) will have been out for three months at that point. The Wii U market will be rapidly shrinking from the pittance it already is, and from a marketers pov those who still have a Wii U then will be less likely to get that version of BotW due to the mere existence of the Switch version, something they may be saving up for/waiting for a deal on.

In the cutthroat business that is video games, releasing BotW Wii U is a major courtesy. Be glad if it's even just a digital version.

You should look at the attach rate of some the first party Nintendo games. Considering Nintendo said they only need to sale 2 million copies to break even for Zelda BotW, I'm sure if it was to only be released of the Wii U, it would have had broke that 2 million figure made Nintendo money.

This is a forum full of losers who talk about video games all day, just because a lot of Gaf Wii U owners are buying a Switch day 1 doesn't mean that normal people are. Stop trying to make excuses for Nintendo's shitty business practices.

there's like 8 normal people that actually bought a wii u though

See you in a few months bro

It's one week.

Angering your hardcore fans isn't that good of an idea.

lol no one bought a Wii U. World don't care.

Those two dates are actually a lot closer than I thought they'd be. I was sur there'd be a month in between like Twilight Princess.

BotW is the literal last thing being sold for the Wii U. Nintendo has every incentive to encourage fans to buy the Switch version over the Wii U version. I wouldn't expect a large run of Wii U copies, either.

It will be on store shelves to buy in August you can buy it after you evaluate the pros and cons.

I can't imagine waiting a week later for this

The game has been rated in Australia. That would mean it has already been localized. Does the facts contradicts this rumor ?

do you really want Nintendo to join the day one patches club?

I don't really want to see this game get monthly patches. until summer to get it right. I want polish this is worth the wait.

I feel that the first quarter of 2017 is packed enough with quality games, but I expected being able to get a switch with zelda. Because, none of the other launch games interest me as much.

Don't assume that hardcore Nintendo fan = has $400ish spare dollars for the system, game + taxes at launch. Like I said before, Nintendo's not selling 13 million Switches in the first 3 months. They're even manufacturing that many.

And this is what Nintendo needs to be extreme careful about. Don't take your customers for granted.

These news just keep getting better for people who bought the WiiU for Zelda.

I own a WiiU. I wouldn't consider myself a hardcore Nintendo fan by any measures, at least not since the SNES.

It wouldn't be enough enough that they supported the Wii U? Nintendo really want to push loyal supporters to the Switch that badly - they bought the Wii U, they're diehard, they're buying a Switch regardless.

I hope the rumour isn't true.

The game should have been out on the WiIU by now, Nintendo are holding it back for Switch, doesn't look promising to me, don't they have anything else in the works?

I will pick this up for my WiiU (if it still gets a release) when the price drops, I'm not going to be taken for a mug by Nintendo again.

lol no one bought a Wii U. World don't care.

And it seems that all these people that didn't buy a WiiU cannot wait to play all the WiiU ports on the Switch, how ironic.

Buy a WiiU copy and get a Switch version for free, but that still wouldn't be enough for me tbh.

And they should be angry at Nintendo for screwing them over.

And it's still a shitty thing to do. There's no way that the Wii U version takes an extra week of work to complete.

Of course not, and nobody here believes that. It is without a doubt a business decision made to promote the Switch version.

But a week is a drop in the bucket compared to how long we've been waiting for this game anyway. Even if I wasn't getting the Switch version, I wouldn't really be bothered by this and I certainly wouldn't feel "screwed over".

I don't intend to buy a Switch, I got a WiiU (and 3DS) at launch and still have both, not wanting to go far off topic, but what was the point in my buying a WiiU when the Switch is going to get loads of ports of the best WiiU games.

The point is you got to play those games years earlier than you would have otherwise? This is like asking what the point of the Gamecube was since Wii was BC.

lmao people, is just a week.

Maybe is because I'm from Europe and we usually get the games later, but waiting one week to get a game is such a no event.

I know some people just like to shit on Nintendo, but you should find more compelling arguments. A week is a fucking joke.

People sure are irrational when it comes to Nintendo, huh? I get that Nintendo games are associated with a lot of great childhood memories, so it makes sense that people have a more emotional attachment to them than a lot of other brands, but getting so mad over Zelda delays just makes no sense and is really shortchanging the amount of effort that is obviously going into this game.

I think it's kind of an unfair perspective to say that Nintendo is holding back what is undoubtedly their most ambitious game of all time when internally people are slaving away to try and get this thing out as soon as possible. You think they wouldn't have launched the Switch this Fall with Zelda if it had been possible? That's completely glossing over how difficult game development is and the unforeseen hurdles that a game of this scope placed in front of Nintendo. Instead of getting so mad about what will ultimately be an inconsequential delay in the grand scheme of things, why can't we just be excited to get a Zelda game that looks to push the boundaries of Nintendo's game design philosophies into exciting new directions?

Normal people?

Be honest - how many normal, non-enthusiast gamers do you know with a Wii U in their home?

I'm sure others have said it but if this thing launches with Mario 3D and Splatoon and then gets Zelda 3 months later, wow. It'll be a very impressive start.

Buy a WiiU copy and get a Switch version for free, but that still wouldn't be enough for me tbh.

You know Nintendo games don't drop until forever and price and if it's like Twilight Princess Gamecube expect it to be a rarer game for Wii U. And yeah people who didn't buy a Wii U are excited to play Wii U ports, cause the Wii U held back a ton of games from reaching a bigger audience.

But there's a point to the comment... The Wii U was a dud and this new Zelda looks like it's going to be a major system seller. They want the Switch to succeed. Any little nod or nudge they could give towards their new system will help them long term.

Wii U owners should be lucky it's still coming to the system at all, tbh.

Yes, we should be lucky that the game they said would come out on the Wii U for years comes out on the Wii U. -_-

And I'm aware of the point of the comment(s). But its still unnecessary snark. Like we get it, it sold poorly. But people saying that the Wii U shouldn't get it period are being... irksome, to put it mildly. Meanwhile, if something like that happened to the consoles y'all own, the majority of y'all would be justifiably upset.

A week is lame, but I'll live. We'll all live. But if Nintendo actually were to scrap it altogether, after all this time, that'd be an even bigger middle finger.

Well I'm probably buying the Wii U version, and I definitely feel screwed over. Not only will I have to wait an extra week, but I won't be able to talk about it online because everyone else will be 30 hours ahead of me. 3D Zelda is the one thing I look forward to every generation, and they won't even let me fully enjoy it.

I just fundamentally disagree with this sentiment. Is it a middle finger to me that I bought a PS3 for the Last Guardian and it is only now launching on the PS4? No, it's just due to the unpredictable nature of ambitious game design, and is something that happens occasionally. Sometimes the timeline for developing a game just doesn't match up with the timeline of the console on which it was originally developed. Does this mean that moving it to the newer platform in order to assure enough sales to offset the development costs is a middle finger to the fans? No, it's just the nature of an industry where platforms necessarily rotate every few years.

The fact that Nintendo is still striving to get this game out on the Wii U despite its scope being a little too big for that platform just shows that they care about the people that bought a Wii U and the promise that they made to them. There's no business incentive for not just scrapping the Wii U version when it was proving to be technologically unfeasible, but Nintendo is dedicated to its fanbase in a way that the fans tend not to appreciate.

I would be lying if I said this didn't irritate me.

I bought a Wii U for this game after that first reveal of gameplay footage in 2014. Nintendo has not handled this game's release correctly from my standpoint. I won't be buying a switch at launch or anytime soon thereafter.

So delaying the Wii U version a week proves how much Nintendo cares for it's fans?

The game should have been out on the WiIU by now, Nintendo are holding it back for Switch, doesn't look promising to me, don't they have anything else in the works?

The current rumor is that the game's localization and testing are taking far longer than they had planned, so the Wii U version couldn't possibly be ready to go.

Now, do I think the Wii U version would have been pushed back if the Switch wasn't coming? I don't know- based on Aonuma's comments after the first delay they seemingly wanted to add a whole lot of content that otherwise wouldn't have been there. As for the second delay (2016->2017) again we don't know how much content that has added to the Wii U version.

I'm not going to pretend getting a Switch version ready wasn't a factor in delaying the game, but I would be very surprised if they just let the Wii U version sit without adding in any new content, features or polish over the past year or two.

I'll probablyn hold off on picking up a Switch until this releases then. The new Mario sounds cool, assuming rumors hold true, but that might be the only launch game I'm interested in depending on how things shake out.

We should start collecting usernames of people claiming they aren't going to buy a Switch just for future reference.

Don't you think that it says something though when a lot of WiIU owners are saying the same thing though? I am going to wait and see as I have said a few times already, everybody else waited and waited which turned the devs/pubs off from supporting the WiIU, I am not doing anything different.

Of course not, and nobody here believes that. It is without a doubt a business decision made to promote the Switch version.

It was scheduled for release in 2015 and then there were other dates, the game at this years E3 must have been the finished WiiU game but it is not having tweaks etc for Switch, so it could be argued that the Switch is delaying the game by six months.

The point is you got to play those games years earlier than you would have otherwise?

Not sure it was with the extra £300 though.

Anyway, the game does look good and will no doubt be better on the Switch, I just wonder control-wise if the WiiU with the utilisation of the game-pad for maps, storage and menus will mean that it is in fact the superior game-play version of the game over the better graphics of the Switch.
