Rumour: Nintendo aiming for Zelda BotW release on June 16 (EUR), Switch release first

Definitely don't like this news, but if it's out of Nintendo's hands insofar as they don't feel the game is ready for launch, and not just them holding it back for strategic purposes I'm not going to be mad. Though they've definitely been throwing out those vibes that it would be a launch title, so you can't really blame people for being disappointed.

Zelda at launch would be really great. Definitely help push some Switch sales, but it would really help to boost Zelda sales, much like TP experienced on the Wii. Also definitely makes me reconsider my plans to get the Switch at launch. They'll have to have a really great lineup for me to try and get one then and not simply wait until Zelda releases. Either way ~3 months isn't exactly a huge wait. Still launch window.

Delaying the game one week for Wii U owners? I may actually start crying here. Is Nintendo kidding with this? It is one of the most insulting things they've ever done.

People may say it's just one week but those assholes clearly have no sense of time.

We live in extremely dark times. The world could end in that one week. And all I want is what Nintendo promised me: pure, unfiltered happiness... at the same time as a Switch owner.

7 days.

168 hours.

10,080 minutes.

Fuck.

Have you ever watched a clock? Minutes take forever when you're watching and I'll, no doubt, be watching the clock that entire time. It may as well be delayed another year or two.

June instead of March means that I take three weeks off for this instead of two. Work gives me 8 paid weeks off per year, and this is one of those special games that's worthy of a big vacation.

If it's June, though.. I don't know if that's enough time to play Skyrim. 3-4 months? That's dicey. I might end-up playing a few smaller games instead. Save Skyrim for the winter.

Are you trying to be the new 'Square Enix just shot themselves in the foot'?

Be glad they are even bothering to release it for WiiU at all and only one week delay. Let's say Zelda sells world wide numbers similar to Skyward Sword first month at 1 million, probably less than 10k of those units will be for WiiU, mostly collector's wanting to complete their Nintendo published WiiU library.

Something tells me the Wii U version is going to be a more limited produced run, and not printed or stocked nearly as long. I may just keep my Wii U version that I have pre-ordered cheap, buy the Switch version to play, and put the Wii U one on my shelf.

Twilight Princess for Gamecube is one of two Zelda games I'm missing the box for, and I get the feeling if I don't just pick the Wii U version up at launch it'll later be outrageously expensive.

If that happens it would mirror the release of OoT3D for 3DS in terms of timing. I had heard it'd be later, but the sooner the better.

Right after E3, huh? Hopefully I can still get it with the customary Canadian E3 preorder deal then. I've had Zelda U preordered at 30% off for like 3 years, but now I want to Switch version. :\

I bought a Wii U when Miyamoto and Aonuma went on TV and said star fox and Zelda would both be out by holiday 2015. Star Fox sucked and here I am still waiting. If this turns out to be true and Wii U buyers get the game later....... ooooooooooooh man I'm gonna be pissed.

I think this may work out really well for Nintendo actually. Even the Wii U had solid/good sales for the first month or two. The Switch will have a lower price and a better launch lineup. The core Nintendo fans will likely buy it at launch and Zelda will keep the momentum going. Assuming they also have a couple other games releasing they should be able to maintain momentum going into the holiday 2017.

Of course I'd rather have Zelda right now though :)

Notice how suddenly so many people seem to care about Wii U lately? They're really concerned about the Wii U owners well being. How sweet.

Ah, right. It's even on Nintendo.com. Well, approximately simultaneously then.

Concern trolling at its finest. (Not you KingSnake. The people you are referring to in your post)

Is this a serious post? If so, then...

I told myself (after the rumor that Zelda was being delayed) that I would get Switch at release if Zelda was a summer game. Looks like I'll be there day 1 then.

I hope all of the recent rumours are not true. My initial Switch hype coming from the reveal trailer died pretty quickly in the last weeks. Not going to repeat my WiiU mistake, not going to buy a portable remaster machine :(

Nintendo, pls get your shit together or go 3rd party

I take it you haven't bought a PS4, Xbox One or PC either then. Because boy do they have a lot of remasters & enhanced ports.

E3's gonna be pretty hype if this ends up being the case. So long as the new Mario and other games are there on release, it's only another three months.
As another Wii U owner, it's really not that bad. It had its run, I suppose.

It was promised and built for the Wii U first, might as well get it out as the last hurrah.

To prove to their fans that they don't actually abandon them. Anyone who thinks Nintendo's being 'anti-fan' obviously wasn't around for Sega rapidly bailing on their last 4 systems.

Yeah, but people that own Wii U are the hardcore Nintendo fans. They will be Switch's early adopters and I have a hard time imagining any of them choosing to buy Zelda for Wii U instead of buying it for their new shiny console.

If they cancel the Wii U version I'll be livid. They advertised this for years as a Wii U game, not to mention they demoed it last E3 on the Wii U.

Don't mess this up Nintendo.

Are there any jobs going?

I've waited a long time for Zelda. That's it's launching later for Wii U is nothing. I'm still going to get it.

I really don't see a problem here. At least it's coming, I know I'm not the only Wii U owner that's not buying a Switch at launch.

A brand new 3D Mario on March, the biggest Zelda game ever made on June... Geeeeez. I can't imagine what they will bring to holiday 2017 then! Metroid Prime 5 x F-Zero developed by Retro Studios in collaboration with From Software, perhaps!

No but seriously, 2017 is genuinely aiming to be the best year of Nintendo since 2006 when the Wii launched! So nice that everything we've heard about NS so far are good stuff. At least in terms of game releases.

Yea, I know we all want Zelda as soon as possible but I think this is the better strategy for Nintendo. The Switch will have good sales at launch due to 3D Mario. Zelda will hit in June and add to the momentum. Compare that to the Wii U and it launched fine with New Super Mario U, but quickly lost momentum because there weren't enough releases after launch. Zelda will ensure that doesn't happen on Switch and will help it gain momentum.

Edit: Of course they need to have some games ready for holiday 2017 but that shouldn't be an issue I hope.

The 2 big questions are:

- Will have a physical release for Wii U version or will be download only?

- Will be enough Switch for anyone that want to buy one or Nintendo once again will undership their console?

Considering the Switch is supposedly launching worldwide at the same time, then expect relative low amounts of units available. And if the console is an initial hit, then expect shortages.

I know it makes sense financially, but Nintendo's willingness to toss WiiU owners under a bus for the sake Switch sales is really not treating their customers well.

I mean sure, they're mostly hardcore Nintendo fans and will somehow see the WiiU version's delay as a positive, but still, shifty behaviour by Nintendo.

In fact I wouldn't be at all surprised if the WiiU version were actually already finished, and the delays are purely driven by the Switch port.

I understand the logic behind thinking Wii U owners shouldn't have to wait longer for a game after giving more support to Nintendo than many have, but I'm inclined to believe that having the Switch sell well will be more beneficial to the customers and Nintendo in the long run.

Let's say you're right about the Wii U version being complete now, though. How much earlier do you think it could be released than the Switch version and not harm the sales of the switch?

Don't really feel like these type of comments are necessary. Regardless of the console, it's pretty lame when shit like this happens.

But there's a point to the comment... The Wii U was a dud and this new Zelda looks like it's going to be a major system seller. They want the Switch to succeed. Any little nod or nudge they could give towards their new system will help them long term.

Wii U owners should be lucky it's still coming to the system at all, tbh.

That guy who said he would never ever buy another Nintendo console if Nintendo delayed Zelda Wii U just for the sake of Switch sales on suicide watch lmao

Could be another reason why Zelda releasing in June may be good. Gives them that much more time to get consoles out. Hopefully there will be plenty but I think Nintendo is conservative with their sales figures since the Wii U.

The 12 people still interested in the Wii U version will get over it eventually.

The 25 of them that won't buy Switch will be in tears.
The dozens are giving both of you the finger right now. >:(

That's a good call, actually. If Zelda released alongside Mario at launch, the shortages would be insane.

If I buy Switch, then I will get the Switch version. But if I'm staying with my Wii U, saving Switch for Holiday 2017, the Wii U version better be cheap. Otherwise I will really consider purchasing the game, and the New console.

I like Zelda games, but I'm not a hardcore Zelda fan. I want to play the game, but I also can live without it.
