No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

Can anyone actually comment on playing the patch, rather than just saying how cool the notes sound? Interested in what these "features" actually mean for gameplay

Glad to see a large update for people who bought the game.

The update page they created reminds me a lot of the TF2 update pages.
I would love to see more devs do update pages like this, it makes updates feel more special then just a list of patch notes.

It's only out for like an hour or 2 and it's not hit PC yet so you're going to have to wait longer for detailed impressions

All of this and more should've been in the game at release.

Not going to pile on to the malaise of negativity that already exists but HG & Sean Murray shot their bolt by releasing an incomplete product and right now it's all trying to heal some wounds so that people will buy any games they release in the future. To many gamers Sean Murray is always going to be Peter Molyneux 2.0 and I can't see them fixing that.
As someone that actually gave this game a fair shake and got to the centre of the galaxy, it's going tot take a lot more than some base building, I mean, what's the point when there's no incentive to stay in one place? Feels like they're removing something that falsely extended the life of the game in making farming easier but for most people the main point will still be upgrading your gun, suit and ship. A cycle that was really not worth all the time I put into it and never paid off.

Good for them, update looks interesting and a positive step in the right direction. It's probably not going to stop all of the hate, but they have done everything they can in three months to address some of the problems with the game.

People referred to Sean as Molyneux 2.0 and the game as Spore 2.0 before the game even launched. Sean (and the team) have pretty much been in a lose lose situation since the start.

This patch seems to add quite a lot and maybe make the game more intresting, if thats the case I wouldn't be against rebuying the game after I refunded on release day

This is a god update, i want more but this is a good start. Docking into space freighters, nice very nice.

These guys are such damn troopers, they deserve respect for knuckling down and improving their game under a hailstorm of daily Internet hate. NMS is still one of my most chilled experiences of the year, I'll def. be jumping back in to check out the new stuff when FFXV is done.

Love and Respect to Sean and the HG team.

They sold their game on a bunch of lies. They deserve zero respect.

This is only true if you assume it would be impossible to release a satisfactory game.

I'm assuming you can build multiple bases at different planets, and with a freighter you'll be able to fast travel between systems. I'm not big on ground bases, but keep in mind if you buy a freighter, it's basically your own base you can customize in the same way.

As for whether you find the game loop exciting, well, this is just the start of content updates.

I don't know what I expected from the update, but... damn! That's quite impressive to be honest. Yest, base building is not for me that much, but the freighters, different elements, smaller tweaks in GUI (glad they divided the red marker to point to specific element!), does it mean the gatherers will gather resources all the time (without actually depleting the rock? That'b be awesome!)

Overall, I think I'm gonna jump into the game today.

Holy crap, those patch notes. They've started learning to under-promise and over-deliver, rather than the other way around. A step in the right direction to be sure.

One area where they have been scant about is Survival mode. Unless I glossed over a section, it doesn't look like they talked about it much. I hope it's more than just normal mode with faster-depleting bars.

Looks pretty nice with some big improvements. More than I expected.

I would jump right in if I hadn't so much else to play right now.
Will probably wait for that til a second update but good to see Hello Games putting some real effort into this to deliver on their original promises and try to make things right with all their mostly disappointed Day1 costumers.

About Normal, Survival and Creative modes, you now basically have 3 different save slots or do you have to pick one up when you first start up the game after the update?

I'm very happy that HG didn't just take the money and run. I was one of the pissed off fans and quit after I got to the third planet. I really, really, want to like this game. I'm glad that I re-downloaded the game again in anticipation of this patch. I look forward to playing this update and if they add decent space combat, I think I can forgive them and will purchase their next game.

To many gamers Sean Murray is always going to be Peter Molyneux 2.0 and I can't see them fixing that.

And I hope that Hello Games and Sean Murray pays no attention to them during their continued development efforts. People who refuses to budge from such opinions no matter what happens, deserves no attention.

Shame there's no trophies, the road to the platinum was much more satisfying than the journey to the centre of the universe, still fantastic work regardless.

Welp, redownloading the game as I type. I must apologize to Hello Games for thinking they were going leave their game out to die.

Survival mode is the big thing for me, and freighters come a close second.

In hindsight another delay would have been welcomed.

This is it, though, hindsight's an amazing thing. Sometimes the only way to figure out what people really want is to send the game out and listen to feedback.

I'm still drawing Minecraft comparisons with this; provided the updates keep flowing and they keep listening to the community I'll keep the pitchfork away.

I endured Driveclub from release to completion of the season pass so I know how amazingly things can be turned around.

I would rather they decrease the amount of tropical planets and increase the amount of lifeless planets. That way, you get more varied calculations reserved for the lower count planets than a diverse amount. Plus, it would make finding a "living" planet a discovery which was one of his original promises.

Looks like I will be waiting next year to see if the improvements live up to the hype I have reserved for this game.

Not really interested in base building, still sour about the fake planetary rotation.

Huh, I've never seen that interview, what is that image from? Anyway yeah I'm sour about that too, and the fact that planets don't rotate around their star and are all clumped together. But maybe now that you can teleport from a base to a space station (I think?), that gives less need to have everything so close together and perhaps they'll change it. Perhaps.

This sounds like a great update to me, larger than I expected. Lack of good AA and motion blur are huge pet peeves of mine so I'm glad those got added in, should be a much smoother experience. Some of my highlights from the patch notes:

Removed atlas pass v1 requirement from doors in stations.
Increased the number of different NPC character models generated per system.
Added new icons for specific types of primary resources.
Massive speed improvements to browsing huge discovery lists.
Added photo mode.
Added biome specific plants.
Introduced new mineable terrain resources found only in red, green and blue star systems.
Introduced planets with no buildings or sentient life.
Smaller features now appear at nearer lods to improve visuals in the distance.
Decreased differences between planet as seen from space and actual planet terrain.
Planets are now scannable from space to see their resources.
Holding brake whilst turning now activates drift for fast turns.
Freighter Commanders now give rewards for rescuing them from pirate attack.

Can't wait to hop back in.

Hope they can get planetary rotation in one of the updates, though at this point I have to assume their engine was never capable of it.

The update appears to be good and the game is on sale BUT I think in light of the history of this game I'll probably wait for the winter sale to see the feedback and if there are anymore patches.

Survival modes are great but they need to be properly tuned so that they are difficult but fair. If I pick up the game later that would be the mode I would play so I want to know for sure if that mode is good. For now though I'm gonna wait.

visual upgrade is great. anti aliasing looks much improved (but also makes the game a bit softer), motion blur is a good addition, pop-in has been reduced greatly (at least on the 3 planets i was on). i also think there are much more animals running around and animations are improved.

Really glad they didn't just give up on the game and are making these big updates. I really liked the game before even with its many faults, but seeing the video Im more excited about jumping back in and playing a bit more. Looking forward to seeing what else they bring us in the future too.

Fromwhat I saw on one stream, that's the case here. When you choose Survival, ou actually start from scratch.

So, going with Normal is the only way not to start from scratch?

Wait, so base building is a different mode? You can¡t share discoveries etc... with your regular save?
That's lame.

Nope, you can build on Normal and Survival too. In creative mode you have the privilege of being immortal, with unlimited resources and you can build anything for free.

"Suit upgrade pods are no longer spawned in stations"

Oh oh...

Props to them for actually putting out a meaningful update, I never thought it would happen. It wouldn't surprise me if this is their 'get out clause' though.

"We tried to remedy the situation by releasing some good content. Sadly the playerbase refused to come along so we had no choice but to abandon the game we wanted to keep creating for. I feel like I redeemed myself, please buy Joe Danger 3!".
