No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

For me the game died the moment it was clear that there was no MP though, so this update doesn't do anything for me.

Though this doesn't seem to include full MP yet, I noticed on the changelog one thing that Sean mentioned in interviews as a MP component:
Communications Terminals allow explorers to leave sub-space messages for others to find

With bases and some sort of comms network, I'd say MP is coming. Not Destiny style stuff, but probably more explorer focused.

Am I the only one that thinks that setting up a base on your own planet is at odds with the original premise of exploration?

Yes it does but it also allows you to have an easily accessible "home" planet. Which isn't a bad thing in my book.

While I'm still not interested, this looks to be a good starting point (base building still an odd choice, but it looks to relieve some of the issues with resource management) and hopefully assuage the current bleakness around No Man's Sky.

Update and video look promising. Looking forward to impressions. Kinda wish I didn't just get rid of my physical copy literally yesterday.

Looks good, but the damage is done.

I think there's a lot of merit in regaining trust though. If they can build NMS up to be considered a good game in the future, that'll build a lot of trust for whatever they choose to work on next. If we look back on NMS as a disaster that remained a disaster, then their next game is in a lot of trouble already. But if we look back and think, sure, it had a terrible launch but they worked hard to eventually make it into the game they promised, then they're back in a good position.

Still isn't enough to bring me back to the game. Building a base and farming all seems entirely pointless when the whole point of the game is to keep progressing to the centre of the galaxy.

Personally, this game should've been MP focused from it's inception. The fact that it's not still baffles me.

Because it's a technical nightmare even more so for such a tiny team. Of all the thing they they promised multiplayer is the most likely to never be added back in

Probably Sony got sick of them delaying the game and forced them to release it when they did

The game is self funded, Sony only help with there marketing power. Running out of money maybe one of the reason they release the game as is.

well, here we go. ill download once again and see what this is all about. theyre sitll not off the hook, but this will help.

Impressive. I like the idea of a survival aspect, though I couldn't give a damn about the base building, that area has been saturated for a while and ruined FO4.

Is there any detailed description of the differences between game modes?

I'm kind of hoping creative mode is a way to effectively turn the survival stuff at least mostly off, and let me just get on with exploring and dicking around space.

I loved the game for about a week until the constant pestering for resources, lack of inventory space and inability to return to anything I found just pissed me off. If creative mode lets solves those problems, I'm back in.

Great update for sure.
Played the game at launch on my brother's PS4 and it ended up being boring super fast, but if they have multiple expansions like this one I can see myself buying the Xbox version whenever it comes out.

OK, the base building is pretty fun. Can do quite a lot with it.

Also being able to build Communication Boosters anywhere makes life much easier rather than hunting around for them.

Kudos to them for putting in the work when it would have been easier to just duck away.

I get the impression it probably won't be enough to ever fully redeem it in the eyes of the masses, though it may be enough to build up a small dedicated user group.

Genuinely impressive update.

The game was disappointing, but I never shared the outright hate many do. I enjoyed what time I did put into the game, just found it shallow. I would love to be able to dive back in after three or four updates like this.

Since everything the poster you quoted said is true it's not really irrational though, is it?
Yeah but that doesn't change the fact that people did get really irrational and crazy over this game. Sean is clearly not talking about the people who made posts like gaffers but the people on twitter harassing him and his staff. Don't play the card of ignorance as it was very well documented at the time although if anyone does want to defend internet harsssment because you're disappointed in a product I don't know what to tell you.

Way more then I expected for a first update .

I love you have freighters now (but can we pilot them ?) . Does 3 docking stations mean we can have multiple ships ?

Also liked the base building , it already has more unique building designs I saw in the entire game . Plus tweaking the algorithms etc is awesome.

I hope they focus on the animals on the next update . Build a zoo , be a photographer ,, be a bounty hunter etc.

Personally I have always thought they nailed the look / design and have it had some fantastic visuals . I just want more content todo on each planet

Looking at these features more closely Sony legit locked them in an office with no internet connection and only a copy of Subnautica for 3 months

You can fast travel back to it from any system. It is a moot point. And the game is now about much more than moving forward, which really lead to literally nothing.

I haven't seen a detailed description of the modes, but these should help with inventory space:
Expand your base with storage containers to stockpile precious resources and rare products

Resources can be teleported to your Freighter while on-planet, ideal for stockpiling goods for trading

Nobody is going to defend harrasment but we're also not going to defend a developer lying about what was/wasn't in their $60 product and then giving no explanation of what happened or what the plan was to fix the issues. This update was a step in the right direction for Hello Games towards fixing NMS, but they have a long way to go still. Hopefully they'll be more open about their updates and plans going forward going 3-4 months without any indication of when the next update will be or what it'll feature isn't going to help the image of NMS and HG.

Good job Hello Games, keep it up. Really glad to see that they have been able to stay strong through all of this.

Actions speak louder than words.

But that's my point, originally the game was all about the proc gen and a quintillion planets, this just seems to be a juxtaposition to that.
Still just about to start a new 'survival' game so I'll see for myself!

I doubt it, they would have pointed out if they added players being able to see changes to planets.

You can leave messages for other people now so there is definitely some kind of persistence in place. I think we will be able to see other people's bases.

Sadly they appear to be victims of their own hype. While I don't appreciate radio silence by ANY company, nor do I condone persecuting members of the development team - no matter how badly you feel ripped off by the game not meeting your expectations.

I didn't buy No Man's Sky because I'm not a fan of procedurally generated games, nor the survival genre in general. From my objective viewpoint, it looks as though they marketed an Early Access title as a full release. At least now they are adding more value to the package, and I hope their future works out brightly.

Bravo, Hello Games, bravo. Was not expecting this update to be anywhere near this expansive. Base building looks cool but the freighter stuff is EXACTLY what I wanted.

For the first time in months I can say I'm genuinely excited by the game and what HG has in store for it in the future.

Going to download the patch and play right now!

Look at all that work they put into everything but fixing the core game, the end game, and its issues.

I played a ton of No Man's Sky - bought it digitally at full price, and I had fun with it for a bit.

But man, even if you're really into base building and owning your own freighter and stuff... the core game is still by-and-large pointless.

The combat isn't fun. Mining isn't fun. Discovering new planets is awesome, until you discover that there's nothing new to do on any of them.

I'm worried that future updates are just going to be like this Foundation update in that it'll add new things to tinker with (customize your ship, customize your spacesuit in our new third person mode, hire followers to mine for you in other galaxies, join a trading faction and win or lose credits on the space stock market, etc)... without making the actual gameplay any good.

Give me challenges and stuff to do on the planets. Give me stuff to do. Not build or tinker or customize. Make the game part of the game better.

Music's still awesome though!

The most exciting change to me is the new hardcore survival mode. I always thought that making it a dangerous roguelike would help the game a lot making your decisions have fatal consequences. I'm a lot more interested in that then base building.

Great job on the patch Hello Games. They did the right thing, stfu, hunker down and release a ton of changes with the promise of more.

Good on HG for pushing through the shitstorm. I'll probably dive back in after the next couple of updates, because even right now the game seems a bit thin on gameplay.

As one of those who thought they would just take the money and run I must say this crow I am eating is great, it tastes delicious.

Will install once the PC patch hits.
