No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

That's why I am bemused by the promise of multiplayer being broken. Through every interview Shaun himself said it was practically impossible to find another player anyway , yet because 2 random people found it early ( my guess is the spawn generation fuckt up to even allow that to happen), it's suddenly a massive broken feature .

Let's assume it was in , chances are if the spawn generation had worked correctly no one would have ever found anyone anyway . So the bitchingn is kind of pointless.

Definitely grill them on all the other missing features (factions , space battles etc), but multiplayer seems like the least important broken promise.

I never expected multiplayer and I never expected to see another player online .

Anyway hope we can get some more patch impressions in here , I will definitely rebuy when it's cheap and jump back in , hopefully by then they have even more patches planned .
I'm not talking about the multiplayer itself (it should be possible to run into other players, no matter how infrequently), I'm talking more about the people wanting to match up with friends. They even said that the only way you could do that was to actually find their position in the galaxy and travel to them. So unlike the "multiplayer" aspect, there was never a promise that you would be able to find and play with friends
easily
.

could you always land on freighter ships (after you saved them from an attack) and claim a reward from the captain?

edit: damn, i just bought a freighter ship that looks like a fucking star destroyer.

ok im jumping in soon

I'd like to see reviews from people who have yet to play the game at all with this new update.

I was feeling hesitant on buying it at first, so I'm glad I waited. At the same time, seeing them put in the work necessary, I have a feeling I would enjoy this more with the update, or perhaps after the next big one.

I don't see why any of the original complaints about the game wouldn't still be there, this doesn't seem to address any of them except item stacking.

What are the exact differences between normal, survival, and creative modes? How are they similar?

Can you switch between modes at will?
Can you have multiple bases?

Is there a post for photo mode?

Has anyone figured out how to build a base yet? Also, where do you purchase freighters from?

scan or fly around a planet until you find a marker that says "empty base". to get a freighter, you have to save one from a pirate attack (at least, thats how it worked for me). after that, you can land on the ship and talk to the captain. you get a reward and the option to buy the ship.

Great update, but it really doesn't fix the core problem of the game.

Essentially, this update gives players the ability to grind and make some cool bases and spaceships, but ultimately the game will still feel hollow and pointless because:

1. There is nothing actually happening in the universe. There's no conflict (enemies, civilizations/agents in your way), no purpose, nothing. After you've built your stuff... you've just kinda built some stuff that you can look at.

2. There's no multiplayer. It would've been neat if we could at least congregate at someone's base or freighter.

So yeah, I'll probably play again for a bit only to wonder why I'm doing any of this at all and stop playing.

Yea, I don't really get it myself how this suddenly fixes everything.

Yes, too much time has passed to address the issue and keep playing the victim card.

So when they come back and play the victim card, I'm not allowed to call them out on it?

Did you actually read the rest of my post or just zero on on that and skip the rest?

Reading comprehension is a thing. You should try it sometime, RPGam3r. Like, the immediate sentence following that one. Perspective, holy shit!

I read the rest of your post. I disagree with you and you feel the need to attack my reading ability, wtf. How HG has treated their messaging is the least of your concern as a developer with that attitude.

As burnt as I felt with NMS V1, this update gives me hope. You have my attention again Hello Games.

What I would really love is a little more "Space Engine" in that universe. They have to open it up.
- I want to crash into the sun
- I want to blow my ship to pieces against a mountain
- I want to seamlessly fly from system to system. Right now each system feels like a box with a few planets that you randomize with the galactic map, it makes it feel so small.

Kill the skybox.. If I see a dot in the night sky, let me fly to it.

Great job HG

So this is basically where the game should've been at when it launched? I'll be watching from a distance and see how thing will be going.

This looks great, I can't wait to jump back in to this game. I always felt the core game play was fun, but needed more to do. Looks like they're headed in the right direction, and I'm pleased to see they've kept working hard despite all the negativity.

So this is basically where the game should've been at when it launched? I'll be watching from a distance and see how thing will be going.

I think it's probably still missing some assets, multiplayer, an ACTUAL meaningful galactic center, etc.

They still have a long way to go- but they're progressing, much to peoples' surprise.

nobody said it does. and if you want multiplayer or a story...its simply not the right game for you. no patch will fix that.

Bad argument. A lot of critics such as myself aren't asking for multiplayer OR a story. We just want something to actually DO (Some kind of goal that is satisfying) in the game because the planets themselves are the same 5 templates displayed again and again with different terrain, making exploration boring.

It's not a single sentence. It's not just that one tweet. They have constantly reveled in their own greatness of their small team and mention it constantly.

How about mentioning the consumer? How about considering the consumer instead of themselves, for once?

I get your point and I agree, but on the other hand - what would've changed? After all the shit Sean Murray said, who would've believed anything? I sure as hell didn't. It was a scam. Pumping out a patch for the game is - in my opinion at least - right now the best they can do to actually consider the consumer. I assume we might see more comments about what went down and wrong in the next weeks, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I think the content patch we got was the actual release plan for the game, they probably just ran out of money and couldn't delay it any further. Keeping quiet is probably just something they have to do in order to avoid any possible legal consequences. Or at least that's the way I see it.

On a sidenote, just looking at my copy of the Limited Edition of NMS feels like it is spitting directly into my face, laughing at me how dumb I was for preordering it...

Well, whatever. Time to check out the update and probably sink another 50 hours into the game LOL

Minecraft and a billion+ reasons says hi.

This ain't Minecraft, but don't knock resource management and building games. They're their own genre and there's plenty to do if designed well.

I just want the content previously talked about/promised that will be in the game.

:( cool we have a update but the game still sucks.

Would have loved to see a better ending put in, different robots like the walkers we've seen in the past, cut the amount of world's into a fourth in order to have more diverse worlds, and less reliance on farming or at least give us faster/more fun methods to farm since the game is practically "destroy that rock" simulator.

Slick update. Have only read the notes, but it seems to be more feature, bug fix and optimization related than overhauls of existing systems. But I'm curious enough to reinstall it and jump back in for a short spell just to look around.

Good on Hello for keeping to their word about free updates. Helps to rebuild some good will.

Yea, I don't really get it myself how this suddenly fixes everything.
One thing I thought would have been pretty mind blowing that was mentioned I think by a GT podcast(?) was how fucking insane would it be if MP was a thing that worked but due to the universe's sheer size, you rarely saw anyone - their example was like you've been playing for a month or two and out of nowhere come across another player. That would absolutely freak me out. Like... What would you do? Try to communicate? Attack? Jump up and down? Trade supplies?

That would be absolutely fucking cool to see happen and really throw you off-guard.

I read the rest of your post. I disagree with you and you feel the need to attack my reading ability, wtf. How HG has treated their messaging is the least of your concern as a developer with that attitude.
Probably has to do with me being a consumer and having respect for them, too.

Crazy, right?

I hope Hello Games continues to improve No Man's Sky and make it into the game they wanted it to be.

Me too. I wasn't one of those who was completely disappointed in what I got. It didn't hold my attention for very long, but I did play it for many hours. The lack of challenge definitely made it more forgettable IMO. I rarely ever died in tens of hours played. That's not much of a game. I die more in Minecraft.

Looking forward to trying survival mode.

Yeah while this definitely seems like a 'cool' update it doesn't seem to address the fundamental misinformation spread throughout the game's PR cycle. It almost feels like an acknowledgement that those promises made will never be fulfilled, and that this new direction is where HG is going to put their time and resources. Cool, but a bummer.

Really glad to see.

Have enjoyed the game from the start, warts and all, and always believed they'd continue to do right by the game. Wish they had communicated more about it, like, well, everyone but the end result looks really promising and I wish them continued luck in delivering on the original vision plus more.

Minecraft and a billion+ reasons says hi.

This ain't Minecraft, but don't knock resource management and building games. They're their own genre and there's plenty to do if designed well.

This is hardly the freeform building game that Minecraft is, lol, they're not comparable at all.

Regardless, the game's initial promise from the trailers is that No Man's Sky does have a purpose. The center of the galaxy is what everyone was supposed to strive for, trying their best to get there while fighting or helping enemy factions and such.

After the game released and all of that turned out to be a sham, the diehard fans such as yourself change topic and argue "Well, this isn't supposed to be that type of game, it's for exploration!!!" -> Conveniently missing the fact that the exploration in NMS is objectively terrible.

And now apparently after this update the game is going to be a base building game of Minecraft caliber. lul

I will say that sometime in the future I'm still willing to give this game another chance, though. Maybe next august we'll get the $60 it promised it was going to be.

Perhaps the game isn't for you. There are likely people for whom this update addresses more than a few concerns.

There is literally a mode where you can build whatever the hell you want. They are limited in the tile set (which can be added to), but please stop moving the goal posts as it were in terms of what this update adds.

First of all, do you even know what goalposts are? What goalposts am I moving, exactly?

And that's my point, I'm not contesting the fact that you can build bases, I'm simply saying it is not comparable to Minecraft at all in terms of the level of complexity of the things you can build as well as the materials you can use.

I agree with detractors that without the hype train this game would have been a 10-20 USD early access game and they need to be taken to task for that (maybe with less Twitter death threats please, fucking morons) but I still hope this game becomes what it was meant to be eventually. If that takes a year or 5, so be it, but it should never have been sold as a complete game and HG doesn't deserve sympathy, or a pat on the back for continuing to develop it.

So I've downloaded the patch on Steam, loaded it up, and as soon as the shaders finish loading the game crashes. This game has never crashed on me before.

Probably has to do with me being a consumer and having respect for them, too.

Crazy, right?

You can't just play your dev card when it is convenient to the point your making. Also neither your dev or consumer side makes your attitude any less off putting. You do not need to attack peoples reading ability to stand by something you believe in.
