Overwatch wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2016

My year has mostly consisted of playing multiplayer games every goddamn night and rarely finding time to put into single player experiences. I only just started playing Overwatch a couple weeks ago, but it's definitely deserving and it winning Game of the Year is indicative of the multitude of incredible multiplayer games with such long lives that have taken up so much of my time in the past year.

That's a... very specific choice but reflects this industry quite good, doesn't it?

I love this "game", still playing it, but it's more of like a service than a traditional tittle. This trend is growing bigger every year and with OW winning GOTY I can see it getting even stronger over time. Say goodbye to your offline play in near future, focusing on online is the way to go. It's not a bad thing, just different than couple of years ago.

The Witcher 3, a single player game without any multiplayer aspect at all, swoop most GOTY awards last year, breaking the record of all time. Even the 'DLC' still won an award tonight, better than every RPGs released this year. Don't worry, if the single player game is good, they'll be recognized accordingly.

A Team Fortress 2 reskin would GOTY?

Congrats to Valve, they're still managing to innovate the industry even if they don't release any games.

What makes overwatch more compelling besides its characters ?

The tight focus on two smaller teams battling over objectives rather than kills, the wide range of skill sets and options a team can be made up of, and the lack of a kill board to emphasize the team aspect of the game over individual solo strategies.

These things make it very compelling to play, and the smaller player counts in each match make the experiences more intimate.

What makes Overwatch more compelling besides the fact that it has 22 distinct playstyles all relatively balanced well in one mp shooter?

Let's not be silly now, a good 1/3 of the characters are not balanced well at all. Lol.

If Overwatch has to credit Team Fortress 2 with its' success, Valve needs to credit id for the success of Team Fortress 2.

After all, TF2 is just a 'reskin' of TF1.
Which is just a 'reskin' of Quake.

I said besides its characters... The moment to moment gameplay and shooting mechanics are meh, imo.

The characters are part of the gameplay. The shooting mechanics aren't amazing but they also aren't bad either, plus the abilities are a lot of fun and every character has at least 3. Judging shooters just by gun feedback is a fool's errand. There's a lot more than that to a game.

Those are great points. My fav part of OW is the scoring system. However, most of your points apply to titanfall 2, as well and it is even balanced better

My biggest issue is that nothing exciting ever happens. I bet you have more saved clips from titanfall 2. I like OW for what it is, i just dont think it was the best overall/ complete fps this year.

Also my most played game this year and got me back playing on PC more. Well deserved. I also love all that salt from people calling it shit. Yeah, tell that to us more than about 10 Million playres (I dont count the 20 million accounts, cause there are so many cafe accounts I think). We have all the same bad taste. :|

What? Overwatch is known for that exciting part oO

I also enjoy Titanfall 2 a lot. But I had a lot of difficulty getting matched into the game modes I actually want to play, partly because BF1 really ate the userbase on Origin, and partly because most players in TF2 enjoy playing the larger freeform modes like Attrition. So it's a different experience. It's hard to blame TF2's design for the market conditions making it hard for me to enjoy the game as much as I would otherwise want to, but that also contributes to why I have a more favorable view of OW as a team game. TF2's story campaign is phenomenal though.

Nah actually I save every one of my POTGs lol

Knocking it for not being the best overall is fair I suppose since Titanfall 2 does have more content

Congratulations Overwatch and the development team for such great work.

Uncharted wasn't robbed, it has been overrated for many many years.

Deserved. Congratulations to Blizz. I put in so many hours into OW. The last time I did this when I was 15 years younger.

Can't really disagree with Overwatch, it was some of the most pure fun I've had in a long time in a game. I've played DOOM as well and thought it was great but for my own personal preference, I would definitely choose OW over DOOM.

Fair enough. Yeah, it's a shame the userbase isn't as massive as it could have been

I kinda view OW as something similar to rocket league, if that makes any sense? The variety of modes moment to moment epic feats, smooth movement and mechanics of TF2 combined with a great sp mode put tf2 over the top for me. This year i would have given OW best multiplayer and TF2 Goty and Doom best shooter if i was an Awards Ceremony. All should have been recognized and respawn pulled off an amazing feat

Is POTG still whack with poo-brain or is it more accurate now?

Not quite following this. Games as a service is not new, and there's no shortage of single player games despite that?

Glad to see the game with the best gameplay winning this year.

I think it is absolutely fair to say if we look at it as a pure shooter in terms of expectations, Titanfall 2 offers a better and more robust experience if that's what you're in it for. The gunplay in OW isn't great, even with the hitscan characters. Much of what makes OW interesting as a game has less to do with the shooting mechanics and more to do with the teamplay mechancis and skill synergy between different characters. I love playing support characters in OW and characters who do things other than shooting. The variety is great. If I just wanted to specifically shoot people, I would play TF2 or Counterstrike.

But I think this also shows that OW's appeal is that it expands beyond just catering to established shooter fans, and creates new gameplay opportunities for people who want to play a shooting game with friends, but aren't really in it just for the shooting.

POTG is fucking broken btw. They made it worse in one patch where it kept favoring Mercy res moments over anything else, and then they fixed that but it's still wonky as fuck lol.

While Dark Souls 3 was a really awesome game, Overwatch was a game changer.
Highly deserved.
Uncharted was very pretty but other than that rather average.

Well, it was my GOTY, which surprised me, since I've been mostly playing smaller indie games, but when OW landed I thought I'd try it out. 120 hours later, I still play almost every day, sometimes for just a match or two. I dropped nearly forty hours into a single character, but now play a much wider variety of characters. I've been spending a lot of time in the Arcade brawl section where you get one of the various random brawls, which has made me get better with characters I normally don't play, like McCree and...sigh...Hanzo. So I'm still finding it more fun on the daily than most everything out there. It hooked me in the same way Rocket League did, but the new characters, new maps, new modes, and holdiay events keep me comg back better than RL managed.

Which reminds me that I need to play some more Rocket League. Congratulations to Blizzard and all the people who worked on the game. Keep it up!

Yeah, def see where you are coming from with regards to wider appeal and accessiblity. I loved playing support before i stopped playing OW. I wonder how TF2 would be with healing or support titans? lol

Best fucking game by miles. I've put over 130 hours into it, and I'm still not tired of it. In fact, this is the game that actually has me watching esports and twitch streamers regularly (Daddy MOONMOON). Game is brilliant, fun, and the characters bring the game such quality and life to each match.

I love this game, and I think the reason above all else is I will still be playing this game 1 year from now, 2, hell even 3.

A salty Nathan Drake bonus. This video brought me a chuckle
