It appears Super Mario Run will require an internet connection at all times

What? Kind of a deal breaker for me tbh. I get that its for the social features and kingdom builders but I hope they have some sort of offline mode

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
It's a mobile game, so I kinda expected this.

I was totally ready to drop the £8 on this, but now I don't think I will.

Most mobile games are like this

Alas... kind of kills it for me since play mobile games on the train

Not so. I pay loads of games on my iPad and don't have any that require an internet connection.

"We wanted to be able to leverage that network connection with all three of the [Super Mario Run] modes to keep all of the modes functioning together and offering the game in a way that keeps the software secure."

the fuck does that even mean?

Why did they need this? How much data will it be sending? My plan is a very quaint one. I already cut my Spotify time to zero when not in wifi or I run out of data days before the end of the month!

Can someone explain the mobile so it makes sense angle?

Being serious I really don't get it? Microtransactions or something?

Who uses airplane mode besides on airplanes? This isn't a big deal at all.
Seconded. Mountains out of molehills

Presumably the kingdom mode is running persistently on their server and your "ghost" is being recorded in on World Tour mode for use in the Toad Rally mode and collected coins adding to your kingdom mode's count. Hence, all 3 modes working together

Anti-piracy because it's a simultaneous global release in different countries with different connections.

I can't recall a single paid mobile game I have that requires online to be able to play.

A lot of the ones this year actually. I have some older licensed games like Tetris on my phone that NEED a connection (as I found out when 5 of my apps didnt work because I had turned off data usage for those apps)

most mobile games are f2p also.

Not saying I like f2p, but when I pay premium price for a mobile game, I expect it free from online DRM.

One of my favorite mobile game, Jetpack Joyride, was free and didn't require online connection.

Anti-piracy because it's a simultaneous global release in different countries with different connections.

But isn't it being released only on IOS first? I thought it is really hard to pirate unless you jailbreak?

For myself, I was planning on playing this on my wifi only iPad, and I often use my iPad in areas with no wifi, like whenever I'm on a long journey.

There are no microtransactions or in app purchases of any kind.

Its funny that a game designed to be portable wont be very portable unless you're somewhere with a wifi hotspot. Its fine for me cause i live on a university but for people out in the suburbs or something thats gotta suck

Why are you so casually dismissing people who need to get on airplanes a lot? I often have long flights, and handheld gaming is a lifesaver then. Requiring an internet connection severely decreases its mobility for me.

Guess I'll have to play Switch on the plane instead lol.

After watching the trailer yesterday with all the social features in it, this was totally expected. It seems that we are storing our progress every now and then, like after completing a stage etc. Being always online is also a good way to prevent easy cheating as your data will always be stored on their server. It's not your usual Mario game.

"Mobile game, so I understand"

......Uhhh, what? I literally don't understand what this means. Especially since you buy the game outright.

But there's no ads or microtransactions. Why does the game need to be online all the time?

For exactly that reason. Pay once is very vulnerable to piracy. There's probably also concerns about cheating.

This sucks. I really dislike software that doesn't provide good offline modes (which is like all of it these days).

Also worth mentioning that Miitomo requiring an internet connection means it is pretty laggy to do anything. To boot up, to move between menus etc, you spend a lot of time looking at a loading screen.

Hackers should be able to find a way to circumvent this, so all Nintendo is doing is punishing paying customers. Awful policy.

much less interested in buying it now..

One of the few times I would want to play a mobile game would be if I were on an airplane with the radios turned off.
