Jay is indisputable top 10. Kanye & Wayne are in my top 10 too but i wouldnt complain about anyone putting them somewhere from 1-20.

1. 2Pac
2. Notorious B.I.G.
3. Jay-Z
4. Andre 3000
5. Kanye West
6. Dr. Dre
7. Lil Wayne
8. Nas

id say these 8 are a step above everyone else

Dr.Dre!? Whaaaat. I mean, Diamond D would eat him alive if we're talking producers who occasionally spit. And he would't make the list either.

Is Kanye rapping like Ghostface?

And no, there's no justification for putting Big L above Jay.

I don't agree that Big L is ahead of Jay but I get those who do. D.I.T.C. The Big Picture...that freestyle that has both of them on there and L kills it and Jay is like ok. Yeah there is an argument to be made.

Of course. Jay has longevity of course, Big L was lost to us before he hit his prime. But for me, Big L had the better presence and energy and just the right combo of street/humor/skills and viciousness. But I was never a fan of Jay generally, so I'm biased in that regard. Hell, speaking of D.I.T.C., OC is one of the best rappers for my money as well, definitely one of the most underrated.

Dr. Dre hasnt written a verse in his life but i was under the impression we were talking about hip-hop artists which encompasses more than straight up bars.

if were talking straight up rapping ability, dont think Pac or Kanye belong anywhere in the discussion, but if we're talking hip-hop artists as a whole, you gotta include influence, song writing ability, producing ability, album quality, consistency, etc

rapping ability is a way less interesting discussion imo, and we'd be talking about Eminem, Tech N9ne, and a lot of way less interesting artists

Ah, gotcha, I was taking just rappers but Diamond D is a dope producer so at least he sort of fits as an artist in a sense.

Out of your god damned mind.

Andre
KRS One
Rakim
Method
Chuck D
Kane.
Pac
Z

i respect the OGs like Chuck D, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane, etc, but i feel like their inclusion so high on the list is playing it way too conservative.

you gotta appreciate what they contributed to the form, but i cant imagine anyone will be playing a KRS One album in 50 years, but i can damn sure see MBDTF being played

yeah i mean im not gonna include DJ Premier or Just Blaze on my list for this discussion, but i think production skills can be mentioned when talking about what makes a rap artist great. im not sure Dre has been super involved in the actual playing of the keys and programming of the drums since his NWA days, but hes a hip hop artist in that hes the main face and voice of his music, and all the skills that go into creating his final musical product and artist persona is what makes him great.

Kanye and Drake are another couple of examples of great hip-hop artists that might not write every rhyme, but the way that leverage there own skills, taste, and persona to create a work in the genre of hip-hop is why id consider them for this type of discussion

You can't be fucking serious. With your criteria it would probably be Jay-Z, Eminem, and Andre 3000 And those guys are actually great rappers.

Objectively?

It's not even close. Your choice from an objective standpoint is Eminem or JayZ. Lyrics, sales, respect, and overall attention from media. There aren't many that come close. Kanye?

Kanye lol

Subjectively? I don't even think the guy makes my top 20.

1. LL Cool J
2. BIG
3. Krayzie Bone from Bone thugs n Harmony(most underrated artists ever in terms of solo efforts)
4. Eminem
5. Rakim
6. Nas
7. Jay Z
8. Big L
9. 2pac
10. Redman

I'm always amazed that rap fans never list Eminem, but the people they list as being "great" always give ridiculous props for Eminem and say they don't want to fuck with him. I wonder why Eminem doesn't receive more credit among listeners compared to actual artists?

well he did create one of the best music albums of all time.

huh? I see Eminem on many peoples top 5,etc

Who would Neogaf actually come close to a consensus on? I've seen how Eminem threads go when Gaf-Hop starts posting in them so it wouldn't be him. People don't like Jay Z because of the second half of his career, and Nas discussion is half "Nas Lost".

So who is the answer?

Good Question.

Lil B?

he might not be the greatest "rapper" but he's the greatest rap artist.

Eight classics, three of those being Late Registration, MBDTF, and Yeezus.

Show me a rapper with a better track record and influence.

Yeezus is a classic? When I think of a classic album I think of like illmatic...Yeezus? lmfao

I dont even think Kanye has an album that you can put in a top 10 all time

And isnt Eminem still the top selling rap artist in album sales?

Reading this thread made me lowkey angry, swear im done with gaf "hiphop heads"

Opinions and all. You're probably 25 or younger. Just saying

I bet KB and Redman could rap circles around anyone that you'd replace them with. Legends

Much like Rass kass is Em favorite emcee and he never ever gets mention save for old darts like me.

on amount of songs that are mainly rap? top 20

on songs with no ghostwriters? top 40

on fuckery top 10

on exposure top 3

He's probably one of the best producers of all time. I'm not sure he's one of the best rappers. I think he's in the conversation, but he would likely get passed on for better rappers pretty quickly.

That said, I think it's clear that him and Jay-Z were great because Jay is one of the best rappers and Ye is one of the best producers.

I'm always nervous about bringing up Eminem because he's white. I believe he's one of the greats, but I'm white, so I always figure I don't have the best opinion because of my race and Eminem was one of the first rappers I listened to. I think he's the best, but who am I to really say?

Can I also say I'm upset Papoose never got big.

Is Andre 300 really that good? I never thought he would be but I never listened to his old stuff which I guess is what makes him that good?

Yeah. Listen to every single album of OutKasts and start from Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik which is a heavy underrated album. From that go to

- ATLiens
- Aquemini
- Stankonia
- Speakerboxxx / The Love Below
- Idlewild

He's great and he's really influenced a lot of today's artists. He's also very versatile. He can be simple, deep, romantic, hard, creative, fun, sad, rap, sing, the guy can do it all. Just imagine hearing his verse on Gangsta Shit and then hear him on Toilet Tisha.

Yea pap is the man, he was actually suppose to be next but he came at the time things were changing so it never happened.

3K is one of the best ever in the rap game. Straight up. What he and Big Boi did is fucking great and what they did seperately is good as hell too

2Pac>>>>>>>>>>> Kanye West

Andre would be in my top five rappers of all time, no doubt. Quite possibly number one.

He's also the greatest producer/rapper of all time. Not sure why his and Big Boi's production work (mainly as part of Earthtone with Mr DJ, though "Ghetto Musick" proves Andre is great producer on his own too) gets overlooked so much.

Dre. Over Nas.

Wat?

I'm not into making lists so I won't be doing that.

I will say that as much as I enjoy Kanye's albums and body of work he's not the best rapper of all time. Not even close.

However, Ye's influence in the way rap music sounds is wide and far reaching. I honestly might like him better as a producer/beat maker than a rapper. He's got some good bars but nothing special. Ye's specialty is arranging music and putting together samples that turn into amazing beats. I kinda wish he would step back from performing and go back to producing.

Nope, but he is the best rapper/producer, ignoring The Life of Pablo.

There isn't a single rap artist, living or dead, with a more diverse discography of albums.
From the evolution of College Dropout to Late Registration, to the holy grail of MBDTF and the complete 180 he pulled with Yeezus.

People who try so hard to deny Kanye's status are WOAT.
Kanye has multiple undeniable classics.

You can like his work without claiming he's the goat when he doesn't write his own shit.

For the record i love ye, best of all time he isn't even in the conversation as a mc.

Andre is fucking gold. One of the most distinctive and original voices in rap music in recent memory. Dude is a legit poet and a great artist.

I never called him the GOAT, in this thread I said that he isn't even in the competition.
