Overwatch: Reflections comic out [Hanzo cake obsession and Roadhog's circumcision]

30 years old? How is she still alive?

And I'm definitely a fan of the comic. Uncle Rein is best Reinhardt. But I now wish for a rugged drifter Hanzo skin and I have less than 5 mins played on him.

Do we know who is suppose to be that guy with S76 in the photo he's looking at? Reaper? Does that match up with S76 being grey-haired in the photo?

Same. Overwatch is the only game that makes me want to try to get skins for characters I don't play or suck at.

I am garbage at McCree... but I fucking needed to get his American Skin.

Blizzard said:
As in real life, having variety in our characters and their identities and backgrounds helps create a richer and deeper overall fictional universe. From the beginning, we’ve wanted the universe of Overwatch to feel welcoming and inclusive, and to reflect the diversity of our players around the world. As with any aspect of our characters’ backgrounds, their sexuality is just one part of what makes our heroes who they are. From the very beginning of our work on Tracer’s story, it just felt right to make this an aspect of her character.
Nice

Reading the Kotaku one and I can't roll my eyes further at the "safe pick/two pretty girls" remark. Safe? They picked one of the main stars in the game. One of the first people we met when the game was first announced. The character that adorns THE COVER OF THE GAME and you calling that a safe pick? Tracer is the face of Overwatch and it's huge that they not only decided to have her represent the LGBTQ community but had that planned for her during her inception. Safe my ass.

And not sure who they were looking for when every character in the game is attractive in one way or another. smh

Some people simply can't be satisfied. The concept in general is crap, but that's pretty much exactly the kind of mindset people are talking about when they talk about "SJWs." This sort of attitude does more harm than good.

Has the EdgeLord God Reaper had any backstory?
He was part of Overwatch's hit squad and felt underappreciated. Got jealous of Morrison's fame and decided to betray everyone.

He also probably died once and got revived by Mercy. The process was imperfect and now he is in a constant state of regen and decay.

That's about it. Knowing Blizzard there probably is going to be a twist or two on why he did that to Overwatch.

Yeah, not very many non pretty girls in the overwatch roster. Calling it "safe" kinda downplays the importance that blizzard did.

The males are allowed a much greater range of body types. Also functioning spines.

I really don't like the Kotaku article. I don't feel it recognises what Blizzard has done. The fact that they even mention how happy it has made so many fans yet seem to think it's underwhelming and not a "good job" is very strange to me.

Kinda disappointing.
Yeah the Kotaku one is unfortunate. It's a lesbian on the cover of the one of the biggest games of the generation. That's fantastic. The reveal was their best shot at not doing it gimmicky and just natural. It is cute and nice and a good step. The "I'm less likely to buy a game actually if there's only one lesbian" was worth a groan.

But Genji and Mercy!!!!!!! Genji and Mercy!!! Gency!!! Emergenji!!! YES! YES!!!! YES!!!!! I don't care about your reasoning and differing opinions about that what the letter says I'll take it!!! Score to Genji/Mercy!!!! Take that all you haters!!!

There is no "score". Mercy and Genji have had voice lines that show they have at least some sort of platonic relationship since the game existed. We've known that forever. And Genji called Mercy "Doctor Ziegler" which is the most unromantic name in the world to call your bae if you're in a relationship with someone.

The Gency people today are seriously making me think the Mercy76 folks aren't actually that bad in comparison.

Nah theres a subset of those losers in each fanbase but Ive never seen it dominate the discussion as thoroughly as it has with Overwatch.

Most of the people on here who talk about the shipping stuff don't take it as seriously as other people want to make it seem. The art thread ends up getting into the shipping stuff because that's just a natural part of fan art. Let people have their fun, and direct the scorn at the people out there who actually go overboard to the point of harassing artists and creators when ships don't go their way.

You make it sound like the gameplay isn't enough to carry it.

The only reason I'm playing Overwatch today is because of the fan art. I originally just lumped it in with Battleborn and Paragon and whatever else and wasn't really paying attention to what it actually was. I started to because I found the growing community of fan art and fell in love with the characters. I'm far from the only person that's happened to, so I think the art is an important part of the game itself in the end.

Doctor roleplay is a common sexual fantasy. I wouldn't rule it out as a flirt name.

Roadhog is attractive?

While Blizzard should be praised for portraying a gay character in a prominent role, making it a hot lesbian is definitely the safest way to do that. You see it in gaming, and in general media, all the time. Someone made a good thread about this idea a few months back. By making a female character also interested in attractive women, you are placing those desires in line with your predominantly straight male player base.

Life is Strange's main character was the face of the cover. It's not a unique situation.

Cause you know, respecting your coworkers on the job flies out the window when you're in a relationship right? Plus the Japanese culture is a lot different than you give it credit for. Something that many people seem to forget and just assume differently.

Also, if Mercy gets hurt Genji will call out "Angela!" during gameplay. Plus Mercy will say "Genji! I was too late!" for reasons I'm not sure of yet.

But nope it doesn't count. "Let's take to the skies!" is far superior I guess. Let's just agree to disagree since this agitates you (and I guess me too haha!) so much.

What? No, I mean the stoic easily embarrassed type who can't be honest :v
Kuudere or Tsundere?

Anime relationship.

Kuudere or Tsundere?

A bit of both. Genji is the type that would try his hardest to be professional and respectful with minimal public displays of affection and insisting it's nothing. But is actually a big softy and a sucker for the traditional.

That's why he's writing a freaking letter with a freaking quill instead of calling or email.

Fuck Ginny.
You want to? You can have her! No one else does!
These statements are so on point.
Thats not what I meant, let me explain.

Example: In the fanart thread shipping talk is rampant to the point it dominates discussion and most of the fans are happy to talk about it. The few who arent comfortable with the discussion will slow down and then eventually stop being a part of that community if they dont like where the discussion is going.

If someone who is curious about that popular Overwatch fanart thread decides to click on it and is greeted by shipping talk are they going to say "HOT DAMN SHIPPING TALK JUST WHAT I WANTED" or "err this doesnt feel right, maybe Overwatch isnt for me and I dont really belong here"

Everyone inside is happy to talk shipping meanwhile an outsider will look in and wonder what the hell is going on.
As the person who created that Overwatch fanart thread, I'm not sure what you expected.

Shipping is frankly the reason we have that thread still. It's not the reason I started the thread, but it's the reason it's still going. Because people enjoy paring characters and creating head-canon stories about them. Not necessarily even romantic "ships," but people really enjoy creating fun stories in their heads about the characters. Without the shipping, we'd have a hell of a lot less art, a hell of a lot less interest in the game and a hell of a lot less conversation.

Haha makes sense! You got me there.

Hmm...makes sense. I can totally see Genji acting like this. Even more so considering that he was a play boy in his youth so if he and Mercy really do have a thing for each other (I said IF guys! Don't attack me!) I can imagine Genji being sort of lost or even afraid of how to act towards her since she is someone that he truly loves and not just for pleasure only.

Otome relationships.

Like in those reverse harem shows. The playboy character would be lost and "off his game" when he encounters someone who is genuine and isn't affected by his charms. Extra doubly so if he's trying to change to a better person.

+1 to this argument, among others that have been said.

Genji seems like a character that might be very formal or awkward regarding love.

Just finished an otome game, so this makes too much sense to me.

Do we know who the other person is in the photo that Soldier is holding?

cdic.png

Interesting to note is that Soldier's hair is white in the photo so it's post-Overwatch fall. That is, unless it's a color error on the artist part. It does sort of look like the guy in the Ana video but the hair is swaying a different way. Maybe it's the 'new' Lao?

Oh good, this stupid "all the girls look unnaturally young" bs popped up again.

Barring certain circumstances like health complications or major weight fluctuations, most people don't age drastically from their early 20s to their mid 30s. Healthy men and women in their 30s generally aren't walking around with deep-set crows feet and wrinkles. In some cases people do age a little quicker, and on the other end of that you have people like many of my family who are pushing 60 and still look 40 easily.

Overwatch also has a stylized and very clean art style which glosses over fine details and patterns in textures. You can't see the weave in fabric, or the fine details in wood grain, or any subtleties of skin complexion that would normally be prime indicators of aging. This is why Soldier/Ana/Torb/Rein all have specific, exaggerated facial lines, wrinkles, scars, receding hairlines, etc to indicate their age.

I mean, I'll totally grant that Mei and Tracer have more youthful features than may be expected, thanks to backstory plot fuckery, but how are Sym, Mercy and Pharah supposed to look MORE 30? It's just silly.

It sure as hell ain't common, and you had the ability to determine who's Max's love interest was in that game, we don't have that choice with Tracer.

Sorry but in my opinion I feel like this is noteworthy and something to be celebrated, and for people to just shrug unimpressed and say "they did the minimum" is bullshit. If these people are from an alternate reality where this is common place let me know as I would have been there yesterday. :lol

I'll be damned to withhold a 'good job' from one of the few companies actively pursuing diversity their games.

Tracer is a safe pick. They'd get more credit for her being queer and on the cover if it actually came up when the game released and you saw Tracer promo materials and not 8 months later, long after the relevance of those promo materials, and mentioned only in a web-only comic book.

And the fact that it's a relatively attractive and feminine female character who kisses another relatively attractive and feminine female character means you avoid upsetting an audience that expects the male gaze to be catered to. If you had a similar scene that ended in giving a gift and a kiss between Junkrat and Roadhog, the reaction from retrograde jackasses would have been off the fucking charts because not only is it addressing queerness in the game but also it gives no sexual satisfaction to members of the straight male audience, unlike doing the same with two very attractive and feminine women.

With this step, they have done The Least They Could Do after having been pestered with questions. If this is a first step in the right direction, great. If Blizzard thinks this is the end and they've done it, then we have a problem.
