Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Basically, I mean most of us buy games were have been on the look out for awhile anyway along with the impulse buys, right?

Not me

I only buy games I know I will 100% play for at least 20 hours or more

This sale im getting only 3 games, and one of them is DOOM because its IRL retail price of almost $70 is insane. So im happy to suffer though a 90GB download for that $20 price

This is my first Steam Sale (and my first real foray into PC gaming)! Looking to clean up on some of the FF games (IV, VIII, maybe X?) and hoping to grab Civ V Complete, among other things. Always open to recommendations too, if anyone has any!

You should pick up Civ5 complete and have a damn great time if you like turn based strategy games. You wont need another game until the next sale.
Sure you will buy more lol

I've been so patiently waiting for Fallout 4 GOTY to come out and go on sale, but I'm now wondering if the DLC is even worth waiting for. $20 Fallout 4 is really tempting.

Greenmangaming are doing the Metal Gear Solid V Definitive Experience for £15.57.
I've got both games on PS4 but none of the DLC....

How is the PC version by comparison? Particularly on a GTX 970.
I'm interested in the PC version for messing with mods too.

The DLC is all cosmetic or for the basically defunct multiplayer.

I haven't had a chance to play with my new 1060 but it ran surprising well with my 460 back when it first came out. Mostly at 60 with everything on low at 1680x1050, I have to imagine a 970 would crush it.

I'm trying to keep to a budget but there are bound to be a few deals I can't resist. I like buying really cheap indie games that I know I want to play.

Wouldn't mind another arcade shooter. Any recommendations for someone who likes LUFTRAUSERS, Bit Blaster XL, Pixeljunk Shooter, and Downwell?

Also, after enjoying Axiom Verge and Xeodrifter I'm definitely eyeing Environmental Station Alpha. $4.79 ain't bad.

I'm thinking of:

Satellite Reign - $4.49
Hard West - $7.99
-
Total - $12.49

I was already interested in Satellite Reign but someone in the comments said something to the effect of "Bought for a spiritual successor to Syndicate, got a spiritual successor to Commandos. No complaints"

I fucking love me some Commandos and I'm looking to pick up Shadow Tactics asap because the demo is amazing.

Top 5 games on my wish list:
1. Total War: WARHAMMER - 25% off, but basically almost $65 for the base game and the recent Dark Elves DLC. Was hoping this would go a little deeper. Gotta think about this one, because it might be above my total budget for the seal. Depends on what kind of fundage I get as gifts.

Wood elves not dark elves!

REally nothing special. Only Deus EX can be good but it was not winter sale special. It's in %67 discount since 2 day. So a huge nothing. Valve disappointed me...

Shadows of Mordor GOTY is down to $10, yeah I think it's time I pick it up. I've been wanting it for some time now but just never pulled the trigger before.

Also, Wolfenstein New Order for $6.59 is a definite buy.

And I'll probably grab a few more before it's done too.

ALL I WANT IS DOOM
ALL I AM GETTING IS DOOM
TIME TO DOWNLOAD 66 GIGS OF DOOM

Way of the Samurai 3 or 4?

Definitely 4 it's hilarious and incredible, if you've never experience the franchise it's also a perfect starting point. WotS is like Majora's Mask if it was only about filling out the bombers hand book.

For the image thing, right click the picture that you linked to, go to properties, get the actual .gif or .jpg or whatever, and use that. IMG tags require the image source.

Thanks!

I'd say Invisible, Inc. is your #1 priority on that list, followed by Cities.

Both are amazing.

Austin's pitch is why I put Invisible, Inc. on my wishlist :)
Should I buy the DLC? It's only 1.20€ more as a bundle, but some of the Steam reviews are complaining about the changes it makes to the main game.

You should buy Dragon's Dogma and play it today! The game got released on steam almost a year ago and won't be much cheaper during Spring Sale than it is now.

Fine, you have convinced me. I remember playing the beginning of Dragon's Dogma when it first came out on PS3 and not liking it. I've been meaning to give it a second chance for years, so now is probably the time.

In the US and I'm seeing it at -35% right now.

edit - base price is $30 though
You looking for the first or the second game? O_o The first regularly goes to $10 but SC hasn't gone below $19.49.

99% of my play time on it was with a 970, it's over kill for it. I don't think it ever pushed my card that hard.

By impulse I don't mean blind buys though, just games that weren't planned on but an appealing sale of well received games. I got DOOM last month, been a couple days, I really need to get back to it. Download size for it was certainly ridiculous, after a couple updates its current size is 76.7GB on disk. Only game I have that comes near that is GTA V at 68.5GB.

Yea, never played any of the games but always wanted to. Will start with 4.

I would only buy it if you really, really like the puzzles and are happy to do nothing else. It is a game that offers nothing else and will only be enjoyed by a select group of people.

More importantly, is there a chance Skyrim can go cheaper?

Well considering it's a puzzle game...duh?

"Only buy Doom if you like first person shooters and are happy to do nothing but shoot things"

Featured Sales are just sales they're promoting on the front page, they're not higher discounts or anything. Unless they're doing special discounts on Steam Awards winners, there's no reason to believe that anything will get a steeper discount later. 75% off is normally around where most stuff tops out anyway.

Thanks! Looks like I'm snagging Assault Squad 2 then. Those sweet sweet Star Wars mods mmmm

Yea, never played any of the games but always wanted to. Will start with 4.

Awesome I hope you enjoy it! The point of the game is replayability fyi. You're supposed to try and find all the different endings and dialogue options and events that happen during the 3 days of play time. Everything carries over every time you finish the game so you're basically doing like 20 NG+ runs.

A lot of times even when you don't think you have a choice in an event you absolutely do.

Oh you hero! I was just complaining about how expensive they all were and that I still wanted them. Will refund and get it that way. Cheers

Glad you saw it in time - enjoy the games :D. Icewind Dale is also on sale at Bundlestars for 1c over its historical lowest price if you can/want that too. Great game, and underrated IMO. The combat is really good. Apparently the colde WINTERSALE10 gives 10% off too. Not sure if it'll work but it's worth a shot.

my scientific approach to current day sales uses 3 deciding factors:

- money (or lackthere of)
- bundle inclusion probability, especially humble monthly
- and "will I play this before its cheaper next sale"

My 3 purchases so far were actually all with card money (I sold about 4€ worth of cards earlier before the sale started)

- Inexistance, cool looking metroidvania 90% off, even if its bundled it was .59 cents

- Magatama Earrings, chibi jrpg, looks kinda cool, also 90% off, seems too niche to be bundled (I never heard about it) and even if it is, agin, it was .69cents

- Adventure Time The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom 50% off, looks like 2d zelda, licensed games usually arent bundled, was only 1,49€

things in my cart atm:

- Paladins Founder Pack, 50% off 9.99€. Wont be bundled, I liked what I played, includes every future hero.

- Final Fantasy VI 50% off, like I said the other day Ive been wanting to play it bad, and it should run fine on my laptop so I can play at work.

- Final Fantasy III 50% off, same reasons as 6.

- Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII 50% off, I want to complete the trilogy, I wont play this on the laptop but an added reason is that FF games apparently never go bellow 50% these days so next sale will probably be the same price. I still havent finished XIII tho so this one is a easy cut for now.

things im looking at:

- Ray Gigant 70% off, good price, high profile vita ports of jrpgs usually arent bundled.

- Stories The Path of Destinies 50% off, discount isnt as deep as I would like, but it looks great and its niche and unknown enough to not be bundled I think. I would have to play it imediatly to be "worth" buying it now tho.

- Lego Marvel Avengers 75% off, wont go cheaper than that on any sale I guess, and those Lego games re fun. But I still have a bunch of LEgo games to play so meh.

- Mighty No. 9 66% off, good price, it doesnt look THAT bad, probably wont get bundled (maybe in a monthly? maybe...)

- Resident Evil Revelations 2, 50% off because it never fucking goes lower than 50% off, but I really want it bastards.

- Naruto 4 and Ninja Rev, 75% off, mostly for completion sake. 12,50€ for 4 is a bit out of completion sake buy tho.

- Saint Seiya 75% because I was a Saint Seiya fanboy when I was a kid and I want to see the pretty special moves. Again, 12.50% might be too much for shallow reasons.

- Tales of Zestiria 75%, but I just bought Symphonia and havent played it so...

- Any NepNep game I dont own that is 75% off, but it would only be for completion sake because I havent played the others >_>

things that have good discounts, but im SURE will be bundled, especially in humble monthly, aka, bundles have ruined sales:

(also feel free to use the following list as cheap games that are most certainly worth it at their prices if you are not fickle like me)

- Invisible Inc 70%
- Abzu 70%
- Chronicles of Teddy 63%
- Convoy 70%
- Darkmaus 50%
- Dex 75% (I said the same thing the last 2 sales and it still hasnt been bundled but im sticking with my convictions damn it lol)
- Evoland 2 75%
- Gabriel Knight Sins of the Fathers 75%
- Holy Potatoes a Weapon Shop 67%
- Jotun 67%
- LA Cops 75%
- Lakeview Cbin Collection 80% actually you know what, its 1.99€ fuck it im buying it
- Legend of Kay Anniversary 75%
- Neon Struct 75%
- Offworld Trading Company 66%
- Planet of the Eyes 75%
- Pony Island 67% (actually im most likely buying this one)
- Road Not Taken 75%
- Rollers of the Realm 80% (will probably buy this one tho)
- Seraph 66%
- Shadwen 75%
- Shardlight 70%
- Skyhill 50%
- Slain 50%
- So Long Earth 75%
- Stealth Inc 2 80% (in fact this HAS been bundled before)
- Steamworld Heist 50%
- The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 75% (the first was bundled 467 times)
- The Deadly Tower of Monsters 66%
- The Swindle 75%
- Toybox Turbo 75%
- Traverser 80%
- Tri: Of Friendship and Madness 80%
- Underail 50% (sorry Gaf)

have I mentioned tht bundles ruined sales?

things that didnt low enough because they never go deep enough stop being stingy fucks you fuckers

- all the anime fighters

Fine, you have convinced me. I remember playing the beginning of Dragon's Dogma when it first came out on PS3 and not liking it. I've been meaning to give it a second chance for years, so now is probably the time.

I played it for around 3 hours on PS3 when It came to PS Plus but stopped because I couldn't handle the bad performance. Game definitely gets better once you get a couple of quest into the story and now with 60FPS it's even better.

I bought Dragon's Dogma during the Autumn Sale, and 105 gameplay hours later I urge everyone who loves action RPGs to buy it. It's on sale for $12 right now.

Okay I got ..

The Witcher 3 : Game of the year
The Age of Decadence
The Void
Watch Dogs 2
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Ori : Definitive Edition
Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition

$102.23

I am happy :)

NICE!

I am going to jump on that Bundlestars bundle. That's probably the lowest price for all 3 of these that I have seen. That's probably like... 80+ hours of amazing RPG right there, AND THEN you get Seige of Dragonspear too! (I have no idea if it's good or not, and have only heard middling things about the writing in it).

Awesome! Don't forget to try the code (WINTERSALE10) and see if you can score a bit of extra savings. And yeah I think it is the lowest price ever for all 3. Great value.

Is it still worth it if you don't' have Dark Arisen? I have the original game on PS3 - wasn't able to get a copy of Dark Arisen though.

So I wanna try a Tales game. I need a decent story and characters to get me through an RPG. Symphonia worth it?

I'd never played a Tales game before but I tried Symphonia during a free weekend it had a month or two ago and really strongly disliked the combat. So if you go for it, carefully monitor your playtime and if you don't like it stay under 2 hours so you can get a refund. No harm in trying though with their great refund policy.

Prison Architect for 3.50 € if you own the rest of the bundle.

So I know I had wanted to play Prison Architect at one point, and I clicked on the link thinking there is no reason I shouldn't jump on it at that price. Turns out I already own it.

Guess that's when I officially know I have a problem...lol

So another question for the crowd here...

Elliot Quest or Environmental Station Alpha? Both are about $5 at the moment. They're both kinda similar, so looking to only pick up one this round.
I really enjoyed Elliot Quest. Just found the first area/dungeon a bit lacking. When it opened up with more abilities and better puzzles I really started to like it. It has that "figure out stuff on your own" NES style which I found really refreshing compared to modern day hand holding. I didn't like ESA that much. Even Xeodrifter was more fun and that game was lacking a bit, although I had fun playing it.

Is it still worth it if you don't' have Dark Arisen? I have the original game on PS3 - wasn't able to get a copy of Dark Arisen though.

Absolutely you should buy it on PC, especially if you have a half-way decent setup. The framerate and level of detail on the PS3 version is atrocious, and the PC version is really well optimized. It's better put together than most of the recent "remasters" we've seen of PS3 era games.

So far I bought:
  • Final Fantasy V
  • Xanadu Next
  • ABZU
  • Pony Island
  • Cities: Skyline
  • Ys Origin

It's probably enough to keep me until summer. Debating Killer is Dead, Lovely Planet Arcade and Teslagrad since they're aroung 5€ together.

Wanted to buy CrossCode initially even if it is in Early Access since it looks fantastic. But then I read they plan to release Q2 or Q3 2017 so I hold of until summer. In the meantime I might try the demo.

Any opinions?

I'd say it is worth it for what it is. I bought it and played it for a few hours when it came out (paid full price) and then my PC died. I wasn't able to recover the save and I didn't have the heart to replay everything I'd done up until that point. I should go back to it because I liked it well enough.

I think this is going to be purchase #1 for me this sale:
IFZmxXW.png

And then if I get Steam credit for Christmas, I'll buy whatever the credit amount is worth of Final Fantasy.
